1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents background of the study, statement of the problem,
hypothesis of the study, purpose of the study, significance of the study, scope and
limitation, and definition of the key terms.
1.1Background of Study
It is important to learn English language for senior high school students
because it is a compulsory subject. Based on the Decree of Ministry of Education
and Culture Republic of Indonesia Number 59 Year 2014 about Curriculum 2013
Senior High School/Madrasah Aliyah, English is one of the nine compulsory
subjects. Thus, “It can be inferred that these secondary and high school students
well perceive English as an important means for their career prospects and as a way
to enhance their knowledge and prepare them for advanced studies as well as help
them to communicate with foreigners when they travel to other countries.”
(Kitjaroonchai : 2013). So, it proves that learning English is important because it
contributes to students’ future study and career and also helps them comunicate
with foreigners.
One of difficulties in teaching English is concerned with the low motivation
of students in learning English. Souriyavongsa, et al. (2013) found 53% students
lacked of confidence to use the language because they were afraid and shy when
they made mistakes. “In operational terms, therefore, this means that we learn not
2
discussing and arguing.”(Cohen, et al. 267,2010). The students must have confident
in practicing in learning English in the class.
According to Field (2004:283), “Speaking, one of the one complex
cognitive operations that human beings perform.”. So, speaking is a way for
communication to convey their feelings, thoughts and desires directly. The teaching
of speaking in senior high school is intended to help students who will continue
their study to higher education level. Students of senior high school who plan to
study abroad need to learn speaking English in order to facilitate their study. This
is because English is used in the higher education setting in almost every county.
Crystal (2003) wrote that the factor of English become global language because the
history of English voyage to America, Asia, Africa and South Pasific which leads
English being the official language in every continent.
Problems in teaching speaking are complicated because they involve the
components of speaking such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency.
Whereas, the difficulties in teaching speaking to make the students practice
speaking in English is because of the student themselves. Togarotop (2011)
reported that out of 71 respondents who did not often practice speaking in English,
there are 54 respondent (76.06%) got obstacles related to themselves,13
respondents ( 18,3%) related to environment and four respondents (5.63%) related
to the teacher. From the finding, the writer infer the difficulties of speaking English
is student’s obstacles, the environment that does not support to speaking English,
3
Therefore, speaking is not easy as it needs motivation and practices to learn.
Kusumaningrum (2011) found that “practicing was a preferred strategy as all the
subjects used it. Based on the result of the interview, they usually practiced
speaking English with their friends and their teacher, as well as performing
dialogues with their friends.”. In order to be able to speak English in non-English
speaking countries, students need repetition, motivation and practices to increase
their ability.
Movie is a one of the media that is interesting to watch. Habit in watching
movie is common among students, especially in their spare time. According to
Oxford (1990:71), “In imitating native speakers, learners can improve their use of
structure, vocabulary, idioms, intonation, gesture, and style.”. Watching English
movie is a non-formal strategy that can be done everywhere and everytime to
improve students’ speaking ability. Hsieh et al.,(2009) found that 95% of 254
participants who were freshman, sophomore and junior English majors and
sophomore non-English majors at Yuanpei University agreed that English movie
viewing was useful in language learning.
SMAN 9 Malang is selected to be the location of this study because, based
on the result of the preliminary study, the second-grade students of SMAN 9
Malang interested in watching English movies. So, the writer is curious to
investigate the correlation between students’ habit in watching English movies and
4 1.2Statement of the Problem
Based on the above background, the research problem is formulated as
follows, “Is there any corelation between students’ habit in watching English
movies and their speaking ability at SMAN 9 Malang?
1.3Hypothesis of the Study
Based on the statement of the problem above, hypotheses of the study are
stated as follows:
Ha : “There is a significant correlation between students’ habit in watching English movies and their speaking ability" and
Ho : "There is no significant correlation between students’ habit in watching English movies and their speaking ability "
1.4Purpose of the Study
Based on the statement of problems above, the purpose of this study is to
provide the answer of the research question, namely “to know whether or not there
is any corelation between students’ habit in watching English movies and their
speaking ability at SMAN 9 Malang”
1.5The Significance of the Study
The result of this study is intended to give some contribution for teachers,
students and next researchers. For the teacher, it is expected that the result of this
study can provide them with variation of teaching speaking, especially by using a
5
their speaking ability. For the next researchers, the result of this research can be
used as a refrence for investigating not only speaking skill but also other language
skills such as reading, writing, and listening in connection with the use of movie as
teaching media.
1.6Scope and Limitation

in watching English movies and their speaking ability. Meanwhile, this study is
limited for the second grade students at SMAN 9 Malang.
1.7The Definition of the Key Terms
Some key terms related to the tittle of this research are defined in order to
avoid misinterpretation of their meaning. The key terms are defined as follows:
“Speaking is an active or productive skill. The target of speaking skill is an
ability to express ideas freely and spontaneously” (Fachrurrazy, 2011). In this
study, speaking is the way students express their feelings and thoughts.
“Habit is a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur
unconsciously” (Wikipedia, 2016). In this study, habit is a repetition of students’
behaviour in watching English movie.
“Movie is a medium that shows motion, including DVD, computer
animation and video footage, etc” (Russel, 2011). In this study, movie is medium
which is greatly assist the process of listening, which later will have an impact on
