Examination of material available in the Fisher Library and in the public libraries of New South Wales and Victoria is almost complete.

HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE

This work was reported last year under the more general title "Modern Positivism and Classical Physics" and is still in progress.

This Nusselt number has been determined in terms of the third-order terms of the Reynolds number. Further extensions of the approach discussed in (a) have been made to the case of slow forced convection of a viscous fluid past a heated circular cylinder.

PHILOSOPHY

The appeal of psychotherapists' concrete writing, as opposed to the abstractions of ethics, often leads to skepticism about morality. The writer is interested in finding out what a writer of this type does today about the concept of matter.

The data has been collected and writing of the first draft of the manuscript is underway. The colonial high school curriculum therefore became an amalgam of aristocratic and middle class elements.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

An experiment using physical education students in three matched groups, measuring the strength of the quadriceps extensors by means of a spring balance dynamometer showed no significant differences in the two types of training. There were no significant differences between the right and left legs, either in overall strength or in response to exercise.

The work has continued since 1957 and is complete, although further elaboration of the theoretical treatment will be attempted. A secondary problem of surf beach erosion in Lome was investigated during the year.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Most of the work was based on the LC transformer feedback circuit with both the common base and common emitter configurations. The results achieved are a significant increase in the efficiency of line time bases and a simplification of the entire deflection circuit without loss of performance.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

A strain gauge dynamometer for measuring the cutting forces has been designed and is being built in the Engineering Workshops. A single tool fly cutter will be used and the depths of cut taken will bc of the same order as those used in grinding.

APPLIED MECHANICS (4) Oil Pressure in Journal Bearings

The stress in the work material will be determined from measurements of the curvature of the workpieces as thin layers are successively removed - either by etching or electropolishing. The purpose of this project is to build equipment to investigate the following topics:. ii) free surface condensation and rc evaporation processes in an accumulator tank. iii) rational design of condensation nozzles and other fittings.

It has been determined that under these conditions pitchblende reacts readily on anionic collectors of the carboxylate type, but only in a limited manner on sulfate or sulfonate collectors. Electrokinetic measurements were made by the current potential technique, and subsidence measurements were made in Pyrcx glass cylinders.
