A n A c t t o a m e n d t h e l a w r e l a t i n g t o t h e U n i - v e r s i t y of M e l b o u r n e .

E it enacted by the Queen's Most Excellent Ma- jesty by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Council and the Legislative Assembly of Victoria in this present Parliament assembled ond by the authority of the same as follows :—

Repeal of 1.-Except as to anything done or any statute or former Acta regulation made or any right acquired, the Acts mentioned in the Schedule hereto to the extent therein specified shall be repealed.

Short title -• This Act may be cited as " The. University Act

and numbered XXXIV. as is not hereby repealed shall be incorporated and read together.

Tenure of •**•• Every person who at the time of the passing of present this Act is a member of the Council of the University councillors, (hereinafter called the council) shall hold office during his life or until the occurrence to him of some of the- events hereinafter mentioned as vacating scats in the council.

sist of twenty male members : Provided that notwith- standing any law to the contrary no person who holds- any salaried office in the University as a dean of faculty professor lecturer or examiner shall on that account be:

incapable of being elected and of serving as a member

officers in the council at the same lime shall not exceed three.

5. Except as hereinbefore provided, every membcr Tenure of of the councilshall hold office for five years, but shall c o u n c'l l o r s

be capable ot re-election or re-appointment.

6. If any member of the council by writing under his Office of hand directed to the Chancellor of the University re- {'^vacated sign bis office, or if he bc declared by commission or

otherwise of unsound mind, or if he become insolvent, or if he be convicted of any felony or misdemeanour, or it without special leave previously granted by the council he absent himself from all meetings of the same during six consecutive months, his office shall become vacant.

7. Subject to such regulations as the senate by its Vacancies standing orders may from time to time provide; it shall n o w fllleri- be lawfu' for members of the senate to give tbeir votes a t elections by voting papers.

8. No member ot tho council shall bc entitled to C o m^i"°J9. vote either in the council or in any committee thereof |J.hCre iiltJl' on any subject in which he has a direct pecuniary in- rested, terest, aud the vote of any member so interested shall be disallowed.

Subject to the"statutes and regulations of the cmiferred University the council may after examination confer in any faculty except Divinity any degree diploma certi- ficate or license which can now be conferred by any university in the British dominions : Provided that the University may make such statutes or regulations as it thinks fit tor the admission without examination to any such degree ot any person who may have graduated at any other university : Provided also that all persons who at the time of the passing ot this Act have been admitted to the degree ot Bachelor ot Laws may sub- ject to the statutes of the University as soon as they have been during five years engaged in the practice ot their profession as barristers or attorneys be admitted without further examination to the degree of Master ot Laws. . .

16. The provisions of this Act and of the Act with which itis incorporated shall except as aforesaid extend to both sexes, and every person who has fulfilled the conditions prescribed by the statutes and regulations of ihe University for the time being for matriculation or for admission to any degree diploma certificate or license may be admitted to majriculate or to such degree, or may receive such diploma certificate or license as the case may be : But the council may if it thinks fit ex- clude females from attendance at any lectures, but not from any examination in the University.

This Act to apply to both sexes.
