UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE.
The University of Melbourne is a Corporation established by the Act 16 Vic., No. 34. The Royal Assent was given to tliis Act by His Excellency C. J. La Trobe, Esq., on the 22nd January, 1853.
The University is to consist of a Council and a Senate.
At present it consists of a Council only. The Council was appointed by a proclamation dated 11th April, 1853, and the first meeting was held on the 3rd May, 1853.
The selection of Professors for tho several Chairs was entrusted to a committee of gentlemen in England, and the Professors arrived in the Colony in December. 1854, and January, 1855.
The foundation-stone of the building was laid on the 3rd July, 1854, by His Excellency Sir Charles Hotham. The University was formally opened by the Governor, and the first matriculation of students took place in tho Exhibition Building, on the 13th April, 1855.
The building of the University was opened by the Go- vernor, oh the 3rd October, 1855.
By Her Majesty's Letters Patent issued on the 14th of March, 1859, the Degrees conferred by the University of Melbourne are recognised in Her Majesty's dominions aa fully as if they had been granted by any University of tho United Kingdom.
