At the time of going to press, mem ers of parliament were a out to de ate the second reading of the Harmful Digital Communications Bill that will make it an offence to send messages or post material to cause harm. This offence will e punisha le y up to two years in ail or a 2,000 fine. Schools, parents and young people themsel es ha e long grappled with the harmful effects of cy er ullying, and this potential legislation may e welcomed. owe er, as arla Sanders from Sticks‘n’Stones a New ealand anti cy er ullying pro ect points out, it may not e appropriate to criminalise people as young as for actions that they may not fully understand the conse uences of Stuff, 20 5 . There is no dou t, howe er, that the issue of cy er ullying must e addressed. As the authors of an article in this edition of airaranga point out, cy er ullying is linked to a range of serious ad erse outcomes, and growing num ers of our young people are e periencing this form of a use.
