MASTER OF DENTAL SCIENCE

A course of advanced study and research related to the prevention and correction of dental disease, particularly in children. A course of advanced study and research related to the prevention of dental disease and the delivery of dental care.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

Advanced study of the structure of matter in relation to the properties of materials involved in dentistry. Biological and mechanical factors involved in the selection, handling and behavior of materials used in clinical practice.

Advanced study and research into the nature and treatment of disorders of the dental pulp and periapical tissues and the relationship between these and other dental and systemic conditions.

ADMISSION TO DENTAL SCIENCE COURSES

GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF SELECTION FOR ENTRY TO POSTGRADUATE COURSES

Reservation of Places in Quotas (Deferment)

Special principles may provide that for applicants who have been selected for a course, places in the following year's quota will be reserved, provided that a faculty may determine the number of places to be reserved in each year-. 34;4.3 When an applicant has been granted a deferred place in accordance with paragraph 4.1, the applicant must notify the faculty concerned by the date specified by the faculty. a) whether or not the reserved place will be occupied in the following year;.

NOTIFICATION

A selection committee may, after considering such evidence and conducting such interviews as it deems fit, and subject to any special selection principles, grant a deferred seat for a second period of one year.

Alternatively, an examining board may retain a second copy of any failed test or assignment to be marked from another point at the end of the year if the student's overall result is a fail. DENTAL SCHOOL RULES FOR STUDENTS

Students must comply with all safety precautions as outlined by the Safety Officers of the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne and The University of Melbourne, which are posted on department notice boards. Students are only permitted to undertake clinical work on registered patients at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne. On library nights, all areas of the building except the access road to the library and the library are off-limits to students.

230-101 DENTAL STUDIES 1

A consideration of the role of the dentist and the dental profession towards the individual patient and society. Three written assignments, one during the year and two at the end of the year, up to a maximum of 6 hours.

Each candidate's progress will be assessed throughout the course and will be taken into account in the assessment of the final examination. Candidates whose progress in practical classes has been satisfactory may be exempted from all or part of the final practical examination. All candidates may be required to undergo additional tests, including viva voce and/or practical examination.

Describe how microbiology can be used and misused in the diagnosis and management of dental diseases and the complications that may follow. A 1-hour written exam consisting of short-answer or multiple-choice questions related to lectures and practical work and a 1-hour practical exam will be held in the middle of the year. At the end of the year there will be a 3-hour written paper and a 1-hour practical exam.

230-301 DENTAL STUDIES 3

To inculcate the concept of asepsis in dental practice by examining the epidemiology of dental disease and the possible routes of infection in dental practice. Lecture programme: Diagnosis and treatment of the exposed vital pulp and the necrotic pulp with and without periapical involvement. Consistency of the buccal mucosa and oral surface anatomy in relation to appliance area and circumference.

The course of lectures and tutorials is supplemented with clinical notes which outline various topics and highlight areas of difficulty or of particular importance.

230-401 DENTAL STUDIES 4

A continuation of the diagnosis and treatment planning in Third Section and including special investigations useful for establishing diagnoses, differential diagnosis of oral disorders and formulating treatment plans for complex cases. A continuation of the longitudinal growth studies of selected normal patients and patients showing abnormalities of growth and development, including behavior. A continuation of the clinical practice started in the third year with the total care of selected patients in a general clinical practice setting.

FIFTH YEAR

The terminal dentition, assessment and treatment by immediate denture therapy; surgical, laboratory and clinical aspects; bone remodeling and its control. A scheduled period of 3 hours per week up to a total of 78 hours for carrying out library work related to the preparation of assignments for Dental Studies 4. Candidates may be required to engage in further clinical, laboratory and/or or subject to viva voce examinations.

Consideration of the diagnostic and management aspects of patients with multiple or complex general and dental problems; specialist referral. The extension of earlier years' growth studies to growth, development, attitudinal and behavioral changes throughout the period of maturity and into aging. Clinical aspects of the dental care of patients with disorders involving mastication, salivary glands, taste, deglutition and oral proprioception.

233-503 ORAL MEDICINE AND ORAL SURGERY

The research project report will be examined and candidates may be asked to submit to an oral examination in relation to their work as set out in the written report. Endotracheal anesthesia, the place of non-endotracheal techniques, including conscious sedation, in dentistry and the limitations of the techniques. Candidates may be required to submit to additional clinical, laboratory, written and/or viva voce examinations.

236-503 CONSERVATIVE DENTISTRY

Normally, students are scheduled into clinics for clinical tutorials at Melbourne's Royal Dental Hospital, Royal Melbourne Hospital, Royal Children's Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Clinic. Applied physiology of respiration and circulation in relation to patients undergoing surgery under general anaesthesia. Assessments of each student's written and practical work are also made throughout the year and are factored into the assessment of the final result.

241-504 RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY

Gnathology: Chewing forces and efficiency, function of the periodontal ligament, mandibular movements during chewing and speaking, the jaw joint in relation to dysfunction, diagnosis and treatment planning, myographic analysis, bruxism. Maxillofacial prostheses: Principles for assessment and treatment of gross defects after surgery, radiation and trauma. Assessment of the individual student's written and practical work is also carried out during the year and is included in the assessment of the final result.

Precise appliance work, indications and contraindications, patient preparation, requirements for abutments and supporting tissue, overdentures, sectional dentures, implant abutments.

REGULATIONS

An applicant for probationary candidacy may be admitted to probationary candidacy if—. a) the applicant is accepted by the Academic Board with the recommendation of the head of the relevant department and the dean of the relevant faculty; and. b) not being a university graduate, the applicant becomes a graduate student of the University. For the purposes of Regulation 4.4.1, the thesis shall be written in English, unless the Council, on the recommendation of the Academic Board, determines otherwise. The Academic Board can, with the recommendation of the head of the designated department—. a) require a candidate as part of the course to participate in lectures and practical work as determined by the Academic Board;
