T H E S H A K E S P E A R E S C H O L A K S H I P . The Shakespeare Scholarship was founded in the University of Melbourne as one part of a scheme for founding in Victoria a Memorial in commemoration of the three-hundredth birthday of Shakespeare.
On the 23rd April 1860 a public meeting was held at the Town Hall, Melbourne ; subscriptions were received and funds were raised by a theatrical performance and by lectures ; and on the 23rd April 1864—the Shakespeare Tercentenary—the Scholarship was founded. The subscription lists and other documents connected with the foundation are preserved at the office of the Registrar of the University.
The following, is a list of the gentlemen to whom the Scholarship has been awarded :—

T H E V I C E - C H A N C E L L O R ' S P E I Z E . The Vice-Chancellor offers a Prize of Twenty Guineas for the best English Essay, open to all Matriculated Students of the University who at the time of sending in their Essays are not of standing for the Degree of Master of Arts.
The Essays are to be sent in to the Registrar on or before the first day of March.
Every Essay is to be distinguished by a motto, and to be accompanied by a sealed envelope containing the name of the Author, and bearing upon its exterior the same motto.
No Essay is to be in the handwriting of the Author.
Subject of Essay for 1878 :—"Feudalism, its develop- ment and decay in England and in France."
