August - Membership and New Club Development Month Are you going to the Dogs?

Woden Rotary’s inaugural Race Night is fast approaching (currently coming round the back straight).

Only a handful of punters have registered for the event so far. If it is to be the success that it has the po- tential to be, we need to spread the word far and wide.

Members are requested to email all potential punters in their address books with details. Use the draft email and poster that John Wid- dup circulated on 8 July as a good starting point. We only have to get ten punters each to have 200 at-

tendees.

Given the States’ recent bans on greyhound racing, this may be one of the last chances for people to have a flutter on the dogs!

What is Rotary Youth Exchange?

Youth Exchange is a study-abroad opportuni- ty for young people who spend anywhere from a few weeks to a full year as an international stu- dent hosted by local Rotary clubs.

Exchanges are for people ages 15–19 who:

- Have demonstrated leadership in their school and community

- Are flexible and willing to try new things

- Are open to cultural differences - Can serve as an ambassador for their own country.

Fabian Golla, our Rotary Youth Exchange Student from Germany is being hosted by Deborah and Peter Schultz.

The Club’s crest & bulletin name reflect ‘Odin’ (Anglo-Saxon ‘Woden’), the ancient Nordic God of Wisdom.

Odin had two ravens called Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory) who flew forth every day and returned at night to tell him what they had seen, so contributing to his wisdom.

 Wednesday 10 August – District Governor attending our meeting (partner’s night)

 Wednesday 17August – Board Meeting

 Saturday 20 August – Charity Race Night (marketing required by all members)

 Wednesday 5 October - Hat Day

 Weekend 28 to 30 October – District 9710 Conference to be held in Goulburn

 Tuesday 1 November – Melbourne Cup race course parking (all hands on deck)

 Wednesday 23 November - Annual General Meeting

 Sunday 30 April 2017 – Six Peaks Challenge bike ride

This is the record of a cosy meeting, which was attended by eight members who braved the winter chill.

President John opened the meeting, noting a few matters such as the calendar (with revisions) has been circulated. Further addenda are to be sent to the President for incorporation. Stephen suggested that the club calendar could be taken online by linking it to the club’s gmail account. This would allow members to add the calendar to their own electronic calendars. Faced with such impertinence, President John immediately

delegated the task to Stephen himself. (Should have seen that coming!). When it is up and running Stephen will give a presentation to the club showing how it works and how members can ‘ingest’ it into their own e-calendars.

Bob Harvey’s widow has endorsed the wording for his memorial bursary, but stipulated that it is to be the “Rotary Club of Woden - Robert Harvie Memorial Bursary”, and the Woden Rotary Club is to be named in particular, rather than more general references to Rotary.

Treasurer Lyn informed us the mystery benefactor (see last week’s Raven) has not yet been identified. Someone has deposited an amount equal to a yearly membership fee into the club’s account, with no identifying information. Stephen cheekily tried to claim it, but was unable to recall the date or branch at which the deposit was made. He then suggested that since we don’t know who s/he “are”, we could call it the ‘Clancy of the Overflow benefaction’, based on the verse by Banjo Patterson:

I had written him a letter which I had, for want of better

Knowledge, sent to where I met him down the Lachlan, years ago, He was shearing when I knew him, so I sent the letter to him, Just ‘on spec’, addressed as follows, ‘Clancy, of The Overflow’.

And an answer came directed in a writing unexpected,

(And I think the same was written with a thumb-nail dipped in tar)

’Twas his shearing mate who wrote it, and verbatim I will quote it:

‘Clancy’s gone to Queensland droving, and we don’t know where he are.’

Things you should know and do- dates for your diary

This is curiously fitting because Patterson’s inspiration for the poem came when he, as a solicitor, wrote a letter demanding payment to the aforementioned Clancy. So perhaps this ‘Clancy’ payment completes the loop!

Preparations for the race night are proceeding. Banners from ROMAC and a display by Shelter Box have been organised. Debbie kindly offered to call other clubs in the district to let them know about the event and invite their members to attend. Others who wish to help with this can speak to Debbie. Shukry raised the possibility of cancelling the meeting of 24 August, which falls just after the virtual race night. All present were in favour, so all that remains is to ensure no guest speakers have been planned for that date.

Past president Debbie discussed donations to the Rotary Foundation, which are partially tax-deductable and can be made by monthly direct debits.

The meal was a seafood pasta dish that made a nice change to the menu. Members amused themselves by comparing who had been favoured with more or less than a quota of prawns. Murphy’s law prevailed as ever, with Des receiving a veritable mother load of marine crustaceans even though he was the least partial to them.

Sergeant Shukry held a short Sergeant's session featuring a few ironic jokes from his vast repository. Lyn was fined for her ‘agricultural’ taste in landscape photography.

Debbie won a bottle of ‘Big and Bold’ Shiraz in the two-up.

Stephen reported that he is developing a system to relay photographs and weather data from his farm to the internet. The photo below shows tractor and dairy cows hard at work (the cows are the spots above the tractor!) He offered to deliver a ‘de-nerdified’ version to the Club at a future date, when the system is more mature.

The cruise photos (see last week’s Raven) sent by John Gray were appreciated but there was concern about the silence on the progress of the seafaring bottle of port.

President John closed the meeting at 7:30 with the current Rotary international motto:

‘Rotary Serving Humanity’.
