CMLAC 2019/2020 Annual Report

From the CMLAC President

To realise how far we have come as a club over the past season we need to look back to where the journey began. We truly do have a lot to celebrate.

Planning for the season ahead begins soon after the current one finishes. Our small but dedicated committee held a strategy meeting in April 2019 where we listed our strengths and agreed what is truly important to our members as well as identified areas to improve. We outline our goals for the season and then set about putting them into action. We should all be enormously grateful to our dedicated committee made up of a small number of volunteers.

We must also acknowledge and thank our Age Group Managers who volunteer each weekend.

Being an Age Group Manager is one of the most important roles in Little Athletics. They are responsible for caring for and nurturing our young athletes and most importantly making it fun! For many age groups, it takes a small team to make the Saturdays run seamlessly. Your hard work does not go unnoticed.

At our yearly strategy meeting we outlined a number of achieveable improvements and set our goals for the year. As a club we have many achievements to celebrate this season.

1. Sponsorship

As mentioned we were incredibly successful in securing tremendous support by way of corporate sponsorship. Without their contributions the season would not have been nearly as enjoyable. Their sponsorship has allowed us to improve our equipment, employ our coaches and provide awards to our children at the end of each meet. Many of our sponsors have fond memories of Little Athletics themselves so it goes to show, how long the experiences, friendships and enjoyment of our sport stays with us. Our sincerest thanks to:

Gold Sponsor:

East Malvern Community Bank - Bendigo Silver Sponsors:

TheirCare

EBM – Rent Cover Pizza Religion Grill’d

Bronze Sponsorship:

Coles

Thank you also to Carlo Calabrese for securing a partnership with Metro through their employee care program.

We look forward to continuing our partnerships with these generous and community minded businesses.

2. Membership Growth

Camberwell Malvern has been one of the only clubs in Victoria and certainly the only club in the Eastern Metropolitan Region which has recorded a membership growth this season. We are proud to be able to accommodate the needs of all our members by being family friendly as well creating a pathway for athletes who want to take their participation in the sport further. Having access to two ovals as well as our investment in new equipment ensures that our little athletes participate in six events each Saturday in less than two hours. We are the only Little Athletics club that can offer this breadth of events in this time allocation. In our busy life, this offering is what sets the club apart.

It a combination of sponsorship as well as membership that ensures our club remain in a healthy financial position.

3. Equipment Purchases

This season we made some significant purchases of equipment including new lightweight, fully collapsible hurdles, more throwing equipment and measures. The purchase of two sets of scissor kick mats ensured that little athletes in u8-u10 learnt correct high jumping technique and also enabled our Saturday program to enjoy very little wait time at this long event.

4. Coaching

Under the guidance of Level 4 accredited coach, Tony Marsh, we were able to offer three training sessions per week. Most notably was creating a session dedicated to u6-u8 athletes who were able to extend their skill acquisition beyond our well developed On Track program.

During the relay season, we were lucky enough to be given access to the Nunawading Athletics Track as well as the St Kevins Athletics Track so that teams were able to finesse changeovers.

Aspiring Olympian and Australian 4x100m team member, Nana Owusu-Afriye, attended all training sessions and shared incredible tips and techniques to our team members.

For the individual track and field session, we opened up sessions with the United Track and Field squad at the Box Hill Athletics Track which gave our little athletes further opportunities to train harder.

The development of this coaching program has, in my eyes, been the greatest achievement of our committee. I am so proud that we created these amazing opportunities for our kids.

5. Success at Inter Club Meets

In my 11 years at Camberwell Malvern, this has been the most successful in terms of participation and medals at the various interclub meets this year.

We entered 48 teams into the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Relay Carnival with 26 teams qualifying through to the State Relay Championships in December 2019.

In early 2020, a large contingent of little athletes descended on Lakeside to compete in the State Combined Events Championships. A very special mention must go to u9 athlete Steph Engelbrecht who won our club’s first State Combined Event Champion. Steph embraces all elements of little athletics, is a proud clubman, an amazing sportsman fiercely competitive and has a strong desire to achieve more. Most importantly, Steph is never without a smile. We are extremely proud of Steph’s achievements this year and look forward to watching him develop in years to come.

With the season cut short and the State Track and Field Championships cancelled, our 29 State qualifiers were obviously very disappointed and have had to come to terms with goals yet to be achieved. Your hard work to get to the pinnacle of our sport should be celebrated. Look back on your progress over the season and be proud.

For many of our older athletes, this may have been your last season with Camberwell Malvern. We wish you the best of luck with your sport and know that little athletics will have provided you with a really strong foundation. For those who wish to continue with our beloved sport, Camberwell Malvern strongly supports a pathway, for both girls and boys, to the St Kevins Amateur Athletics Club. This senior club is closely aligned with the core values of Camberwell Malvern being very welcoming, encouraging and open to all abilities.

It is with open arms that I give genuine thanks to all our members. We are a great community club with tremendous diversity. Our members all have a strong desire to improve and embrace all aspects of little athletics being running, jumping, throwing and soon to be walking!
