Abstract
The research intends to find out the present scenario of English Language Teaching in Bangladesh. This paper investigates the challenges existing in teaching-learning and practicing English inside the classroom. For the fulfillment of the requirements of the course project paper. I was asked by my supervisor to visit a school or college.
According to the instructions, I visited Lalmatia Girls’ High School, Mohammadpur, Dhaka and showed the recommendation letter given by my department to the principal of that school. With a view to finding out the challenges, the data have been collected through the research instruments like survey questionnaires and class room observation. ThoughI observed 3 classes and took 3 classes, I had to prepare myself a lot to satisfy both the students and teachers of that school. I was really fortunate because all of them were very supportive and helpful otherwise it would have been impossible for me to fulfill the work.
As it was my first step in practical field, it was a great challenge for me and somehow, I was able to manage the work with satisfaction and gathered a new experience.

Chapter-1: Introduction.
English is an international language and it is one of the most widely spoken languages. So learning English is necessary to cope up with the rest of the world.
There is a proverb that “Practice makes a man perfect”. The person who are engaged in teaching profession only they can realize the situation or condition of English in Bangladeshi perspective. As English is not our mother tongue, it is difficult and confusing to many people. According to the advice of my supervisor, Dr. Binoy Barman, I have visited a school named “Lalmatia Girls’ High School” to explore, analyze and evaluate the present scenario of language teaching in Bangladesh. By observing the English classes and investigating overall environment of the school, I have prepared an internship report finally. I think it is a great opportunity for me to prepare myself for the next stage of my career goal.

Chapter-V:- Class Observation Report
Class Observation-1:
I observed the first class on 7th October at 10:00 am which was taken by a middle aged teacher named TaufiqRaihan. It was English II paper. The topic was Voice Change.
At first, the teacher entered into the class and said “Good Morning” to the students.
Then, he completed the attendance sheet by calling their name and ID. Though the total students number were 55, 50 students were present on that day. The topic that he taught on that class was “Voice Change”. At first he gave a general knowledge about what is Active voice, passive voice and rules for changing active voice into Passive.
He also discussed “Verb patterns of passive voice” and “Table of Tenses in Active and Passive”. On that moment, he used the blackboard to draw table so that the students can clearly understand the topic. Then he showed some examples from voice change of Assertive sentence which I noted i,e.
I do the work(Active)
The work is done by me(Passive) She was singing a song(Active)
A song was being sung by her(Passive)
As his interactions with the students were very good, they were also curious to learn the topic. He also gave some exercise to test students understanding. Though some students made mistake, most of the students performance were excellent. Actually his organization was brilliant and managed the class superbly by the lesson in due time.
At last he gave some home work which will be checked in the next class.
It was the 1st class observation in my life and it was not only interesting but also instructive to me.
Class Observation-2:
The 2nd class which I observed was in 7th October at 11:00 am. It was in class Eight(B) and the duration of the class was 60 minutes. The name of the teacher was Sadia Sultana who was famous in the school for her well behaviour. As the class was English 1st paper, she taught from English for Today and the topic was from a seen comprehension. In this class, 35 students were present on that day. I noticed a matter that when the teacher entered into the class, every students welcomed her with smile in their face. The teacher also behaved as she was their mother.
At first the teacher took the attendance and started the topic by reading a passage thoroughly. As she had a very clear voice and her pronunciation was outstanding, the students followed the lesson without a pin point noise. Then she summarizes the key points and finally told the meaning of some difficult words. Then she gave an exercise in the blackboard to make sentences from a table. Though she gave 20 minutes for completing the task, after 15 minutes she told the answer as the class time was almost over.
I liked her outstanding teaching system and time management.

Class Observation -3:
I observed my 3rd class in 7th October at 1:00 pm. The class was with the students of class six and the teacher’s name was RidwanWasit, a very good looking and smart young teacher. The class took place in room no 31 and total students were 40. It was a digital classroom with multimedia which was well decorated.
The topic which he taught was past of speech. As the students were very little, the teacher used very simple language so that they face no problem to understand the topic. As it was a digital classroom, he used powerpoint and showed some slide to them where there were answers of questions of what is parts of speech, how many kinds of they and examples. The students carefully followed the lesson because they were excited to see different types of tables and diagrams in the slide. Then by using blackboard he wrote some word and asked to answer which was noun, pronoun, verb etc. Most of the students were able to answer and they were satisfied in the class as the teacher was very friendly. In the last moments he gave some feedback and homework for the next class.
I liked his brilliant teaching because he used different techniques to make the topic clear to the students.

At first I introduced myself and for getting their attention I shared a joke with them.
Then I directly turned to the topic which I wanted to teach them.
I discussed definition of Clauses and kinds of Clauses with examples. I also discussed difference of Clause and Phrase as they were related to each other. By using the

As the class time was too short, I was unable to check all the students paper. After all, it was a nice experience for me because they were helpful and well behaved.
ClassTeaching-3:
Before entering into the 3rd class, I made another plan with respected teacher Ridwan Wasit and took the class finally.
The plan is given below:-

Topic: Seen comprehension.
It was 9th October, 10:00 am when I entered into class six to take my 3rd class with the teacher named Ridwan Wasit. In the beginning, I introduced myself but they didn’t pay their attention as they were kids. Then I started to tell a funny story to get their
attention otherwise it will be tough to teach them. By calling their names and ID, I completed the attendance sheet and started the topic.
As it was English 1st paper, I planned to teach a seen comprehension from English for today. At first I read the whole passage thoroughly and also translated it into Bengali.
Because of my perfect pronunciation and attractive reading skill, they enjoyed the passage. I also ensured them that in a seen comprehension, there is nothing to memorize rather they should answer by following the passage carefully. Then I gave

some MCQ, True-False, Short questions, fill in the gaps etc in the blackboard for practice. After almost 25 minutes, I asked to submit their papers and they did it. By observing some papers, I gave them feedback to make their hand writing more good and clear. When I finished the class, one of them asked me whether I will again come to teach them or not. From his inquiry, I was slightly assured that they liked my teaching, but unfortunately I had to say no as it was my last class on that school.
After all, it was a remarkable moment in my life because I got a chance to justify my quality.
Chapter-VII :- Overall Findings:
The school authority, teachers and staffs all are extremely supportive, honest, conducive and helpful.
The academic system and overall environment is excellent.
Most of the classrooms are digital with projection and they are also neat and clean. As the classrooms are well decorated, it refreshes the mind of students also.
The conversation between teachers and students is in English which is very effective.
The soft hearted students were very attentive to their classes and the most of the teachers were also caring and helpful.
Question answering session in class and home work system is very effective.

Chapter- VIII:- Recommendations
The English teachers need to be trained up and supported by the enough materials to use in the classroom.
As it is necessary to make lessons more interesting to hold the attention of the students, the teachers should apply more and more techniques to make the classes enjoyable.
The sitting arrangements for the guardians is not good. So a perfect waiting room is needed.
An English language lab is necessary because it might be a pleasant place to reduce students tension, nervousness and fear.
The environment of canteen should be improbed and it also should be fulfilled with healthy foods.
In the school campus, there should be a natural flower garden because it helps to refresh mind.
Chapter-IX :Conclusion
At the end, I want to say that it was a great challenge and also a big achievement for me to experience the present day scenario of English language teaching in Bangladeshi school. Actually the school visit, class observation and class conducting helped me in a great extent to evaluate my skill in English language. From my point of view, it is very important to make clear that English is a “language” and not only a
‘Subject’ to memorize and pass. And so that, our whole education system should be.
Conscious of and if it needs, the education system and policy should be revised and revisited. Our educationists and teachers and all should work together to provide a appropriate atmosphere to practice. Also the students need to try to overcome the challenges because they actually know better about their weak point in English.
Although the situation improved then past few decades, still there are some scopes for improvement.
Unless we can ensure the English speaking environment around our next generation, we will not be able to face the global challenge to become a global citizen.
