ARCHITECTURE IN BRICKWORK

The Royal Australian College of Surgeons' building in Melbourne (pictured above) exemplifies a somewhat novel use of modern brickwork on public buildings and captures the feel of recent Swedish work. The exterior is in brown brick laid on a Flemish bond, edged with black fittings, which show the decorative possibilities of ordinary bricks with many interesting details.

ARCHITECTURE IN BRICKWOR

FREEMASONS HOSPITAL

Practically all the public schools in the metropolitan neighborhood are of fancy brick, and many of those in the principal provincial towns of the State are of the same material. This led to the station at Geelong being designed as an ornate brick structure and various other stations were designed in the same style. One of the latest public brick buildings in the metropolitan area is the new girls' high school adjacent to Albert Park.

The designer in this treatment was evidently influenced by his taste in the use of colour, and he has adopted the idea with excellent effect. In the case of two of these tunnels (both of which are on the Bendigo line) it has been introduced at the entrances, for in these cases each entrance was made an architectural feature. Bricks have been used in the construction of numerous bridges on both railway lines and ordinary roads.

The use of cement bricks and sand-lime bricks, at any rate in the vicinity of Melbourne, is practically negligible and the use of glass bricks has only recently begun.

LIBRARY NOTES

A good example in which basalt dressings have been introduced is that in Northcote on the Merri Creek. There are also several arched brick bridges on the Bendigo railway line between Chewton and Castlemaine; one, a crooked segmental arch bridge that carries the railway over the Maryborough and Ballarat Road, at the entrance to the town of Castlemaine, is an unusually fine piece of work. Many of our members have undoubtedly crossed this bridge when traveling on the North Line, not knowing that such a curiosity existed among them.

However, it is expected that the latter will be used very widely in the future as it will be found useful in hospitals, for internal partition walls in dwellings and other places where diffuse lighting is desired. The possibility of erecting a building whose walls will be transparent leads us into an absolutely new world, and the novelty of building a house that does not need to be provided with the usual window for its lighting and other similar purposes, is so great that it is not easy to predict to what extent such a development and convenience will be carried. The glass brick is very freely used abroad, and although the same necessity for its adoption may not exist in Australia, in which there is an abundance of sunlight under ordinary circumstances, it is easy to imagine innumerable cases in which it is of extraordinary value. can be utilized.

REVIEW

FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF THE ARCHITECT

THE NEW

SEWERAGE

BY-LAW

In buildings other than hospitals and the like, as a further alternative to the use of a large pipe duct as mentioned above, it is envisaged that the pipes may be concealed in a pit having at least one of its sides constructed of wood. , bricks in lime mortar, terracotta or gypsum blocks, plaster over expanded metal lathe or other approved materials so constructed and fixed that they can be removed independently and without damaging any other part of the structure. Provision is, of course, also required for access openings, but where, in the opinion of the Sewer Engineer, it would be detrimental either to the architectural treatment of the building or otherwise to provide access openings to pipe ducts, access openings may be omitted. at the owner's written request provided that the owner accepts all responsibility for the damage or inconvenience. Airlocks may be removed even when mechanical ventilation is installed in accordance with the provisions of the by-law.

However, more attention has been paid to the ventilation of the closet apartments themselves. In addition, when one of the closet apartments is located in a basement, it is required that additional ventilation is provided through ventilation ducts fitted with an approved type of hood that can have a positive effect. Quiet flushing and a much improved appearance due to the elimination of the ground pipe connection are among their very pronounced benefits, and when one realizes the savings that come from the permitted use of 3 inches.

Space does not permit details of the many other new provisions, but in conclusion matters such as the increase of the permissible length are briefly referred to.

The conditions under which mechanical ventilation will be permitted are also clearly defined, the main requirements being an air exchange rate of 6 times per hour and the provision of a duplicate fan and drive unit, unless the main air shaft is designed to act as an effective natural vent in case of mechanical equipment failure. Following the Board's decision to permit flushing of 2-1 gallons from tanks and flush valves, the required capacity of storage tanks was reduced to 50 gallons per locker used with the additional provision that for lockers to which the number of persons having access shall be limited, the guaranteed storage capacity may be further reduced to the equivalent of two flushes of water for each person served by such a cabinet. Fairly simple charts are also included for designing water supply systems serving flush valves, and an interesting feature is the very significant increase in the number of valves that can be served by copper or brass pipe compared to similar diameter GWI pipe.

It is surprising to note that although the use of siphon pans was permitted by the Council for some time, their adoption by architects was extremely limited. WINDOWS WINDOWS TO OPEN ON VENTILATION SHAFT—EFFECTIVE GLASS AREA = OF FLOOR AREA OF CLOSET APARTMENT. VENTILATION DUCT TO EXTERIOR WALL OF BUILDING — MINIMUM AREA 250.FT - BECOMES ONLY WHERE VENTILATION AXIS EXCEEDS 2 RATIOS IN HEIGHT.

It is assumed that the part shown in the lower right corner of the quadrangle must be placed first.

PREVENTION OF DECAY IN BUILDING FOUNDATIONS

Particular attention must be paid to the ends of the wooden members and provision must be made to ensure air movement around the ends. The Manager of the Metropolitan Electricity Supply Branch, State Electricity Commission of Victoria (Mr. W. H. Connolly). Hindmarsh, Victorian Manager of the Shell Company of Australia Ltd. the owners of the building in respect of which the award was made), congratulated the successful Architects on their acquisition.

Henderson gave thanks for the award of the medal to his company and especially thanked and complimented Mr. Lincolne and Demaine, electrical consultants, for their cooperation in the construction of the building. Hindmarsh with the bronze plaque (designed by Miss M. M. Wilks) to be fixed on the front of the building in a suitable position.

The Haddon Architectural Scholarship.—The President announced that the following stated awards had been made in respect of the Robert and Ada Haddon Architectural Scholarship of the R.V.I.A.

MEMBERS' SECTION

Henderson, that Melbourne City Council should appoint a special committee, consisting of an eminent architect, artist and sculptor, to act as a jury in respect of all designs submitted to the council for new buildings in the city area. In fact, the City Council controlled everything related to building codes, except what gave the city its greatest character: the appearance of buildings. The boxes were designed to be built into cavity walls, with a view to preserving the aesthetic value of buildings.

The second prize awarded in connection with the Design and Planning Competition held in connection with the Scholarship-Certificate and Special Prize worth f2/2/- donated by the President (Mr. Klingender), Mr. Design and Installation of Electrical Equipment in Buildings Modern.—An illustrated address bearing the above title was delivered by Mr. Trevor Hedberg, A.M.I.E.E., A.M.I.E.Aust., Consulting Engineer. A vote of thanks to the speaker for delivering his address was moved by Mr.

Yuncken and after being seconded by the Chairman of the Institution of Engineers Australia, Melbourne Division (Mr. R. M. Harvey) and supported by Mr.

SLUM ABOLITION

Henderson said that Architects' plans were closely scrutinized by Council staff to determine whether public safety and health regulations were met, but nothing was done to prevent the construction of unsightly buildings. In response, the mayor said that responsible bodies, such as the City Council, do not want to transfer their work to other organizations, however competent they may be. Henderson's proposal that could be developed would be for three or four responsible architects to get seats on the City Council and then arrange for the Council to handle the matter firsthand.

Electricity supply.-The President drew attention to samples of two types of meter boxes for the purpose of electricity supply, samples of which boxes had been made available by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria and which were displayed for information. The five sets of drawings submitted in the competition were exhibited to the meeting.
