QUESTION 6 (35 marks)

The Cultural Revolution (1966 1976) was a movement that saw significant political upheaval in China.

The focus was to reignite the revolutionary spirit of class struggle against traditional elements of society, reimpose Mao Zedong Thought as the dominant ideology and eliminate opponents. Mao Zedong launched this movement in order to restore his political power, which had been reduced by his forced resignation as president of China in 1959. During this period, Mao was married to Jiang Qing, who became a prominent public figure during the Cultural Revolution.

Using evidence from Sources 8 15, create an essay in response to historical sources that responds to the question: To what extent was Jiang Qing able to develop her own power in the areas of culture and politics during the Cultural Revolution?
