A new computer technology was the medium for these tools, and since that time the impact of computers has been huge, bringing about a radical change in the way we do business – the digital economy. The discretion left to individual education authorities has led to unsatisfactory outcomes." The report also documents the dramatic reduction of design and construction expertise.

Australian Industry Overview
The Way Forward
Australian uptake of digital modeling technologies in the built environment has been limited; however such technologies have the potential to significantly improve productivity in a sustainable design.

The optimal number of participants in each workshop was agreed to be 30 (including four facilitators/correspondents) to ensure that each participant's contribution could be expressed and captured within the allotted time frame of each workshop. Correspondents assisted the organizing committee with participant management, workshop materials, venue and information capture based on a predetermined and agreed upon committee format. Workshops were facilitated by at least two members of the organizing committee to ensure consistency with each venue.
This mix of representatives provided a wide variety of experiences and opinions regarding the key initiatives, opportunities and actions needed to identify the BIM roadmap. This strategy was identified as having the best chance of achieving the end goal: a BIM roadmap that delivers a unanimous plan and direction, resulting in standardized, coordinated, and most importantly industry-approved BIM practices, including a BIM library, tools, education and business processes.

Proprietary standards for the use of best-of-breed software will have a place in the planning, design and construction of buildings, but it will be essential for these to be complemented by open-standard, vendor-neutral standards to ensure proper data access for an owner over lifetime of a building. Development of consistent Australian BIM standards will facilitate a market for BIM services and accommodate improved briefing systems, delivering significant savings in construction. The standards should be developed sufficiently to facilitate a well-functioning market for BIM services and allow the market to establish additional function-specific standards for higher-order simulation and analysis applications.
There is a healthy international market for BIM design tools and a growing process to ensure the interoperability of such tools, but the open standard suite needs support to ensure maximum post-construction benefits for building owners. Consistent basic training for existing industry participants will lead to a shared industry-wide understanding of the benefits of BIM processes, lowering perceptions of risk and facilitating orderly change management. Some government involvement may be necessary to ensure that the training market meets the requirements for a well-functioning BIM market in Australia.
Engage tertiary institutions to the extent necessary for tertiary education to properly support a well-functioning market for BIM services in the Australian economy.
Implementation Strategy Work Program 4 – Product Data
Facilitating easily integrated access to diverse land, geospatial and building information will greatly benefit the Australian economy, significantly reducing current. A priority would be to develop a strategic plan in collaboration with all affected Australian sectors for the eventual transition to model-based approval systems to support the Australian.

Conclusions
It is well placed to co-ordinate the implementation of the step change required for the Australian built environment sector comprising a complex. Productivity and Capability Fund (CPCF) of S$250m, where BIM is a key component to the improvement of the country's construction sector services. In 2000, Singapore established the Construction and Real Estate Network (CORENET) program, a strategic initiative by the Ministry of National Development that aimed to drive transformation in the construction industry through the use of information technology.
The program is fully funded by the government and is designed to move the construction industry from 2D design to building information models that are data-rich and used throughout the entire life cycle of the building from design to construction and demolition. Senate Properties is a state-owned enterprise under the direction of the Finnish Ministry of Finance and is responsible for the management of the Finnish state's real estate assets and for the leasing of premises. The Danish Enterprise and Construction Authority established the program to increase and improve knowledge sharing between the parties of the construction sector, from the initial idea to the.
Statsbygg acts on behalf of the Norwegian government and is responsible for the construction, management and development of state property.

This appendix summarizes the main ideas and inputs that emerged from the stakeholder consultation workshops held in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra in March and April 2012. 260 key industry and government participants across all major jurisdictions in Australia. The record is grouped into the six initiatives identified by buildingSMART at the 2010 MESH conferences.
As such, the record in this appendix captures all that feedback and will continue to evolve as a record of the views of key industry stakeholders across Australia. A key element of the stakeholder consultation workshops was the identification (by participants) of activities to be undertaken in pursuit of each initiative. These activities were identified as required work programs in the first two distributed drafts, but have now been removed from this appendix and are being developed separately in the National BIM Implementation Plan.
It is important to note that there were no dissenting voices in the feedback, but rather a series of clarifying statements and additional ideas.

Need for automatic update synchronization of product data and error control to maintain the integrity of the data. It will be difficult to get buy-in from manufacturers until a clearer representation of the data requirements/capabilities is given.
Currently, designs often do not facilitate accurate quotes from manufacturers, resulting in them pricing themselves out of the market due to risk. There is widespread recognition of the need for changes in business processes to facilitate the integration of briefing, design, construction, manufacturing and maintenance of the supply chain throughout the life of a built facility, achieved through the effective exchange of BIM-based data and information . Customer-driven early involvement in projects enables business needs to be integrated into better management of the supply chain from inception to completion/handover and operation of the facility.
The challenge: to achieve recognition at all levels of the industry of the time/costs associated with implementing BIM in a project.
