WELCOME TO THIS EVENING’S PERFORMANCE OF DANCE 21

QUT Dance is excited to present another season of live performances, with a program featuring works by QUT staff and graduating students.

Dance 21 features new choreographic works created by final-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance Performance) students Kate Utting, Hannah Groom and Grace Campbell, and new choreographic works by second year Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) and (Dance Performance) students Vivian Ho, Adrian Malbasias and Kerrod Box. These works are performed by the second- and third-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance Performance) and (Dance) students.

Dance 21 also features a work created by QUT Choreographer-in-Residence, Csaba Buday and a work choreographed by Darren Ellis originally for the Rambert School in London that has been adapted and restaged by Elizabeth Old Gibbs. These works are performed by the second and third year Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance Performance) students.

We are grateful to you the audience for your support and encouragement of our students through your patronage of this performance event. The students have worked hard to rise to the challenges presented to them and we are very proud of their progress to-date.

We hope you enjoy the show.

Being Human Being

v`

Choreographer: Darren ELLIS Restaged: Elizabeth OLD

Dancers: BFA (Dance Performance) 2nd Year Students Music: Eric Truffaz and Murcof

Notes: Being Human Being was originally created for students at The Rambert School London by Darren Ellis during 2020. The piece was never completed due to the extended Covid lockdown in the UK. Darren Ellis has kindly given permission for Elizabeth Old to adapt and stage the work here for QUT Dance. The QUT version will be shared with the Rambert School where their own version will be performed later in 2021. The work draws inspiration from the world of A.I. The dancers evoke a SyFy chorus as robots mimicking humans.

Much Less Normal

Choreographer: Csaba BUDAY in collaboration with the Dancers Dancers: BFA (Dance Performance) 3rd Year Students

Sound Score: There Will Be Heroes (a corona poem) Spoken Word: Journal Music: Tom Kavanagh | Shoppers Charged Over Toilet Paper Roll Nine News Australia Spoken Word:

Perter Overton & Hannah Sinclair | Karen at Bunnings Spoken Word: ‘Bunnings Karen’

(Lizzy Rose) & Bunnings staff | ‘It’s un-Australian’ Spoken Word: Scott Morrison | If The World Was A Movie Spoken Word: Hannah Flores Music: Mattia Cupelli

Notes: Much Less Normal is a response to 2020. The work was created in semester 2 of 2020 however, due to COVID-19 restrictions was not performed. I am thrilled that the dancers have this opportunity to present the work tonight.

Tandem

Choreographer: Adrian 'Buddy' MALBASIAS

Dancers: Jaide CAMILLERI, Nadege MINDEL, Lyn NAGAYAMA, Ella RALPH, Alexandra RICHARDSON, Calissa SMITH, Målfrid SØNDENAA, Kai TABERNER, Kate UTTING, Katie VAN DER GRAAF, Emma WALTON, Rachel WAT, Katie WEBSE, Gwynneth WISE, Grace WHITE, Krystal WOOLASTON

Music: Tandem Distiller by Pomassl, MIA Matangi Mix (Edited by Buddy)

Notes: Stemming from the human condition and phenomenological experiences, Tandem explores the quote “Not letting go of the past keeps your future on hold”, as a personification of shadows through scenarios of struggle.

Tandems are bicycles for two riders, one behind the other. Similarly, shadows exist as attachments of individuals, following one’s every step. Exploring themes of regret, anxiety and social hierarchy, the performers navigate the boundaries of human’s disconnected minds typified by shadows. These shadows — an embodiment of apprehension — emerge into human existence; the dancers are caught in a constant tension between personal trauma and the desire for re-birth.

Conscious

Choreographer: Kerrod BOX in collaboration with Dancers

Dancers: Hannah BADEN-CLAY, Maddison BOWYER, Clare DARK, Madi FARRELL, Hannah GROOM, Nadege MINDEL, Lyn NAGAYAMA, Ella RALPH, Floriane SEVAULT, Taylor

SEYMOUR, Emma WALTON, Rachel WAT, Katie WEBSE, Gwynneth WISE, Mercedes WOODROW, Krystal WOOLASTON

Music: Eva by Ben Frost; Crawl Space by Dave Porter

Notes:Conscious explores the struggle of balance through contemporary dance.

Throughout this piece ideas of; “Giving is good, taking is allowed, taking too much is greed, to become aware of relativity is the purpose”, were used to dive into this theme. From this, innovative movement was created amongst the dancers and choreographer to produce an atmosphere of tentative willingness. Water has been used as a catalyst for this piece, to create cohesive movement qualities and opposing styles, as derived from the possibilities of water. Conscious uses this collection of languages to create a textured narrative in collaboration with Dance Performance students.

Ɉɔɘʇʇɘ & ɘƨυɒɔ | cause & effect

Choreographer: Vivian Hannah HO

Dancers: Semara CARRA, Rose DEARDEN, Isla MARACA, Alexandra RICHARDSON, Calissa SMITH, Skyla WHITE

Music: Bending Surges by Son Lux & ‘Untitled’ Original Soundtrack by Andrew Winghart Notes: Causation. The action and reaction. But what if you didn’t react the way you were meant to?

Unoriginally Original

Choreographer: Hannah GROOM and Grace CAMPBELL

Dancers: Hannah BADEN-CLAY, Maddison BOWYER, Kerrod BOX, Clare DARK, Madi FARRELL, Floriane SEVAULT, Taylor SEYMOUR, Målfrid SØNDENAA, Lucy TURNER, Kate UTTING, Katie VAN DER GRAAF, Mercedes WOODROW

Music: Anagramme of My Love by Huerco S., Opal by Byetone & Tij by Battles

Notes: Unoriginally Original is an exploration of an individual’s perception of their own originality and uniqueness.  Everyone has the ability to possess originality before being exposed to and acknowledging that someone else has previously had that same idea.

Persuaded by societal pressures, we often try to squash these feelings of perceived originality to conform and blend in with "normality". However, when uniqueness and collaboration is embraced mutually, the possibilities for growth and exploration become limitless. Through this collective ownership of ideas different perspectives, pathways and options become available.

The Wind of Wall Street

The Wind of Wall Street

Choreographer: Kate UTTING in collaboration with the dancers

Dancers: Jaide CAMILLERI, Hannah GROOM, Saska SCOON, Mia SIBLEY, Målfrid SØNDENAA, Kai TABERNER, Katie VAN DER GRAAF, Anastasia VOGELSANG, Grace WHITE Music: Nine Years by Ticklah, Binary : Codes MiniMix by Signal

Notes: The bell rings. A day begins. The pace is set and the traders gamble, grab and grope over greenback after greenback after greenback. A vision of capitalistic utopia dominates their minds as greed manipulates their actions. Money is made. Money is spent. But what is the toll? A wind blows and the world rebuilds. This work for nine dancersexplores themes of greed and selfishness. It seeks to challenge the audience’s perspective of capitalism and its command of society.
