Section 1

Instructions

• If you need more space for a response, use the additional pages at the back of this book.

– On the additional pages, write the question number you are responding to.

– Cancel any incorrect response by ruling a single diagonal line through your work.

– Write the page number of your alternative/additional response, i.e. See page … – If you do not do this, your original response will be marked.

• This section has three questions and is worth 20 marks.

QUESTION 1 (7 marks)

Refer to Stimulus 1 in the stimulus book.

a) Calculate the concentration of ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) in Cleaning solution A.

Show your working. [3 marks]

Concentration = mol L–1 (to three decimal places)

b) Determine which cleaning solution was used to collect the data for the titration curve.

Explain your reasoning. [2 marks]

c) Use the data to identify if there is a relationship between ammonium hydroxide

concentration and pH. Consider the measurement uncertainty in your response. [2 marks]

QUESTION 2 (8 marks)

Refer to Stimulus 2 in the stimulus book.

a) Determine which class of compound is least soluble in water. Justify your response. [2 marks]

b) Infer how chain length affects the boiling point and solubility of organic compounds.

Justify your response using evidence from the table. [4 marks]

Section 2

Instructions

• Respond in paragraphs consisting of full sentences.

• This section has one question and is worth 40 marks.

QUESTION 4 (40 marks)

Refer to Stimulus 4 in the stimulus book.

To investigate the claim that biodiesel produced from ethanol is ‘greener’ than biodiesel produced from methanol, a research question was developed.

Research question: How is the atom efficiency of biodiesel production affected by the type of alcohol (methanol or ethanol) used in the transesterification reaction?

a) Identify how the research question links to the claim. [3 marks]

b) Analyse the data in Figures 1–5 to discuss how reaction time, alcohol-to-oil molar ratio, catalyst concentration and oil volume affect atom efficiency.

Use your findings to determine optimal reaction conditions for the methanol and

ethanol reactions. [24 marks]

d) Use the findings from Questions 4b) and 4c) to evaluate the claim that biodiesel produced from ethanol is ‘greener’ than biodiesel produced from methanol.

Discuss the quality of evidence and suggest one way the investigation could be

extended to improve the evidence. [6 marks]
