Chapter X.-Of the Faculties

THE . OFFICERS OF THE SENATE

The director will assume the chairmanship once twenty members are present. If the office of Director is vacant, or if the Director is absent, or wishes to take part in a debate, the Senate shall elect a President, who, while President, shall have all the powers of the Director; but if the Director arrives after the Chair has been held, or no longer takes part in a debate, the Chair will leave the Chair. A Clerk of the Senate shall be elected annually and shall perform the duties assigned by the Director.

The Clerk shall receive all notices of motion or questions, and also all nominations of candidates for the office of Custodian, Clerk or Member of the Board. The Clerk shall, under the direction of the Custodian, draw up a Notice-paper of the business of each meeting and issue it together with the circular convening the meeting. The Clerk shall also cause a copy of the report and recommendations, if any, of the Standing Committee to accompany the circular convening the meeting.

Under the direction of the administrator, the secretary records the minutes of the voting and work of the senate in the book. Whenever the office of clerk becomes vacant or when the clerk is unable to act, the administrator may appoint a suitable person to act until the clerk is appointed. When the post of administrator becomes vacant in an emergency or when the administrator is unable to act for any reason, the clerk performs the tasks of the administrator until the next meeting of the senate.

MEETINGS OF THE SENATE

If after the expiry of a quarter of an hour from the time fixed for the meeting, twenty members are not present, the meeting is cancelled. If it appears from the announcement, or from the report of a division by the tellers, that twenty members are not present, the warden shall declare the meeting closed or adjourned to such time as he determines, and such division shall not be recorded in the minutes.

CONDUCT OF BUSINESS

Whenever the warden rises during a debate, any member who speaks or offers to speak shall be seated and the warden shall be heard without interruption. Any motion or amendment not submitted shall not be discussed further and shall not be entered into the minutes. Where amendments have been proposed but not made, the question will be asked as originally proposed.

Once a debate on a question has concluded, the director will submit the question to the Senate. The Director's vote will take place before other votes, without him being required to leave the Chair. In case of equality of votes, the director will cast a casting vote and all reasons given by him will be recorded in the minutes.

The clerk enters the lists of divisions into the minutes. Council members are elected at the first meeting after the manager learns of the vacancy. Each candidacy is signed by two members of the senate; and each proposed candidate signs consent to the appointment on the nomination form.

If more than four members have been in office for the same period, the order of their retirement will be decided by vote.

Any member of the Senate who is required to be sent Notice of meetings of the Senate by Standing Order 17 may, after the date fixed for the receipt of nominations, apply to the Clerk of the Senate for a postal ballot. The Clerk of the Senate shall issue a postal ballot to each member of the Senate who applies for it in accordance with Standing Order 98 and shall keep a record on the Senate list of persons to whom postal ballots have been issued. has been released. SUSPENSION OF STANDING ORDERS

The Conservatory shall provide courses of instruction and study for the degree of Bachelor of Music and for the Diploma of Associate in Music of the University of Adelaide in such branches of music as the Council may from time to time approve. The Conservatory will also provide for the teaching and study of various branches of music as individual subject studies. The range of studies so offered shall be approved by the Council from time to time, and the studies shall be classified as follows: principal subjects, secondary subjects, classes.

Students can major without progressing to the diploma; and, subject to the approval of the director, they may take secondary subjects or attend classes without taking a major. The teaching staff of the Conservatory shall consist of a director and such other professors, lecturers and teachers as the council may from time to time appoint. The conservatory year extends from February to December and includes thirty-six teaching weeks.

It will be divided into three terms, with the dates for the beginning and end of the terms and holidays to be determined annually by the Council. A prospective student must convince the director of his suitability to participate in the proposed study, and upon admission he must pay the entrance fee and sign the student list of the Elder Conservatory. Unless special circumstances are approved by the director, a student of a major subject is admitted to the Conservatory for a period of at least one year; and a student entering after the first semester of any year has begun commits to completing three full and consecutive terms of study.

The student or, if under twenty-one years of age, his parent or guardian undertakes to pay tuition for one year. Every major student must (a) pay an annual general fee prescribed annually by the Council; and (b) regularly attend series of lectures and concerts at the Conservatoire as prescribed by the Director; provided that (i) a student concurrently enrolled in a Bachelor of Music or Associate in Music degree is exempt.
