Six Hat Thinking

Students may want to consider producing a painting of a famous Australian who has made a positive contribution to Australian society and identity. Display the paintings in an ‘Australian Citizenship Gallery of Identities’.

Students have a go at the Australian citizenship practise tests. Ask the students to reflect on the questions in the test and ask them if they would change any of the questions. What would they change and why? Create your own Australian citizenship test and then test your classmates.

North Korea Threats
Reporter: Jack Evans
INTRO: Should you be scared of North Korea? That's the question a lot of Australians are asking themselves after threats of nuclear war were aimed at us by the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un. So, to start today we're going to find out whether you should actually be worried.
This parade looks like a big celebration. But for many countries it was also seen as a big threat. Recently, North Korea has tested weapons the United Nations says it's not allowed to make and threatened some countries with nuclear war, like the US and its allies,
including Japan and even Australia.
KCNA: If Australia persists in following the U.S. [It'll come] within the range of the nuclear strike of the strategic force of the DPRK.
After hearing about these threats it's easy to feel worried about what could happen if North Korea and its leader Kim Jong-un decides to follow through. But It's something experts say Aussie kids shouldn't stress about right now. Here's a few reasons why:
Firstly, North Korea has a long history of threatening others
For around 40 years North Korea has regularly been threatening other countries with war with statements like this.
STIMME KOREAS: If the American imperialists provoke us a bit, we will not hesitate to slap them with a pre-emptive nuclear strike.
Recently, North Korea has even started releasing YouTube videos threatening the US. But it has never actually followed through on any of them.
Secondly, North Korea isn't as powerful as it says it is.
North Korea holds parades like this to show off its military might and it often boasts about how powerful its weapons are.
KIM JONG-UN: Our advanced strike assets, irrefutable in terms of science and technology, just show the strength and dignity of our country.
But most experts say a lot of that just isn't true. It's been known to parade weapons that are actually fakes and claim to have perfected technology that fails or doesn’t even exist yet. Unfortunately, we do know that North Korea does have some nuclear weapons. But at this stage it doesn't have the ability to launch them very far. Meaning that for now Australia is safe. And even if it did try to start a nuclear war with its estimated 10 nuclear weapons, it would have a tough time beating countries like the US or Russia, which both have around 7000.
And lastly, Australia has powerful friends to help protect it.
If North Korea ever did try to attack Australia, the US would be there to support us because of an alliance we have that was formed during WWII. And if you compare the amount each country spends on defence it's not hard to see who'd have the upper hand.
But while knowing this information should help ease your fears about North Korea's threats, it's worth remembering that there are countries closer to North Korea that are really worried right now like South Korea and Japan. In fact, recently, Japan sent this information out to schools to show kids what to do in the event of a nuclear attack. To try to stop that happening leaders from many countries around the world are working together to put pressure on North Korea to back down peacefully. But while those efforts continue.
Australian PM Malcolm Turnbull says this small nation should still be taken very seriously.
MALCOLM TURNBULL: This reckless and dangerous regime puts the peace, the stability, the prosperity of our region at risk.

To other news now. A 13-year old boy's being praised for his bravery and survival skills after spending three days lost in the Tasmanian wilderness with his dad. Stephen and his dad were at the Huon campground where they were supposed to go for a short bushwalk but they strayed onto the wrong track and got lost.
REPORTER: What was it like?
STEPHEN, HIKER: Really tough. Really, really tough!
They managed to make a hut near a river and ate food that other hikers had stashed away along the track. Eventually they were found 15 kays from where they started. And while Stephen's dad had mild hypothermia from the cold they're both in good shape.
Last week thousands of Australians across the country commemorated Anzac Day. For many it was a day to remember the Aussies who've served in wars and conflicts around the world.
KID: I'm marching for my grandpa and his name is called Thomas.
KID: My grandpa was in the war and I had to do this for him because he's my Grandpa.
People marked the day in other ways too. These students travelled 127-kays by horseback from Hermannsburg to Alice Springs as part of 'Ride for Pride'. They wanted to
acknowledge the role Indigenous people have played in the Australian defence forces.
COMMENTATOR: Here are some of the riders coming into camp.
While these guys from Ela Murray International School in Papua New Guinea did a great job cleaning up the entrance to the Kokoda track.
COMMENTATOR: The first unit of soldiers to arrive here were B company 39th Battalion.
The Cassini spacecraft has survived its first dive through Saturn's rings giving us the closest view we've ever had of Saturn's atmosphere.
Cassini even managed to snap a giant hurricane on the planet's surface as it travelled in between Saturn and its rings.
It will attempt another 21 dives before its mission ends in September.
And finally, more than a thousand redheads and supporters have created a sea of orange in Melbourne's Federation Square for the second annual Ginger Pride rally.
CROWD: R-A-N-G-A!
The event's all about celebrating red hair and helping red heads feel confident about their hair colour. And there was certainly plenty of pride on show.

Citizenship Changes

INTRO: Next up. Recently the Australian Government announced changes to the way refugees and migrants become citizens of this country. But what does it mean to become a citizen? And what sort of difference will these changes make? Let's take a look.
What do these, er-herm, very famous and talented Australians have in common? Julia Gillard, Keith Urban, Sophie Monk, the founding members of ACDC and me. Well, we were all born somewhere else and became Australian citizens!
Pretty much everyone who's born here is automatically a member of the Australia club. But if, like me, you became a citizen you'll have a citizenship certificate like this.
REPORTER: It makes you an official Aussie with the same rights and responsibilities as any Australian, including voting, paying taxes and being able to live here permanently.
Every year, more than 100 thousand people from more than 200 nations are given this important piece of paper. They attend a special ceremony and swear an oath to be loyal to Australia, and for most new citizens it's something to be proud of! The federal government says it should be an honour that's only given to people who plan to uphold our country's laws and values. So, last week it announced that it wants to make some changes to the way people go about getting citizenship.
MALCOLM TURNBULL, AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER: There is no more important title in our democracy than Australian citizen and Australian citizenship that institution must reflect Australian values.
Back in 2007, then Prime Minister John Howard said something similar about potential new citizens.
JOHN HOWARD, FORMER AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER: An understanding of um, basic aspects of Australian society, our culture and our values.
So Mr Howard introduced a citizenship test. It's written in English and it's multiple choice, including questions on Australia's history, culture and values like 'What do we remember on Anzac Day?' and 'Who maintains peace and order?' Every 18 to 60-year-old applying for citizenship has to take that test and they have to be permanent residents here for at least a year to be eligible.
Now, the Government's decided it wants to make the process tougher. Under its new plan, people will have to be permanent residents for four years before applying, they'll have to undergo more thorough criminal background checks, questions will be added to the citizenship test to prove people can speak English fluently and potential citizens will be asked if they agree with things like respecting women’s and kids' rights, and the number of times someone can fail the test and try again soon after will be limited.
On top of all that, new citizens will also have to prove they're trying to fit in with society by doing stuff like working, sending their kids to school and joining community clubs. The government reckons these changes will make sure every new Aussie fits in.
But some say there's no reason to change the test or make people wait longer to become citizens. They say a test can't really tell you that much about a person's values anyway, and some reckon a harder language test could exclude people who are still learning English but could still be valued citizens.
The government still has to get the changes through parliament, so we'll have to wait and see whether becoming an Australian becomes a little more complicated!

Battle of the Coral Sea

INTRO: Australia's Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will this week meet US President Donald Trump to mark 75 years since the beginning of Australia's military relationship with America. As we mentioned earlier Australia and the US first teamed up on the 4th of May 1942 to fight Japan in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Here's more about the battle and how it started such a long friendship.
US NEWSREEL, 1942: More than eight thousand miles from the American mainland lies Australia!
It was 1942, in the middle of World War Two, when Australia found itself in need of a great and powerful friend to help fight against a great and powerful enemy.
US NEWSREEL, 1942: Guarded by sturdy ships and ever-watchful planes, American fighting men land safely on Australia's friendly shores.
Just a few months earlier, Japan had bombed American and British forces at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii bringing the United States into the war. It joined a group of countries including the UK, Australia and France that were fighting against another group of countries led by Germany, Italy and Japan.
Japan's plan was to take control over the whole Pacific region. By early 1942, it had
Moresby in Papua New Guinea via the Coral Sea. If Japan managed that, it would strengthen its defences, cut sea ties between Australia and the US and make it easier to attack their military bases, including the ones in Queensland. But what Japan didn't know was that intelligence agencies had cracked its secret codes and uncovered the plan!
So in May 1942, hundreds of American troops joined Australia's and went to sea to
intercept Japan's forces. That's when the Battle of the Coral Sea began. The fighting went on for several days as both sides searched by air for each other’s vessels and attacked them from far away. They did that by launching fighter planes from huge aircraft carriers, and dropped torpedoes or bombs on the enemy. It was the first air-sea battle of its kind in history. On both sides, hundreds of people died and hundreds more were injured, and both suffered big losses of an aircraft carrier each, plus many planes and smaller ships.
QUOTE FROM CREWMAN MERVYN JOHNSTON, HMAS AUSTRALIA: We could hear the comments of various pilots [who] in some cases were running out of fuel or could not land on the 'Lexington' or the 'Yorktown' as they were either damaged or on fire. Many messages were goodbyes to friends or loved ones.
At the time, many people believed the Battle of the Coral Sea saved Australia from invasion. At the least, it was a major turning point in the war in the Pacific; reducing Japan's fighting power for the battles that came after. It was also the start of a military friendship between two allied countries that still exists today.

Kids Suing Trump

INTRO: Next up a nine-year old American kid is part of a group of young people currently suing US President Donald Trump over his environmental policies. We talked to him to find out what he's so worried about.
Levi's a huge fan of the beach. He uses it for meditation and a place to read books. He even has a special spot he likes to sit in!
LEVI: It is really nice to be able to be sitting over here and being able to see the ocean.
But right now, Levi is really worried about his favourite local beach in Florida because of climate change.
LEVI: I just think that climate change is a really big problem right now and my dunes are being eroded like this and that's a cause of climate change so we need to do something to stop that.
How? Well he's taking on one of the world's most powerful people, who's also around 8 times his age!
Levi's part of a group of 21 young people, who along with a heap of environment
organisations and experts, are suing US President Donald Trump over his climate change policies. That's because President Trump doesn't really think it's a thing and during his campaign for the top job, he said he would cancel a global agreement aimed at tackling the issue.
DONALD TRUMP, US PRESIDENT: We are going to cancel the Paris climate agreement and stop, unbelievable, and stop all payments of the United States tax dollars to UN global warming programs.
He's also talked about plans to cut government spending on climate change. But that's upset a lot of people from big name scientists to kids like Levi!
LEVI: I was just totally in shock when I figured out that he doesn't believe that climate change is real. I was just completely shocked. I was like, "What, what, what?"
They argue that things like rising ocean temperatures and rising sea levels are already having a negative effect on beaches and marine life.
LEVI: That's what my nightmares are about, that I won't have dunes.
And if something isn't done now, they say their favourite beaches might not be there when they're older.
That's why Levi and his group are suing the government for failing to protect the planet from climate change. They reckon young people have a right to a safe, healthy and liveable planet when they grow up. And they're hoping the court might order the US government to take action to reduce carbon emissions and fight the problem.
The government's already tried to have the lawsuit thrown out of court, but Levi and his team aren't giving up. The trial is set to be held later this year and while some people think their case probably won't get very far, they're hoping they'll be taken seriously on an issue close to their hearts.

Sydney will make their fourth grand finals appearance this weekend after a 3-nil win over Perth Glory on Saturday. While two of Sydney's goals were controversially awarded by the video referee they out-classed the Glory throughout the match. They'll meet Melbourne Victory in a re-match of the 2015 Grand final after Melbourne knocked Brisbane Roar out of the comp on Sunday with a 1-nil win.
The crows are a win clear at the top of the AFL ladder after thumping Richmond at the Adelaide Oval. The Tigers started well but fell apart after the first quarter scoring 64 points to the Crows 140. That makes Adelaide the only unbeaten side after 6 rounds so far.
Now if you think things can sometimes get muddy on the footy field, take a look at this competition! The Kamfari race in the Northern Territory is all about avoiding bogs, stacks or even just sinking. And at the four-hour mark whoever's managed to stay in front wins the race! This year it was Chris Warwick who's been racing in the Kamfari for 14 years.
CHRIS WARWICK: This is the best, I’ve always wanted to win this race since I was a little kid.
Speaking of unusual races here's another one! It's the Puffing Billy Great Train Race held in Victoria's Dandenong ranges. It pits people against a century-old steam train to see which can complete the hilly 13.5 kay race first!
This year the first place human beat the machine by more than 10 minutes but it looks like the steam train came out the real winner as all funds from the race go to the Puffing Billy Preservation Society.
And after six days of this the Gorilla Man has finished the London Marathon! Tom Harrison known as Mr Gorilla completed the 42-kilometre course on his hands and feet. It might not be the most efficient way to run a race but it was all for a good cause

INTRO: Finally today, a researcher has uncovered evidence that Aussie Rules Football might actually have been influenced by a traditional Indigenous game called Marngrook.
So, we thought we'd take a closer look at Marngrook and let you decide if you think they're related.
It's the game millions love to watch and play. But what is it that makes Aussie Rules
Football so unique? Well Aussie Rules was founded more than 150 years ago, by Thomas
Wentworth Wills, who at the time was one of Australia's best cricketers. He grew up in Australia and spent some time in England, so he'd seen a lot of different sports played.
When he returned home he decided to encourage his cricketing team mates to keep fit in the winter by playing a new game he'd come up with - a game we know today as Aussie Rules.
Over the years, many people have tried to guess where its unique rules came from. Some say it was rugby and other forms of Footy. But others say some of the rules might actually have been based on a traditional sport played by Australia's Indigenous people for
thousands of years called Marngrook. Marngrook is the Gunditjmara word for 'Game Ball'.
And like Aussie Rules it's a contact sport between two teams that fight for possession of a ball with kicks and catches.
There are a few differences though. Instead of being made out of cow hide a Marngrook ball is made out of possum skin and Marngrook teams are much bigger with up to 50 players on each side. You also had to be pretty fit to play because games lasted for around 2 days! At the end of all that only one person was named the winner. The person who either kicks the furthest, jumps the highest or has the ball for the longest.
But here's where Marngrook starts to look more like Aussie Rules. Teams would come from all over and would be represented by different animal totems. Sound familiar?
Marngrook is also a free flowing game without an offside rule just like Aussie Rules. Then there's the mark. If you've ever watched an AFL match you'd know what a mark is. You catch the ball and you get a kick. It's the same in Marngrook. In fact, the word for catch in Djab Warrung is Mumarkke or Mark for short. These similarities have led many people to believe there must be a shared history between Marngrook and Aussie Rules. However, the AFL says there isn't enough evidence to prove it.
But now, transcripts have been found that show Marngrook was played near where Tom Wills grew up, here in Western Victoria - Djab Wurrung country. And there, it was already known that he'd befriended kids from the local Indigenous community and learnt to speak their language. Which means he could have been introduced to Marngrook before creating Aussie Rules.
Some experts still doubt the connection and Tom never actually admitted one. But while the origin of Aussie rules continues to be debated, no one doubts the mark the game has made on this country or the mark Indigenous athletes have made while playing it.
