ABSTRACT
This paper is based on the job training at Ardan Radio Bandung located Jalan Cipaganti 159 Bandung. The job training was started from 15th of July to 20th of August 2011. While doing the job training, the writer was assigned as an announcer. This paper describes the using of transition signals in radio broadcasting and determines the importance of using it in radio broadcasting, also how they are used in it. In writing, the writer took the data from direct observation, worked as an announcer, browsed from the internet, and worked to be the real announcer. From the data analyzed, it can be concluded that, the use of transition signals in the radio broadcasting is very helpful in conveying different information at one time. This could be perceived by the listener easily when the announcer can connect one information to the other information smoothly by using transition signal. They can get the information easier.

Laporan ini berdasarkan praktik kerja di Radi Ardan, yang berlokasi di Jalan Cipaganti 159 Bandung. Praktik kerja ini dilaksanakan pada tanggal 15 Juli sampai dengan 20 Agustus 2011. Selama menjalani praktik kerja, penulis ditugaskan sebagai penyiar. Laporan ini menjelaskan mengenai penggunaan transitional signals dalam penyiaran radio dan juga medeterminasi pentingnya penggunaan transitional signals
dan cara mereka digunakan. Dalam menulis, penulis mengambil data dari observasi langsung, mencari data dari internet, dan bekerja menjadi penyiar sesungguhnya. Dari data yang dianalisis dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan transition signal pada penyiaran radio sangatlah membantu dalam menyampaikan informasi yang berbeda dalam satu waktu. Ini dapat dirasakan oleh pendengar saat penyiar dapat menghubungkan satu informasi dengan informasinya secara halus dengan menggunakan transitional signals. Mereka dapat menerima informasi nya lebih mudah.

Banceuy adalah nama jalan di kota Bandung yang perpotongannya
dari jalan Asia Afrika. Di Jalan ini kita bisa mengunjungi salah satu

. Selain pabrik, disini juga tokonya.
Jadi sambil lihat pembuatan kopi, kita bisa juga membeli kopi-kopinya.

sebagai kampung yang bersatu dengan istal (kandang kuda)

Kampung disini artinya tempat tinggal pera pengurus kuda (dan
keretanya). Dengan demikian penamaan daerah ini dilakukan atau
diadaptasi berdasarkan fenomena sosiologis. Yaitu kondisi yang pernah
terjadi di daerah tersebut berkenaan pula dengan hal-hal yang pernah
dialami oleh masyarakat
2. Cihampelas berasal dari gabungan dua kata.
2. Hampelas = Nama jenis pohon yang daunnya kasar, seperti
kertas amril (ampelas) yang digunakan untuk menggosok atau
menghaluskan besi dan kayu.
So, Cihampelas jika diartikan secara bebas dapat memiliki dua
pengertian. Pertama, air yang memiliki khasiat untuk menghaluskan kulit
atau membersihkan hal lainnya. Kedua, sebuah daerah aliran sungai yang
disekitarnya terdapat banyak pohon Hampelas.
3. Buah Batu
Bandung itu dahulunya adalah sebuah danau yang super luas. Seiring
berjalannya waktu, air danau ini menyusut dan bermunculanlah
sembulan-sembulan daratan yang diselingi beberapa cekungan yang
masih tergenang air. Diantara sekian jumlah cekungan air, terdapat
sebuah telaga yang banyak mengandung bebatuan.

Jalan yang pada masa pemerintahan kolonial bernama Groote Lengkong
ini mengandung arti "teluk".

INTRODUCTION
1.1Background to the Topic
Information is now becoming one of the daily needs for people. It is just like food, they seem to be always hungry of it. They always read newspaper in the morning, watch TV, listen to the radio, browse by the internet, and everything they do just to get the information.
To get the information, we have mass media. The mass media can be divided into two, namely print and electronic media. Electronic media that meet the criteria of the mass media are radio broadcasts, television, film, and online media (internet).
Radio broadcasting is one of the mass media in mass communication. Radio broadcasting has its own style to convey a message to the listeners. Radio-style broadcast is caused by the nature of the radio broadcast that includes (1) Auditory, (2) Radio is the now, (3) Imaginative, (4) Familiar, (5) Maintaining Mobility, (6) Conversation Style (Keep it Simple, Keep it Short, Keep it Conversational)
see how good and creative is the radio announcer when they can do that conversation style by their own style.
To make that kind of conversation style, the announcer needs the technique to read the script. As stated by Asep Syamsul M. Romli on his book entitled “Broadcast
Jornalism” (2004) , he states that:
Naskah berita (script) adalah materi siaran yang akan disampaikan penyiar dalam siaran dengan teknik “membaca naskah”. Selain berfungsi sebagai materi atau bahan siaran, script juga berfungsi sebagai pengendalian siaran agar tepat waktu dan sesuai visi-misi program, penyeragaman tata bahasa bagi
penyiar (standarisasi kata), dan pembentuk “image” radio dibenak pendengar dalam memberikan informasi.
From the statement above, we can how the announce should be doing like reading the script with technique, control the show to be on time, and etc. It can be said that, the announcer will have a lot of scripts to read but they have to control the time also to finish their show with on time. How to read a lot of information on the script only in the limited time? They how to use the technique of reading the script. It is called “bridging”. For bridging one information to another, we need transition signals.
For that reason, the writer chose the title “Transition Signals Used in Radio Broadcasting” for her job training report. It is an interesting analysis because the real writer’s job is a radio announcer andthe writer’s major in study is English Literature.
Ardan Radio is one of the electronic mass media in Bandung incorporated in Ardan Group. The author chose Ardan Radio as a place to carry out the job training because of their achievements and their position is quite convincing. As a number one youth radio station in Bandung according to a survey from AC Nielsen and also the woman and youth most radio station by Marketers, the author in increasingly interested to do job training directly to Ardan Radio. The author would also like to know the performance of a radio, especially the announcer, according to the concentration that was taken by the author. The author would like to know how the English theories that have been learned by her will be applied in the real world of work.

The scope for this job training report will be on how transition signal used in radio broadcasting.

This report is expected to give explanation about how the transition signals used in broadcasting when the author did the job training.
1.5The Framework of the Theory
Radio broadcasting has its own style to convey a message to the listeners, especially the conversation style to keep it short, simple and conversational although they have a bunch of information that should be told to the listeners in a very short time. To make it works, one thing that the radio announcer should do is using the transition signals to connected all the words in information that they want to tell to the listeners in a smooth way.
The use of transitional signals as a bridge to connect every words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, or information is effective to make everything smoothly as it is stated in a book titled Writing Academic English by Addison-Wesley (1991):

A number of disciplines are involved in accounting. At the root of all accounting is book keeping. A book keeper keeps tracks of all of the funds that a business handles, including money paid to the business, money paid out, and assets that the business holds.
An auditor is a professional that is responsible for evaluating some aspect of ARDAN GROUP. Auditors are employed in the task of determining the level of efficiency present in the production process, the efficient use of labor and other resources associated with ARDAN GROUP, and the veracity of the financial records of ARDAN GROUP. Along with evaluating a project or aspect of ARDAN GROUP, an auditor is expected to make recommendations regarding the correction of negative conditions that currently impact the ARDAN GROUP.

6. Traffic Administrator
Traffic Administrator at ARDAN GROP are keeping all creative projects moving smoothly. They also continue to improve their traffic system and project management process, keeping the parts that work well and suggesting ways they can do it better. They also develop and maintain of traffic administrator guidelines documentation.
Work closely with agency creative leadership to balance workloads and advocate for appropriate time-lines on creative projects. Maintain workload data for monthly and quarterly metric output.
7. IT & Maintenance
User-friendly assistance for individuals who have technical problems with electronic devices. The technical support team is composed of individuals that are familiar with the ins and outs of devices. With this knowledge, ARDAN GROUP’s
CHAPTER III
THE DESCRIPTION OF THE TOPIC
In this chapter, it will be explained about the broadcasting that the writer conducted for job training course at Ardan Radio. It will also be given the information about job position and responsibilities. In addition, the problems that the writer had during doing the broadcasting will be describe and so the solutions.
3.1 Job Position
The writer’s job at Ardan radio was as a radio announcer. The writer was hosting some programs called Ardan Shine After Lunch, Riaw, Siliwangi, Ardan Special Weekend, and Minggu in the Morning.
3.2 Responsibilities
Here are the responsibilities that the writer had during working at Ardan Radio:
1. Hosting several of the radio programs like:
Ardan Shine After Lunch (a program for accompanying the listeners
who are having lunch with all the western song playlist)
Riaw (a request song program, so all the playlists are requested by the
Siliwangi (a midnight program to accompany the listeners who are still
awake)
Ardan Special Weekend (a program on Saturday morning to wake the
listeners up and cheer them up)
Minggu in the Morning (same program as Ardan Special Weekend but it is on Sunday)

3.3 Explanation
Announcers must have a quick memory and an ability to work under distracting conditions. They mark up the script, delivery written copy, rephrasing as necessary to avoid awkward word usage and provide a smooth intelligent reading. To have a smooth reading, they need to have skill to bridge an information to another one. The device for doing it is called transition signal.
3.3.1 About Announcer
It is stated in a book titled Broadcasting to be Broadcaster by Eva Arifin that:
Penyiar adalah komunikan dalam proses komunikasi, karena ia bertugas sebagai pengirim pesan untuk khalayaknya. Jadi dapat dibayangkan bahwa tidak mudah menjadi penyampai pesan atau berita kepada khalayak secara benar. (2010: 95)
It seems like it is not easy to be an announcer. Therefore, we need to know about the announcer’s tasks, knowledge, and skills first to know how they work in the
radio station.
3.3.1.1Announcer’s Tasks
need to give comment on music and other matters, such as weather or traffic conditions. Seventh, if there is an interview show with somebody, they have to interview the guests about their lives, work, or topics of current interest. Eighth, if they have more time in broadcasting, they can use that time to discuss various topics over the telephone with viewers or listeners. The last but not least, they should make promotional appearances at public or private events in order to represent their employers.
3.3.1.2 Announcer’s Knowledge
Communications and Media – Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.
English Language – Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling words, rules of composition, and grammar.
Computer and Electronics -- Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
Costumer and Personal Service – Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes of customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
3.3.1.3 Announcer’s Skills
Speaking –Talking to others to convey information effectively.
Active Listening –Giving full attention to what other people are saying time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
Critical Thinking – Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
Social Perceptiveness – Being aware of other’s reactions and understanding
why they react as they do.
Time Management –Managing one’s own time and the time of others.
Writing –Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience.
Coordination –Adjusting actions in relation to other’s actions.
Judgment and Decision Making – Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
Active Learning – Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
3.3.2 The using of English Transition Signal in Radio Broadcasting
As we have seen above about all those tasks, knowledge, and skills that the announcer should have, we have to underline these words which are said :
Announcer’s Tasks: Prepare and deliver news, sports, and/or weather
Announcer’s Knowledge: English Language – Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling words, rules of composition, and grammar.
Announcer’s Skill: Speaking – Talking to others to convey information
effectively.
Those things are related to the topic that the writer is going to analyze. If we notice about the relation, it is all about English capability, information, time, and effectiveness. They are forced to convey information in an effective time. On the other hand, the information that they should deliver in a very short and effective time is not a little. They have to read more than one informations in one time. Yet, they still have to read it in a smooth way, not in a rush, so that the listeners will understand. How could they do it? The answer is they have to use transitional signal while reading the information.
As we all know that transition signal is being used to link the sentence smoothly. That is what the radio announcer does, talk many different things in a short time but still have to make those things are smooth, simple, short, and conversational.
These are some examples of the transition signals usually used:
Example 1
“Yes, that was Mike Posner with Please Don’t Go {song}, Do you like that song, insan muda or you just like the singer of that song? Hahha.. I know it.. Mike
Posner is definitely handsome, isn’t he? But, kalau dia ganteng tapi bau badan, mana ada cewe yang mau, ya ga? So, for you guys out there, if you are good looking but bad smelling, hmmm, I am sure that there will be no girls who want to be with you. Therefore, the things that u guys should do is don’t forget to use deodorant!
{ad-libs} Deodorant yang paling bagus sih udah pasti Rexone Men Roll-On dong! after using it, finally you are gonna have a very good smell and I bet there will be a lot of girls will stick with you. Mungkin cewe kaya Selena Gomez bisa nempel juga sama kamu.”{song} (play Selena Gomez’s song).

By seeing these examples, we can see how the transition signals are being used in radio broadcasting. Even though they mix the language between English and Bahasa, we still can see the function of transition signals which are being used on it.
In addition, actually, the transition signal will not be written on the script. It is just the improvisation from the announcer about reading the script by technique. It all comes from the announcer themselves. They choose the transition signals that can fit the information on the script that they want to read. That is why it is important for announcer to know a lot of types of transition signal to make their utterance smoother. It makes easier for the listener to understand what the announcer wants to deliver to them.
3.3.3 The List and Function of Transition Signals

CHAPTER IV
CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
4.1 Conclusions
Transitional signals are connecting words or phrases or sentences that act like bridges between parts of the broadcasting. They are used to get the point of the conversation style in radio broadcasting; “Keep it Simple, Keep it Short, Keep it Conversational”. When used, they provide greater organization within a text and lead to greater understanding and enjoyment on the part of the listener. Although the radio announcer mixes the language between English and Bahasa but they still use transitional signals in English, not in Bahasa.
4.2 Suggestions
practicing to use the transition signals then knowing more about their function, so you can put them on the right context.
The writer also has suggestion for the Faculty of Letters itself. The writer thinks that it might be better if the faculty can have the link of working such as company which has co-operation with the faculty itself. So, the students who want to do the job training can be easier to find the place to do so.
