Electronic Assignment Submission in Stream
Assignment drop box tutorial
There are 5 types of Assignment module that you can add to a Stream course from the ‘Add an activity’ menu:
1. Advanced Uploading of Files
• You can specify the number of files students can upload.
• Student submissions can be automatically sent to Turnitin for checking text similarity. The Turnitin score will be displayed as a percentage beside the submitted file.
• Students can specify when to send files for marking and add notes.
• Markers can upload a commented file for students.
2. Online Text
• This allows students to input text online. You can grade online and add inline comments if you wish.
3. Upload a Single File
• Allows students to upload only 1 file, but you cannot upload a commented file.
• You can also use Turnitin.
• You have fewer options when setting the module up and it is less flexible.
4. Offline Activity
• You can use this for any occasion you want to add an assessment that is not going to be submitted electronically – so this module can be used for semester tests etc.
5. Team Assignment
• Allows students to create their own teams and submit work for marking as a team. The teacher can grade the work as a team and/or individually. Created for use with Lightwork.
Common Features
• Each instance of an Assignment module will put a column in the Gradebook, give you a place to deal with uploaded files and assign marks, put a notification in the course calendar and also give advance warning several days ahead in the Upcoming Events block.
• When you set up the activity you can specify the mark schedule, e.g. a mark out of any integer less than 100, a scale or no grade.
• You can determine when the activity is available from, the due date, whether you will allow late submissions and whether it is a grouped or grouping activity.
• In the Assignment Description you can link to any files the student may require, such as the marking schedule or assignment information.
• If your course has extramural enrolments, you will have submitted a Course Diary to NSATS. This enables you to map your Assignment activity to the Diary entries and means that NSATS will print the student files with a cover sheet and forward them to the paper coordinator. More information here.
• To support the management and marking of the assignments setup in Moodle you can use Lightwork. This application guides the marking with marking rubrics and marking sheets. It allows you to setup frequently used comments. You can also coordinate your marking team with Lightwork. See

NSATS Assignment Processing & Submission data tracking for distance courses
For Distance students, Massey’s policy is to track centrally (in MAS) the date a student submits an assignment and the date the assignment is returned to the student. This is managed through the Assignments Office of Student Management (NSATS).
To track the date and time an assignment is submitted to Massey through Stream, the Assignment Drop Box(es) need to be linked to MAS. The Assignments Office perform this function from data supplied in the Course Diary form (log in required).
Assignments Office staff will access the Stream course as ‘non‐editing teachers’ in order to download the assignments for printing.

Managing your marking in Stream with Lightwork
Lightwork is a new application developed by a software development team located at Massey University led by Eva Heinrich ([email protected] ).
Lightwork works in conjunction with Stream. It requires that assignments are setup in Stream for electronic assignment submission. Students submit their assignment files to Stream, the lecturer and the marking team mark in Lightwork, the students pick up their feedback and marks from Stream.
The core advantages of using Lightwork for the lecturer:
• More efficient handling of student assignment submissions and the marking process;
• Potential for better feedback through marking rubrics and frequently used comments;
• Better coordination of the marking team.
