CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
This chapter contains the initial parts of the study. They are the background of the study, the problems of the study, the purposes of the study, the significances of the study, the scope and limitation, and the definitions of key terms.
1.1 The Background of the Study
Literature is one of the important aspects in learning a language. Literary works are presented to give entertainment, a fun to the readers and some information. Literature is a kind of art, usually in written form (Kennedy, 1983). Furthermore, Meyer says, Literature is a fiction consisting of carefully arranged words designed to stir the imagination (1990:3). It can
be concluded that literature is human’s expression and imagination that is
described through language and it provides the readers with a symbolic written form of words that is designed to manipulate their imagination. Of all those, literature can also be used in education, in which reading literary works can add experiences. The wide range of written materials such as poem, prose, short story, drama and even novel can give pleasure and amusement to the readers.

By reading novel people may get things to learn such as motivation. Motivation can get somebody to do something because they want to do it. It was once assumed that motivation had to be injected from outside and inside, but it is now understood that several differences forces motivate everyone. Morris & Maisto say that motivation is an internal state that arouse us to action, pushes us in particular directions and keeps us engage in certain activities (2003:277)
Education is as a life; education begins from the time we were born until we pass away. These are basic truths of education that if we stop having an education means that we die, because to be a live is to learn new things. The whole object of education is to develop the mind. Merriam-Webster states that education is giving evidence of training or practice and acquisition of knowledge. It is taking ownership of the information given to us whether through formal education or non-formal education (2002:03). Education is really important and it is a necessity for us, to have a better life and a better future. We need to get the best of education that we want. It is worth to have the knowledge, intellect, the capacity to participate in the world and it can change our life tremendously.
