3. THE ANALYSIS

3.1 Childhood

(11)

He began training by practicing swinging his axe, creating stakes etc. At the age of 12, the one armed man arrived to collect payment from Thomas, Abraham took his first kill, despite his father's warnings that more will come. Thomas was wrong, as no more came for retribution. Smith (2012:68) says, “Thomas stood aghast. “Look what you’ve done,” he said after a sickened silence. “You’ve killed us.”“On the contrary… I’ve killed him.”“More will come.” Abe had already begun to walk away.“Then I shall need more stakes.”

3.2 First Hunt

When he was sixteen, Abe left the log cabin to find work, and found it as a worker on a boat carrying passengers that left when it reached their destination along the Ohio River. Smith (2012:112) says, “ Mr. Gentry asked if I would join Allen in building and piloting a flatboat of his goods downriver-stopping in Mississipi and points south to sell quantities of corn, pork, and other sundries. For this he would pay me the sum of eight dollars each month, and purchase my steamboat ticket home from New Orleans.”

(12)

source in America. To end slavery is to end the scourge of vampires, starting Abe's work in Abolition. Smith (2012:134) says, “The first vampire grabbed the sides of the thickset woman’s head and twisted it backward so that her chin and spine met—his wretched face her dying sight. Another screamed and writhed when she felt the sting of two fangs in her shoulder. But the greater her struggle, the deeper the wound became, and the more freely her precious blood poured into the creature’s mouth. I saw the head of a boy beaten until his brains poured from a hole in his skull, and another man’s head taken entirely. I could do nothing to help them. Not when there were so many. Not without a weapon. The slave master calmly pulled the barn doors closed to stifle the noises of death, and I ran into the night, my face wet with tears. Disgusted with myself for being so helpless. Sickened by what I had seen. But more than anything—sickened by the truth taking shape in my mind. A truth that I had been too blind to see before.”

3.3 First Love

(13)

He began his political career and career in law. He still follows Henry's letters, finding and killing vampires. Abe meets Mary Todd, cousin of one of his vampire hunting partners. The two fall in love and start a family, with Lincoln starting a law firm and elected a term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Smith (2012:205) says, “By the time Abe won reelection to the State Legislature in 1838, he was becoming known around Springfield as an eloquent speaker and capable lawyer.” During his time with his family, Abe began to fear what would happen if vampires discovered him and his family, a thought that continually haunted him in the form of nightmares. Smith (2012:222) says, “My dance with death must end. I cannot risk leaving Mary without a husband, nor Robert without a father. I have this very morning written Henry and told him that he should no longer count on my ax.”

3.4 President

(14)

Abe decides to free the slaves under the South's control, and announces the Emancipation Proclaimation, and takes joy at the slaves violently rebelling against their vampiric masters. Smith (2012:349) says, “Now, gentlemen, let us starve the devils into defeat by declaring every slave in the South free.”

Abe was then called for one last hunt by Henry, where he investigates a cabin that turns out to be a trap. Smith (2012:288) says, “Abraham, I must ask one more errand of you. He is one of your kind-but looked after by two of mine at all times. Take every caution. Jefferson Davis.” The leader of the vampires there is Jefferson Davis, who believes that he will have power when the vampires rule America. However, at the last second, Henry and his vampire allies arrive just in time to slaughter the enemy vampires as Davis retreats. Smith (2012:299) says, “we still lived. Our executioners, however, were not as fortunate. All three fell in unison, bullets having torn through their skulls. It was a miracle. That miracle was Henry Sturges. He charged out of the dark with eleven Union vampires on his heels.” Henry congratulates Abe on the hunt, while Abe retires from hunting all together. Smith (2012:301) says, “Abraham, I’m pleased to see you alive, old friend.” And Smith (2012:302) says, “It would be the last hunt of Abe’s life.”

3.5 Tragedy

(15)

poisons Willy Lincoln. Smith (2012:332) says, “The stranger had grabbed his face, he said, pried his mouth open, and poured something “bitter” into it.” Abe was at first relieved that Willy was healthy when he was immediately checked for illness, but lamented when his son became sick like his grandmother before him and died. Smith (2012:334) says, “Mary could not bring herself to hold another of our little boys as he left this earth. It fell to me to cradle our sleeping son against my chest and gently rock him through the night… through the next morning… and through the day that followed. I refused to let him go; refused to let go of that faintest hope that God would not be so cruel.”

3.6 The War is Won

(16)

3.7 Death

However, the celebration was tragically interrupted when meglo-manic vampire actor John Wilkes Booth plan to kill Lincoln to inspire the vampires to come back and aimed at the back of Lincoln's head and fired at point-blank range, mortally wounding the President. Smith (2012:381) says, “Booth held steady, waiting, as Hawk’s voice boomed through the theater. He crept forward, leveled the pistol at the back of Lincoln’s head, and carefully…carefully pulled the hammer back. Booth fired.” The dying Lincoln was taken across the street to a nearby house where he lost consciousness upon being laid on a bed. Smith (2012:385) says, “ Charles Leale, twenty-three, helped his fellow soldiers lower the president onto a bed on the first floor of Petersen’s Boarding House-directly across the street from Ford’s Theater.” Nine hours later, Lincoln died. Smith (2012:386) says, “Abraham Lincoln died at 7:22 in the morning, on the Ides of April 1865.”

4. CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

4.1 Conclusion

After analyzing the main role of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter in this paper, role is include the character but one of the important elements in novel, besides theme, plot, setting, and point of view.

In Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, Abraham Lincoln is the main role. Abraham is a poor boy who lived on the edge of the country and he fought his way up to the presidency; and then he led the country through one of the biggest, most dangerous wars. But at the same time, Abe is kind of a regular guy, a fact that comes out especially in the journal where he writes down his feelings and thoughts. That makes him just like us.

2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Roberus (1987:1) says “Literature refers to compositions that tell stories, dramatize situations, express emotions, and analyze and advocate ideas.” It is most commonly used to refer to the works of creative imagination, including works of poetry, drama, fiction, and nonfiction.

Eagleton (1983:1) says, “There have been various attempts to define literature. You can define it, for example, as “imaginative” writing in the sense of fiction-writing which is not really true. But even the briefest reflection on what people commonly include under the heading of literature suggest that this will do.” Literature as imaginative writing is reflected from people thought, that is not really true.

(20)

2.1 Character

A character is a television show/series, or dialogues and actions by which the readers or audiences may understand their thoughts, feelings, intentions and motives. In literature, characters guide the readers through their stories, helping them to understand plots and pounder themes.

The character may win, lose, or tie. He or she may learn and be better for the experience or may miss the point and be unchanged.

E. M. Foster (1979:6) says, “ There are two basic types of characters “round character” and “flat character.”

(21)

Flat character in contrast, do not grow. They remain the same because they may be stupid or insensitive or lacking in knowledge or insight. They end where they begin and are static, not dynamic. But the flat characters are not therefore worthless, for they usually highlight the development of the round characters. Sometimes, the flat characters are prominent in certain types of literature, such as cowboy, police, and detective stories, where the focus is less on character than on performance. They must be strong, tough, and clever enough to perform recurring tasks like solving a crime, overcoming a villain, or finding a treasure. The term stock character refers to characters in these repeating situations. To degree that stock characters have many common traits, they are representative of their class, or group. Such characters, with variations in names, ages, and sexes have been constant in literature since the ancient Greeks. Some regular stock characters are the insensitive father, the interfering mother, the sassy younger brother or sister, the greedy politician, the resourceful cowboy or detective, the overbearing or henpecked husband, the submissive or nagging wife, and the angry police captain.

Stock characters stay flat as long as they merely perform their role and exhibit conventional and unindividual traits. When they posses no attitudes except those of their class, they are labeled stereotype, because they all seem to be cast from the same mold or printing matrix.

(22)

Round character is unlike a static character, a dynamic characters does change and grow as the story unfolds. Dynamic characters respond to events and experience a change in attitude or outlook.

2. 2 Role

When you write a character analysis, you must also define each character's role. In addition to having personality traits, characters also fill certain roles in a story. They either play a major role, as a central element to the story, or they play a minor role to serve a supporting role in the story.

A story may have more than eight characters, but all characters (including groups of people or the story’s setting) can serve a particular role.

Protagonist, the character responsible for handling the main problem and the one most in need of change, emotionally.

Antagonist, the primary bad guy. The character that opposes the protagonist outright on all counts, physically and emotionally.

(23)

Tempter, the right-hand to the antagonist. The tempter doesn’t need to know the antagonist, but they both stand for the same thing: stopping the protagonist from achieving the protagonist’s goal. The tempter tries to manipulate and convince the protagonist to join the “dark side”. However, in the end, the tempter can change his/her mind and realize the benefit of joining the good guys.

Sidekick, the protagonist’s unconditionally loving friend. This character can get frustrated with the protagonist and have doubts, but will always stand by the protagonist in the end. Typically, the sidekick embodies the theme without even realizing it. (The mentor can explain the theme, while the sidekick just does it without thinking and can’t explain it – they just do it).

Skeptic, the lone objector. The skeptic does not believe in the theme nor in the importance of achieving the protagonist’s goal. Without loyalties, the skeptic is on his/her own path. The skeptic may like the protagonist and want the protagonist to succeed but not at the cost of the skeptic’s goals. However, the skeptic may have a change of heart by the end of the story.

Emotional, this character acts according to their gut and lets motions fuel decisions. Impulsive. Reactive. Sometimes the emotional character is right and succeeds in ways that a thinking person would never have even tried, but sometimes the character finds trouble by not thinking before jumping.

(24)

2.3 History

History (from investigation") is an discovery, collection, organization, and presentation of events. The term includes generically implied to mean called usefulness by discussing the study of the discipline as an end in itself and as a way of providing "perspective" on the problems of the present. Stories common to a particular culture, but not supported by external sources (such as the tales surroundi because they do not support the "disinterested investigation" required of the discipline of history. Events occurring prior to written record are considered

(25)

2.3.1 Etymology

The word entered the "relation of incidents, story". In general. The restriction to the meaning "record of past events" arose in the late 15th century. It was still in the Greek sense that the late 16th century, when he wrote about him, historia was "the knowledge of objects determined by space and time", that sort of knowledge provided by a

In an expression of the linguistic

史 vs. 诌) now designates separate words for

human history and Germanic and Romance languages, which are solidly synthetic and highly inflected, the same word is still used to mean both "history" and "story". The adjective historical is attested from 1661, and historic from 1669.

(26)

2.3.2 Description

Historians write in the context of their own time, and with due regard to the current dominant ideas of how to interpret the past, and sometimes write to provide lessons for their own society. In the words of history is contemporary history". History is facilitated by the formation of a 'true discourse of past' through the production of narrative and analysis of past events relating to the human race. The modern discipline of history is dedicated to the institutional production of this discourse.

All events that are remembered and preserved in some authentic form constitute the historical record. The task of historical discourse is to identify the sources which can most usefully contribute to the production of accurate accounts of past. Therefore, the constitution of the historian's archive is a result of circumscribing a more general archive by invalidating the usage of certain texts and documents (by falsifying their claims to represent the 'true past').
