UNIVERSITY HOUSE

UNIVERSITY HOUSE

1. University House, which is situated within t h e University grounds, is a club for t h e members of the University staff. I t was instituted in 1953 for t h e purpose of creating within t h e University a wider a n d more varied society than any single department could offer, a n d in t h e hope that it would promote friendship a n d t h e fruitful exchange of ideas between people whose work was varied yet h a d a common objective. I t was intended to provide members with meals in pleasant surroundings, to serve as a place where colleagues from other universities might b e entertained, a n d to assist members in their private entertaining. T h e House possesses a hquor hcence.

2. T h e present members of t h e committee a r e :

3 . University House is financed b y members' subscriptions, donations, with some assistance from t h e Council of t h e University. T h e building is t h e property of t h e University b u t its contents belong t o t h e members.

4. Membership of t h e House is in accordance with t h e constitution approved by t h e members a t a general meeting a n d can only be changed b y a general meeting of members.

( a ) Foundation Members

Foundation members shall b e those persons who were admitted as foundation members before 31st July, 1953.

( b ) Non-foundation Members

( a ) the Chancellor, t h e Deputy Chancellor, the Vice-Chancellor, members of t h e Council of t h e University, t h e Warden of Convocation a n d former Chan- cellors and Vice-Chancellors of the University, President a n d Chairman of t h e Graduate Union;

( b ) full-time members of t h e academic staff of t h e University with t h e status of tutor or higher status;

( c ) full-time members of t h e Administrative/General/Library Staff of t h e Uni- versity in any of t h e following categories—

( i ) Senior Secretary or higher,

(ii) Library Assistant ( G r a d u a t e ) or higher, (iii) Administrative Assistant or higher, (iv) Senior Technical Officer or higher,

( v ) other full-time members of the Administrative/General/Library staff whose status is equivalent to any of the above classifications and who are deemed eligible by the Committee;

( d ) full-time research workers in any of t h e following categories—

( i ) Graduate Research Assistant, Junior Research Fellow or higher, (ii) Graduates pursuing an approved course for the degree of Ph.D., (iii) other full-time research workers deemed ehgible by t h e Committee

including members of staff of research institutions located within t h e grounds of t h e University or in close proximity to t h e University who have a status within, their institution equivalent to that of Research Fellow or higher;

( e ) part-time members of t h e teaching, research or administrative staff of t h e University deemed ehgible b y t h e committee. Eligibility will, in general, b e governed by a teaching load of approximately 40 hours p e r year, a n d status equivalent to t h e categories hsted in ( b ) , ( c ) a n d ( d ) above;

( f ) the heads of Affiliated Colleges and University Halls of Residence and senior full-time salaried graduate staff of such colleges and halls; and persons who work for the greater part of their time within the University as senior officers of kindred organizations who are deemed eligible by the Committee;

N o t e : Senior members of Colleges and Halls who are not employed full- time by these institutions should qualify for membership under ( b ) , ( c ) ,

( d ) or ( e ) above.

( g ) visiting professors, lecturers, research workers and members of the staffs of other universities who are not in any of the above categories who are not admitted as temporary honorary members under Rule 11 and who are deemed eligible by the Committee;

( h ) former members of staff of this University or of other universities who are currently associated with this University and its work and who are deemed eligible by the Committee;

( i ) a person who is currently associated with the University and whom the Committee wishes to recognize for extended and distinguished service to University House.

A person admitted to membership under any rules previously in force who retains his qualification for membership under those rules as at 30th June, 1954, or as at 30th June, 1973, shall not cease to be eligible to continue his membership merely because he is not within any of the abovementioned categories.

( c ) Associate Members

T h e following persons may be elected to associate membership by the committee for such period as the committee determines—

( a ) any person ehgible for membership (clauses 3 or 4 ) ;

( b ) the wife or husband (not being in statu pupillari) of a member (clauses 3 or 4 ) ;

( c ) any person who is a member of the staff of the University not described in clause 4 deemed eligible by the Committee;

( d ) the widow or widower of a deceased member (Clauses 3, 4, 12, 13 and 1 5 ) . ( d ) Affiliated Members

( a ) T h e committee may elect as an Affiliated member, any person who is a member of the staff of another Victorian University and who is also a member of an organization which is deemed by the Committee to be the nearest equivalent to University House available to him in his own Uni- versity, provided that he is not otherwise ehgible to be a member of University House under Clauses 4 or 15,

( b ) Affiliated members shall pay an annual subscription of one-third the full membership fee.

Associate and affiliated members shall not be qualified—

( a ) to b e officers or members of the commitee; or ( b ) to vote as members of the club; or

( c ) to propose or second candidates for membership or office.

5. T h e house is open for the full academic year and is normally closed for 4 weeks at Christmas.
