CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter consists of statement of problem, purpose of study, significance
of study, scope and limitation, and definition of key term.
1.1. Background of the Study
According to Pop (2005:60), literature is certain kinds of artistic or aesthetic
writing which are reckoned to be especially creative and imaginative, fictional (non
factual, stories (non histories), and to be the product of especially gifted or talented
writers called author. There are many products of literature, they are poetry, drama,
prose, and novel (Gillies and Mahood: 2007).
According to Peck J and Cole M (1993), novel is a humanist development that
looks at the complexities of our daily activities and it told us through telling a story.
There are some of predicaments, perhaps against other people or social conventions
or simply within the mind. The statement means that a novel can be produced by our
experience or other’s people experience.
Reading novel makes people come to the story. We can laugh when we read
comedy, but we also can be sad when we read a sad story. That is a proof that novel
or story can give effect on our feeling. The researcher thinks that story can be
he/she can learn the lesson behind the story. And he/ she will know how to be a good
man.
Reading novel seriously can make readers know about theme, character, plot,
setting, etc. All of them are included in elements of novel. Elements of novel are very
important. One of ways to understand a story is through character. Character is
central concept in traditional approaches to narrative, especially novels, plays, and
film (Pope: 2002).
According Jones and Gerard (1983:66), essentially, we need other people for
their helps on us; through the rewards (helps) they can help us to avoid and solve our
problems. We also need others for information they can provide about our world and
about ourselves. So, based on that statement we know that help of other people can
give impact to our life.
Sometimes we never respect helps from the other people, and we think it does
not matter. Researcher tries to prove it is wrong, it can be proved by Watson who
often helps Sherlock Holmes to solve his cases. The researcher hopes through this
study, readers can learn something from the fiction product and can apply that on the
real life. The researcher wish, it makes many people more respects other people and
wants to help each other.
The researcher chooses the novel “Adventure of Sherlock Holmes” as his
study, because it is one of popular detective novels written by Sir Arthur Conan
support the researcher’s study. On the other hand, this novel has many readers and
fans in the world. So, the researcher hopes it can be easier to give examples for the
readers.
The researcher chooses Watson because he is one of important main
characters in this novel. Watson is very often assisting Sherlock Holmes to solve the
case at hand. Watson often provides ideas and actions required by Sherlock. In
addition, Watson is an assistant who is very excellent and thorough.

1.5. Scope and Limitation.
There are many topics we can analyze from these stories of Sherlock Holmes.
However, this thesis tries to analyze one of characters in a novel entitle “Adventure
of Sherlock Holmes”. That is Watson, especially about assistances for Sherlock
Holmes cases and what are the effects of Watson’s assistances for Sherlock Holmes
cases.
1.6. Definition of Key term.
Adventure:
An adventure is defined as an exciting or unusual experience; it may also be a
bold, usually risky undertaking, with an uncertain outcome. The term is often used to
refer to activities with some potentials for physical danger, such
as skydiving, mountain climbing and or participating in extreme sports. The term also
broadly refers to any enterprise that is potentially fraught with physical, financial or
psychological risk, such as a business venture, a love affair, or other major life

Watson is Sherlock Holmes’s assistant. He is a military doctor. He has come
to Afghanistan to take care soldiers there.
Impact:
Impact is something to affect or influence, especially in a significant or
undesirable manner; as, budget cut impacted the research program; the fish
populations were adversely impacted by pollution.
Assistance (Altruism): Willingness to help others people event there in not benefit for our self. We just help other people to minimize someone’s problem.
