The Club’s crest & bulletin name reflect ‘Odin’ (Anglo-Saxon ‘Woden’), the ancient Nordic God of Wisdom.
Odin had two ravens called Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory) who flew forth every day and returned at night to tell him what they had seen, so contributing to his wisdom.

Vinnies Christmas Children’s BBQ Saturday 7 December:
Four Club members were involved in a very successful St Vinnies BBQ. The major role of the Rotarians was to cook dozens of sausages for the very polite and grateful clients of St Vinnies. The BBQ was followed by a very popular Santa Claus who distributed great presents to all the very excited young children. This event was held on the lawns next to the Manuka Swimming Pool.Working with Vulnerable People:
Note: All Rotarians were required to prove that they were registered to work with Vulnerable People before they could help at the BBQ.National Youth Science Forum Home Hosting 12 & 26 January 2014:
Members are needed to pick students up, give them somewhere to do some washing and relax, then return them to the ANU at the end of the day.National Youth Science Forum Dinner 23 January:
At the Ainslie Football ClubPhil Ibbotson:
Phil and Louise Ibbotson have generously proposed the following. They will donate $10 to the club general account each time that the words Rotary Club of Woden appear in a positive way in any of the media to which the general public of Canberra are exposed i.e. newspapers and any of the TV stations . It will not include letters to the Editor and in-house publications of particular interest organisations. Payable when any member of the Club, can announce such an event, but only once for that event.Last Week
The Rotary Meeting was opened by the “late” Sergeant Shukry Sahhar who raised a toast to Rotary International and then passed the meeting over to President elect Lyn Svanosio. Des Henderson-Kelly spoke about his recent actions to attract new members to our Club and to show members the excellent
“Invitation” document that John Gray and Des Henderson-Kelly had prepared.
Des also asked all members to support this key activity by suggesting possible

people or organisations that Des could contact. At this point in the meeting the main meal was served. The Sergeant’s session after the meal was well researched by Sergeant Shukry. It was both funny and profitable!
Adam de Totth, Chair of District 9710 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) informed the Club that any Rotarians that plan to attend either of the NYSF dinners in January or to host students during the middle Sundays MUST register online and pay asap. If hosting students they must be registered to work with vulnerable people. Further information is available on the NYFS website along with registration & payment details. Note: Your reporter checked the website and found this task to be quite difficult to find all these details and requirements.
Secretary Mike Rodd informed the Club of several actions from the last Board meeting. These were as follows: (1) Several Shelter Boxes have been purchased (2) Keith Avent is to be made an Honorary Member (3) Final plans for the Christmas Party are concluded (4 ) A defined attendance
“percentage” for members was not supported. (5) Several swags that were purchased several months ago will soon be available for distribution to homeless people (6) the Rotary Ride is still being negotiated with Pedal Power (7) All funds for the Western Desert Projects have been allocated.
The guest speaker was Mr Jonathan Wills,
Communication Manager, Australian Marine Safety Authority (AMSA). Mr Wills started by noting that 98% of all imports
arrive by ship, hence marine safety is a vital component. AMSA’s role is to ensure that all commercial and private ships are safe, to clean up any spills in the marine environment (eg oil or fuel spills), vessel towing and salvage operations, marine fire fighting, control and maintenance of lighthouses ( many of which have heritage value), undertake search and rescue missions, and provide safe navigation systems. This latter activity is supported with over 500 aids such as buoys, navigational tracking systems, coastal pilots (eg Great Barrier Reef) etc. There are 300 staff in Canberra, and another 100 + throughout Australia. The search and rescue role is carried out by 6 aircraft but AMSA has the power to involve any shipping or planes in the area of concern. This and other functions are carried out by AMSA’s Rescue
Coordination Centre, located in Canberra, that handles over 550 land and marine rescues per year (involving some 9,000 people). AMSA is funded by a levy on all shipping. Several very interesting
questions were discussed, Des gave a vote of thanks for an interesting topic for all.
