with the white cells when added to milk from a mastitis infected cow and give it a clotted or jellied appearance.

Some of the commonly used anionic surface active agents which are marketed as proprietary lines and referred to as detergents and wetting agents are suitable for this test if their composition remains constant. However these should only be used if the formulation remains un- changed.

The Department of Agriculture's dairy laboratory in association with the Veter- inary Division has found in trials over the last 12 months t h a t the Calif ornian mastitis test is sensitive and accurate as a screen- ing medium for field use. Some of the proprietary lines of detergents also used have been found satisfactory.

A proprietary field kit has recently become available and the reagents supplied are maintained in a constant form.

When using the Californian mastitis test it should be remembered t h a t a positive reaction can result from a bacterial infec- tion or from physical udder damage.

Therefore it cannot be assumed that because the result is positive, antibiotic treatment is necessary. Remember also that the test does not identify bacterial organisms, so if the infection is of bacterial origin, veterinary assistance will be needed to decide which antibiotic must be used to treat the infection.

The intelligent use of the Californian mastitis test will be valuable to dairy farmers to alert them early if sub-clinical mastitis is present in the herd.
