The idea of establishing the Council can be found in the Conference of the Presidents of the State Institute, which was held in Melbourne last year. After it was duly constituted, the first business was the election of the President and the Secretary, and Treasurer. Anderson, the president of the Institute of Architects of New South Wales, was unanimously elected the first president, and Mr.
The members of the council must be appointed by the councils of their respective institutes, the term of office being 12 months. If ever a rate scale was based on a wrong idea, it is the architect's fee scale.
The rooms of the Institute were decorated in honor of the visitors and the program was of a varied character. Tompkins, President of the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects, welcomed visiting representatives from the Australian Institutes. Anderson (President of the Institute of Architects of N.S.W.), responding to the toast, considered the connection of his Institute with the movement for Federation.

GENERAL MEETING
The Council had ordered copies of the documents to be taken so that they could be studied and anything suitable could be extracted from them. It also recommends that the Institute will not necessarily recognize this Diploma in any way as equivalent to passing the R.V.I.A.
Examination should be entitled to submit to the Council of the Institute full details of the results obtained in individual subjects under the diploma examinations, which results would then be fully considered. ". Anketell Henderson (F.), in proposing the adoption of the report, explained the proposal and hoped that it could lead to the university degree in architecture in the near future. Haddon (F.) felt that the subject had to be presented to all members of the Institute, and he objected to cases being dealt with behind closed doors by the Council and then dispatched from the Institute.
The bill on registration.- The chairman announced that he had interviewed the minister for public works regarding the bill on registration.
T RAVEL NOTES IN ITALY
Paul landed on his journey to Rome and the old dock is worth a visit for those looking for the picturesque. The inner courtyard of the castle is filled with military vehicles, arranged in a very random way. The ancient church of Carmine, located just behind Porta Capuana, near the old port of Naples, is one of the most picturesque in the city.
One day we had a discussion about the composition of the characteristic smell of Naples. We felt like we could almost throw the famous biscuit into the bay from the terrace of the Hotel Belle Vue. Many of the palaces in Ravello have marble columns at their entrances removed from the ruins of Paestum.
From Rome delightful day trips were made by electric tram over the Compagna to the towns on the slopes of the Alban Hills. Monuments and ruined aqueducts stand out against the wonderful purple distances of the hills. The castle garden's winding paths lead through hanging forests down to the shimmering levels of the lake, 400 feet below.
It is these connections with the past that make up one of Italy's great charms. Changed the heat and fatigue of the climb, it was nice to rest in the shade. Dandenong ; for in doing so Melbourne had lost one of the best men he had ever known in the profession.
A LONG THE BYE-PATHS
May the Victorian Institute ever purge its scroll of those who are among the enemies of the Empire, and may the heart of the Institute never run its head. There should have been a better turnout of members at the smoke night and drinks reception held at the end of April in honor of the visiting representatives from all of Australia's state institutions. However, it is on the front of the bookcases – which span three sides of the room – that the finest hardwoods are displayed, much of which is of exceptional beauty.
Rearranging the books in these new library shelves will be a somewhat lengthy process, as the classification is intended to be of the highest order. The portraits of the past presidents are "coming in" and will be hung on the wall prepared for them. If we take the library of the R.I.B.A. in London, where so many of our members have received a warm welcome, we can at least provide hanging.
The Australian landscape is indicative of a field which is peculiarly the property of the Australian artist, and in which he should presently excel. Some of the builders in Melbourne have agreed to "break up" their old linen tracks, wash them and send them to the military hospitals for dressings. As the above was of the type, we have received official notification from the Builders' Association that the tracks will be washed and thoroughly cleaned at the association's expense.

T HE TECHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM
The chance of a lifetime is now offered to make the new museum the best of its kind in classification and arrangement, so that it may be of great educational value, as well as of practical use to the man who earns his daily living. bread. As an illustration, take the building blocks, either quarried or used in the state of Victoria. Specimens of the better known stones have recently been prepared to a uniform size, having their faces worked and finished in various ways, pounded, drizzled, rubbed; while others are polished.
If an architect so chooses, he may insert a description in his specifications, to the effect that the stone he specifies must be equal to the specimen in the Museum, and finished to the required face. There exist models and other exhibits belonging to the Department of Public Works, which years ago, owing to lack of space, were lent to the Exhibition Trustees, and are now housed in the Aquarium. One of the most valuable of these exhibits is the model of Parliament House, Melbourne.
These and others of lesser value should certainly be transferred to the new museum, for where they are located they have no educational value whatsoever. Certainly, our architectural offices also have models and works of art that should be sent to the museum. However, now that the museum has opened, we trust that architects and other interested persons will pay it a visit, bearing in mind that although it is under the control of the curators, it has been reconstituted at the request of the R.V.I.A.
If the subject of the Museum were to come up at the Institute meeting some evening, much good would probably come up, and soon the collections might be so enriched that the R.V.I.A.

Eden, M.A., treats of the district south of Monte Rosa and the Simplon, and of the rich, interesting buildings known as sanctuaries, many of which are well illustrated. 34;England's Ecclesiastical Monuments," is an article by James Williams on an inexhaustible subject, in which the best works of successive centuries are described, the most recent period dealing with the Renaissance.

Reade contributes a paper on "Cheap Cabins for Australia." More porches are required for the cabins illustrated in the text if they are to be built in Australia; while "Current Architecture" is shown in Robertson and Mark's work at the Tattersalls Club, Sydney. Taylor writes with a heart full of battle blood, while his wife (Florence M. Taylor) deals especially with the Home Section and "The Soul of Things." Mr. Clements Langford's paper on "Industrial Efficiency", read at the Brisbane Conference of Master Builders, is well worth reading.
34;The Journal of the American Institute of Architects" for February deals extensively with the American Academy in Rome, C. Fitchett deals with Germany in his sharp style; and the articles on the war are written and illustrated in such a way as to give an intelligent view of the conditions , in which the fighting is going on. 34;Everylady's Journal" for May shows that the testimony of senior officers at the front clearly shows that the Australian nurse is above the average in personality as well as in training.
Fortunately, she does well, not alone on the battlefield, but in the less romantic conditions of the Australian bush, as shown in the most interesting articles, in which humor and sadness balance the story, which is well illustrated. Miss Card is the author of a new scheme for the relief of the Belgians, and has designed the d'oyley in half-Irish crochet with the Australian motif shown in the photographic illustration.
