TeeBeeCee Gazette FROM THE CHAIRMAN SEPTEMBER 2012

As most of our bowling members are aware we are indeed fortunate in having a computerised

“Bowls Program” that greatly assists our Selectors in running a day’s bowls. The program enables the Selectors to assign players to teams and teams to rinks. It prints the score cards and additionally generates a report that assists in the collection of green fees and a report that assists the kitchen staff to prepare the right quantity of sandwiches and assign the correct quantities to the various tables (rinks). This program was developed by David Blackwell with some significant input from Geoff Martz and has been in use now for 3-4 years.

David and I have been talking recently about upgrading this program (as a purely non-

commercial, hobbyist endeavour) to cater for things like Championships and their associated random draws, ladders etc. It was therefore of considerable interest that I learnt that Bowls Australia has just called for tenders for what they are defining as a “Whole of Sport” IT system.

Their website currently reads ...

“A tender process has commenced by Bowls Australia and the State and Territories Associations for a Whole of Sport IT system.

An opportunity currently exists for Bowls Australia and all State and Territories to progress to one system for the sport. The process for achieving this has involved significant consultation with the State and Territories since September 2011 where a working party developed the framework for the system and requirements from the sport’s perspective.

There are currently 1,961 clubs, 490,090 participants and 469,748 members nationwide in the sport of bowls.

The timely delivery of a system which allows more effective administratioof the sport across borders nationwide, by providing all the features required of an IT system at all levels of the sport is sought”

This is a most interesting initiative on the part of Bowls Australia and provided they get it right should be of great benefit to the sport, clubs and players alike. I expect many of us will now watch this story unfold and I’m sure we will all look forward to reaping the benefits when the system becomes available.

HAMO’S TeeBeeCee REPORT

FINANCIAL

• Balance Sheet and P&L for the five months of our 2012/13 financial year shows a loss of $12,591 which is $24,685 less than for the same period last year (i.e. loss $37,276): Note however the net proceeds of $34,667 received in May for the sale of gaming licences.

• YTD Profit before depreciation is $24,896.

• Total current assets of $277,430 (including cash assets $254,234) also shows our sound position.

BAR, BBQ & GAMING

• Gaming Machine Net Clearances are down by $6,246 (8%) with turnover decreasing by $173,375 over the corresponding period last year.

• Bar receipts are down by $13,279 (13%) continuing a disturbing trend (not unique to TBC)

BOWLS & MEMBERSHIP (TB&MC)

• Position as @ 15/9/12 = Voting Membership 268, Social Membership 367, Total = 635.

• Welcome to new bowling members Ron Brunton, Bill & Sue Peattie, Janine Scott and Chuck Woodall plus our eight new social members.

• The Lawn Bowler’s Manual is an impressive new publication compiled and edited by committee members of the Zone 9 Association of Coaches. It is available from the Bar and @ only $5 should be a “must have” by all bowlers interested in the game &/or improving their game.

MEN’S BOWLING CLUB (TMBC)

• TBC was the winning side in the 51st Annual Dee Why Invitational Fours last month: TBC was represented by Bob Southam, Herbie Brenner, Geoff Hamilton and Ken Wallis. Three wins on the Saturday got us into the ‘A’ Grade where we were again successful winning the three games (TBC were the only side with 6 wins). A big achievement for Turramurra

• A further impressive result was achieved with TBC having four wins from four games in the 2012 Ku-ring-gai Shield event which was well organised by Warrawee BC. Ken Wallis won his singles against St Ives (31/23), Pairs - Peter Low & Geoff Hamilton against Roseville (21/14), Triples - Peter Heal, Terry Gillett & Bob Hawtree (24/12) against West Pymble, Fours – Luka Simunovic, George Lee, Bryan Popplewell & Herbie Brenner (16/15) against Gordon. Unfortunately our score of 4 wins + 28 was inferior to Lindfield’s 4 + 52 so they will host the event next year. Warrawee finished 3rd with 2 wins + 8 and St Ives 4th with 2 wins minus 5 shots.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT WOMEN’S CLUB

Another month has come and gone. A very pleasant day for Friends Day with many visitors from as far away as Dural and North Sydney a day filled with great bowls and lots of laughter.

Congratulations to Jan Martin, June Hing and Annette Fuller on winning the club triples .

We lost the Rose Bowl to St Ives by 2 shots only 2 little shots. Never mind, next year we challenge for it again

Annette Fuller has been re elected Vice President for Mid North Shore and Jeanette Staniland has been elected to the district Social Committee. It is so good to have ladies involved at district level and of benefit to our club. Thank you to both ladies for giving up more time to assist the district and Turramurra.

It is lovely to see Gwen Graham back on the green and the support shown to her by all club members after her loss of Dick. Congratulations are also due to Gwen as she has received a Gold Award for 25 years membership and service to the club. Wonderful achievement indeed Gwen. Lovely to see Audrey Dunn again, welcome back. Sandy White President

MIXED BOWLS REPORT

If you missed watching the Open Pairs semi-finals then you missed a treat.

The Hawtrees v. Ced Lewis/Bill Pike was 21-21 on the 21st end. The extra end saw the Hawtrees holding game but Bill knocked the shot bowl out and Bob just couldn’t draw past a short bowl.

The other semi saw B. Popplewell/W.Bridge holding game by one shot on the last end against Dugald/

Sue Hamilton, but with her last bowl, Sue trailed the jack to win by one shot. The Final is scheduled for Sunday 28th October card call 12.45p.m.

The Mixed Pairs semi-finals will be interesting. The Fuller’s versus the Wallis’s will be played early;

on Wednesday 3rd October, with the other semi between Luca/Glennis and Kate/Francis due on or before the 14th October. WP.

MAHJONG AND CARD DAY

There is no Mahjong Day this Monday 1st October, it being a Public Holiday. The next Majong will be on Monday 15th October combined with Card Day. Next Majhong only Day is Monday 5th November – the day before Melbourne Cup Day. It was so lovely to see so many ladies enjoying Card Day last month, do come back again and have some more fun. The cost is only $10, this includes lunch and a lucky door raffle ticket.

Phone Jeanette Staniland Ph; 9489 5616 for all your enquiries.

NOTE FROM THE TRADING TABLE

The response from last month’s message was enormous. Thank you ladies. My request for DVD’s was heard, and there were some and then….WOOOOSH! They were gone.

Bowling Uniform clothes are also selling. Any shirts or vests or jackets, They go for $5. I am not sure about old dinner sets. We have a couple of tea sets, and it is a chore having to cart them backwards and forwards from the back room, and in the end we (rather Dorothy) has to deliver them to St Vinnies.

If you think there is a particularly good set to sell then by all means, but not odd plates and of all-sorts.

Not meaning to be picky you understand, just practical. I am for ever wishing you continued happy spring cleaning. - Thankful and with regards - Eva

INNOVATING LAWN BOWLS

“Innovation doesn't always create improvement but it sometimes helps”.

During and following coverage of sport on TV and radio lively debates follow and that's when for better or worse innovations are created.

Most readers can easily relate to post match debates, sometimes passionate but always seeking answers so necessary for the well-being of the sport they play and lawn bowls is no exception.

Having a bowling green at the Landings retirement village and living there, has made it possible to me to fully develop, test and submit various lawn bowls concepts for our great game to be featured in my monthly innovation columns.

*Kindly note the draft format of the score card for “PuttBowl” featured last month is added below.

One such innovation, “Super bowl” at the Landings, attracted over 1500 players and visitors to our village in 2005 and 2006 being part of the sales marketing plan to attract future residents, so last month’s column illustrated yet another innovated game to attract your visitors and friends to our wonderful bowling clubs.

*Kindly note the draft format of the score card for “PuttBowl” featured last month is added below.

As there have been a number of innovated games and training exercises that I have registered, designed and published in my innovation columns over the past 30 years, some bowlers have asked me to repeat some of the successful ones that have been further modified to suit particular applications along the way.

That series will commence in November this year, however before I do that you may be intrigued by some of these innovations that I have submitted since 1973.

• 1973 “Match Bowls” submitted to *Australian bowls Council (no action).

• 1975 “Shot Jack” TV coverage ABC and Channel 7. (Plagiarised)

• 1986 “World Series Bowls” Powerplay contract canned by ABC* above.

• 1986 “Super Bowl” developed; and launched during 2005 and 2006.

• 1991 to 2012 various bowls training and coaching formats will be featured in my innovation columns commencing with the “drawing and driving” competitions and related training programs starting in November.

Score cards will be formatted, printed and displayed in my column when finalised.

Supplementary Notes:

• Players participating in the trials supported the idea of having PuttBowl© played by bowlers and PuttBall© played by non bowlers and young children having difficulty gripping and delivering normal sized lawn bowls.

• Also noted was that holes specified and positioned near the gutters of a full-size bowling greens may be extended by up to 2 m from these gutters (sand traps) for non-playing visitors and young children).

• All bowls and jacks must only be delivered at drawing pace and not driven.

• Rather than chalking the 1m diameter circles on the green, cut out six 1m diameter numbered fabric disks to be placed on the green to locate the six holes.

• Rather than having young children trying to deliver and touch the jack or bowl in the middle of the circle allow them to simply bowl into the circle to score.

• One of the main features of Putt Ball and Putt Bowl is to introduce young players and beginners to try lawn bowls not possible using full-size bowls.

Support your club inviting visitors.

GUNSHOT TO THE HEAD

Linda Burnett, 23, a resident of San Diego, was visiting her in-laws and while there went to a nearby supermarket to pick up some groceries. Later, her husband noticed her sitting in her car in the driveway with the windows rolled up and with her eyes closed, with both hands behind the back of her head.

He became concerned and walked over to the car. He noticed that Linda’s eyes were now open and she looked very strange.

He asked her if she was okay, and Linda replied that she had been shot in the back of the head and had been holding her brains in for over an hour. The husband called the paramedics, who broke into the car because the doors were locked and Linda refused to remove her hands from her head. When they finally got in, they found that Linda had a wad of bread dough on the back of her head..

A Pillsbury biscuit canister had exploded from the heat, making a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot, and the wad of dough hit her in the back of her head. When she reached back to find out what it was, she felt the dough and thought it was her brains. She initially passed out, but quickly recovered.

Linda is a blonde, a Democrat, and an Obama supporter, but that could all be a coincidence. The defective biscuit canister was analyzed and the expiration date was from 2008, so it was deter- mined to be Bush’s fault.

Hi Eva,

As a bit of a side comment, I worked at White Wings as a Product Manager for 4 years. The American com- pany, Pillsbury, owned White Wings and we had access and knowledge of their frozen/refrigerated range and they had a ‘doughboy’ dressed in a baker’s outfit complete with cap as a promotional tool/device.

I sent this story to a friend who was transferred to Pillsbury in the US, and he commented that he can still remember the product… they were affectionately known as ‘bombs’!!

So there!

Regards, David

PS: Again gain as an aside, we used to say ‘you had to be a good mixer’ to work at White Wings (tcompany was the market leader in cake mixes, and of course, ‘the dough’s good!’)

The Big Family Bible

A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages. “MAMA, look what I found,” the boy called out. “What have you got there, dear?” With astonishment in the young boy’s voice, he answered; “I think it’s Adam’s underwear!”

CEO

A CEO parks his brand new Porsche in front of the office to show it off to his colleagues.

As he’s getting out of the car, a truck comes speeding along too close to the kerb and takes off the door before zooming off. More than a little distraught, the CEO grabs his mobile and calls the police.

Five minutes later, the police arrive. Before the policeman has a chance to ask any questions, the man starts screaming hysterically:

‘My Porsche, my beautiful silver Porsche is ruined. No matter how long it’s at the panel beaters it’ll simply never be the same again!’

After the man finally finishes his rant, the policeman shakes his head in disgust.

‘I can’t believe how materialistic you bloody CEOs are,’ he says. ‘You lot are so focused on your possessions that you don’t notice anything else in your life.’

‘How can you say such a thing at a time like this?’ sobs the Porsche owner.

The policeman replies, ‘Didn’t you realize that your right arm was torn off when the truck hit you.’

The CEO looks down in horror and screams. ‘Bloody Hell! Where’s my Rolex?’

Pay Attention... Good Advice

Pay attention here, this is serious…. I believe that you need to know that…. A hunch is angel talk, and probably should not be ignored. Listen to your hunches, pay attention to your intuition, do not dismiss your random thoughts, inspirations or ideas. Heaven talks in snippets, not in speeches. Angels whisper fast.

They have to when flying around…. Honour your Hints from Heaven. They could be giving you the best advice you ever had. CWG.

TA END IS NEAR

Sean is the pastor of a Church of England parish on the Northern Ireland/ Southern Ireland border and Patrick is the priest in the Roman Catholic Church across the road.

One day they are seen together, erecting a sign into the ground, which says:

TA END IS NEAR!

TURN YERSELF AROUNT NOW AFOR IT IS TOO LATE!

As a car speeds past them, the driver leans out his window and yells

“Leave people alone, you Oirish religious nutters! We don’t need your lectures.”

From the next curve they hear screeching tyres and a big splash.

Shaking his head, Rev. Patrick says “Dat’s da terd one dis mornin’.”

“Yaa,” Pastor Sean agrees, then asks, “Do ya tink maybe da sign should just say, ‘Bridge Out?’
