6.1. CONCLUSION
The demand for e1ectricity is increasing at a rate of about 15-20% every year in a deve1oping, country 1 ike Bang1adesh. To meet this increasing demand, the Bang1a- desh Power Deve10pment Board (BPDB) is insta11ing new powerp1ants. The schedu1ed important addition to the generating capacity by the year 1987/1988 are, 150 x 2 Hli at Ashuganj - 230 bus, 210 x 1 MW at Ghorasha1 - 230 bus and 50 x 2 MW at Kaptai bus. BPDB has a '1ong term p1an to increase' the" generating' 'capacity to about 2260 MW by' the year 1990.
Insta11ation of new p1ants changes the short-circuit 1eve1 at different buses of the net~ork. To determine the rating-of' thecircui t -bre,akers as we11 as the properly setting of the re1ays it is ~equired to ana1ysethe short circuit conditions of the wodified network. The information from the short circuit study is thus required to design an adequate protective re1aying system and to determine the interrupting capacities for circuit breakers at each switching 1ocation.

Previous~y the computer aided short-circuit study was ,done
oy
an iterative method using ZBUS. This required acomp~ete iterative so~ution for each fault type and
~ocation. The procedure was time consuming.
The bus impedance matrix method is used here for short circuit calculations. The ZBUS of the BPDB net- work is formed in steps by taking one element at a time
~==by using "an"algorithm. This metllod is veryc'efficient and. require s minimum computer time. to .form.the ZBUS.
Also, the ZBUS' can be easi~y modified for any modificati,on in the network. To study the effect of opening of any line connected to the faulted bus, the related portions of the bus impedance matrix o~y is being modified. Therefore
this method ..for.the. short-circu:i:t calculations is very fastc'as"compared with the conventional method using ZBUS matrix, since-in the ~atercase the ZBUS

to be computed by inversion of the YBUS at each time of opening the lineconnected to the fau~ted bus. The algorithm used here for formation of ZBUS and for short circuit calculations of
the BPDB network, is considerably more efficient than other methods~ Consequently low cost short-circuit cal-
culation of BPDB network can be made to protect the system.

In this study, fault calculations are made for three phase to ground faults as well as for single line to
ground faults. From the results of the short circuit study it is seen that the short circuit MVA for 3-phase faui't is higher than that ljlf,single line to ground
fault at all the buses of the BPDB network except a few generating buses. The highest fault levelis 3917.1 MVA' at the bus -,Ashuganj - 230 fora single line to '"., cground ..faul t. Fault. levels' at',.a11cthebuses' were found
to be higher. for. the network of, the year 1987 as compared with the corresponding values for the year 1984. It is also observed that the fault level at any bus is decreased but the fault contributions in MVA from the connected
lines are increased when any line connected to the faulted bus is opened. For.a,3-phase fault at Siddirganj, the
fault level is 2415.7 MVA and contribution from Comilla (single line)'is .226.1 MVA and. the correspnnding values are 2155.8 MVA and 237.9MVA respectively when the line is opened at the Ghorashal - 132 bus.
The BPDB usually studies three-phase short-circuit at different buses of it~ network using a program deve- loped for this type of short-circuit study. However in
some cases ( at some of the generating buses) the single line to ground fault determine the rating of the circuit
breaker. Moreover, in thA relay setting the fault curre- rits due to single line to ground fault is usually
utilized.: It may -a1so be mentioned that the BPDB follows the convehtional_a.pproa.ch (-the matrix inversion). The program developed here for short circuit calcu1ations will make available to Engineers much more information for protection -or 'the, existing network ,and luso for
pranning:' -a.nd-de-sign--of:-future--'e'x:tens,:Ltbns-c'of-'BPDB-network.

In the program developed, the system conditions during the fault at any bus is studied for a 3-phase
