Speakers felt that although medicine can become a trade with fixed hours and fixed pay for a fixed task, and that some doctors manage their practices in this way, such an attitude must inevitably lead to a lowering of standards and a decrease in the public's respect for the medical profession. Speakers on another subject — "Is the General Practitioner Decadent?" mostly asking questions and discussing the essential place of the GP in the health service. The third and final debate on the future of medical research got a bit pointless as most of the speakers looked ahead to a time when all diseases would be conquered, which was a bit presumptuous.
