Welcome to Dance Grad 08, our final showcase program for this year. Our students have had a busy semester working with our four guest choreographers and look forward to sharing their work with you.
Our first years have experienced the wisdom and skill gained from Harold Collin’s long and prestigious career as choreographer and former Artistic Director of Queensland Ballet. His work, Fallen Angels ll harks back to an earlier work created for QUT and develops it for this new group of eager, young students.
Justin Rutzou is a welcome addition to our teaching team this year and has challenged our second years with their first contemporary work for performance at QUT. Relishing this experience, they have made good use of Justin’s impressive track record as a performer, teacher and rehearsal director.
Equally impressive are the skills that Sarah-Jayne Howard brings to her new work for our graduating students. Sarah-Jayne’s work calls on both acting and dance skills and these student’s endless thirst for new learning experiences has pushed their capabilities into new territory.
We have further tested these students with a second work for their Grad season by our own Natalie Weir. I call her ‘our own’ as she is both a graduate of our institution, an Australian choreographer who has gained an international and national reputation from consistently producing quality work and is now the new Artistic Director of Expressions Dance Company. We heartily congratulate Natalie on her new position – it is well-deserved and we look forward to a productive relationship with both Natalie and the company.
But back to tonight. I hope you enjoy these dance works and thank you for encouraging our student’s development through your ongoing support.

Last year I created a duet for QUT Dance 07 graduation season, entre deux. This new work is an extension of that duet; re exploring the sentiment behind the original work.
Why do some past relationships linger in our memory, why are others passionate yet destructive, why do we hurt those we love the most?
In our search for love in life, there are times we feel isolated, disconnected and misunderstood. Why is being alone sometimes just not an option?
My thanks to the 3rd year graduating students of QUT for their input and enthusiasm

It would be good to report that this work was deep, meaningful, life changing and plunders the depths of human emotions – but it is none of that. What else could it be about, I hear you ask? What about that old perennial favourite relationship? No, its not that either. It’s just about dancers, their space and the joy of movement. We all just hope that our reason for being with you is enough.
