This research aimed to find out the target and learning needs of Grade X SMA PEMBANGUNAN GALANG Moreover,it had a goal thatwas todevelop Appropriate Text-less comic Materials for learning writing skills.This is a research and development (R&D) study. The subjects of this research were 20 students of Grade X SMA PEMBANGUNAN GALANG. The needsanalysis data were collected by using questionnaires and an interview. Then,the results of questionnaires werecalculated through percentage. Thus, the highest percentage was considered as the needs of students.Meanwhile, the results of expert judgment were analyzed in the form of descriptive statistics. Three units ofmaterials were developed in this research. Each unit consists of introduction, main lesson and reinforcement. These materials used Text-less comic asaninput text. Theunitscovered some activitiesas answering question, filling the blank and completing texts. Mostly, the themes used represented students’ daily life. According to the results of the expert judgment, the materialswerevery goodbased. In conclusionto be used in Grade X SMA PEMBAGUNAN GALANG.

Pendidikan of the English Department, Faculty of Languages and Arts, State

University of Medan (UNIMED).

In completing this thesis, the writer realized that she faced some difficult

1 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study

Language is an effective way of communication of our feelings. Therefore,

It is may be confined only to human beings for communication intention.

Carney (1990) defined language as a set of a few specified vocal symbols

that help the human beings to communicate with others. According to

Hadely (2001), language is a set of sounds by means of which feelings,

thoughts and sentiments are conveyed to other human beings. A newly born

baby is unable to speak. The child learns the language with the passage of

time as he/she interacts with others. In the beginning he makes various

meaningless isolated sounds. It takes time to learn a language. Finally he

acquires language and grammatical construction of the language of his

group by imitation. Human language is transferred from one generation to

another generation through a sound learning process.

Language learning is really important for human’s social development.

People communicate with one to another by using language. Nowadays,

English holds the key as the international language. The use of the English

language is needing in many fields. Even in countries where English is not

as first language and not as the basic of English, a basic knowledge of

Talking about learning English, is not only talking about speaking, listening

and reading, but also writing. Because, in learning English, students use

both speaking and writing in order to communicate with another. The

students start learning to communicate through written form as they begin to

interact with others at school level. The writing skill is more complicated

than that of other language skills. Even sometimes a native speaker of the

English language may experience complication in a tricky situation.

Basically the writing skill requires a well-structured way of the presentation

of thoughts in an organized and planned way. Sentence or a text, the

students have to focus on the rules of writing such as topic of paragraph,

body of paragraph, conclusions of paragraph and so on.

Recount text is a kind of text which has purpose to retell past experience.

Recount text has three generic structures, they are orientation, sequences of

events and re-orientation. Writing recount text means that the students are

able to applying their writing skill in writing recount. Recount text is one of

genre that tells an event or events that have occurred and one of genre that

taught by some existing genres.

Based on study, ideally the students are able to create a form of recount.

Because the students’ writing is an idea that they get from their own life,

beside that, in junior high school level they have taught, so they should have

Based on the researcher’s experience in field teaching practice (PPL) at

SMA Pembangunan Galang especially first grade of senior high school in

academic 2015/2016 the researcher found the problems in writing. when

they write along paragraph, they are not interest because often do not

understand to make words in write the paragraph. So, the students feel that

English lesson is boring. Students also lack of grammar and tenses, less of

vocabulary and none of ideas. All of those factors make the students to have

low motivation in learning English, especially in writing.

Interesting technique can be stimulates the students to learn, it will make

easier for them to receive the material, so the goal of teaching learning will

be achieved. Text-less comic involve making a visual record of invention

and inquiry. It helps writer think and explore about topic and its details from

the pictures on the comic. The main aim using text-less comic is to create

fun atmosphere in teaching and learning process, so students are interested

in English especially in writing. The researcher hopes that by text-less

comic students will be active as participants and they have more chance to

express their minds, ideas and imagination. They will feel something new

and different from what they usually get in their class. This media is

expected to help the students in generating ideas before writing so that they

can write smoothly based on text-less comic they got.

Based on the background above, the researcher will conducted a study on

“Developing English Writing Materials for grade 10th of SMA

B. The Problem of the Study.

Based on the background of the study above, the writer makes the

Identifications of study as:

How to Develop English writing materials which is suitable to the needs of

students of SMA Pembangunan Galang? \

C. The Objective of the Study

To Develop English writing materials which is suitable to the needs

of students of SMA Pembangunan Galang.

D. The Scope of the Study

The scope of the study is developing reading materials based on North

Sumatera culture and characteristic, especially on Karo. It will be applied in

first grade senior high school. And the skill that will be concerned is

writing, especially in recount text.

E. The Significances of the Study

Findings of this study are expected to provide information which may

have theoretical as well as practical value for English teachers.

Theoretically, the findings of the study later will add some new theories and

information in the area of developing English writing materials. Meanwhile

especially in Senior High School in their attempts to develop the materials

in English material. The technique and activities used by the English

teachers from this study are also expected to enrich the students’ motivation

in learning English. Briefly, this investigation can enlarge the teachers’ view

regarding the current issues, especially developing writing materials in

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

A. Conclusion

Based on the result of the study a number of conclusions could be stated. Those

are:

1) The english writing materials which is appropriate to Senior high school in

SMA PEMBANGUNAN GALANG is English writing materials that related

to syllabus and students’ need. The ten grade students of Senior high school

need english writing materials because they want to improve their ability in

writing and master writing skill. The English writing materials should be

developed due to students’ need and level. The functional materials

developed is based on the real life situation to meet Senior High School

students’s need in writing skill. The English writing materials should be

developed through 6 phases, they were; 1) Gathering information and data, 2)

Analyzing data, 3) Designing materials based on the needs analysis, 4)

Validating the new writing materials by experts (English subject teacher and

English lecturer), 5) Revising the new writing materials based on experts’

B. Suggestion

1. Teacher

Teachers should consider the students’ needs to choose the learning

materials. The learning process can be successful if the writing materials were

useful for their daily life and learning environment. The teachers should develop

the writing materials if they found the materials were not suitable for the students

of Senior High School.

2. Institution

The institution should supervise the teachers and ensure them that the

writing materials supported the students’ level. The institution also should find the

books which match to the students’ need. The number of references of English

writing materials had to be increased to ease the students learning English and

Global knowledge at the same time.

3. Other researcher

Other researchers should find many references to support in developing

writing materials. The open questions of questionnaire should be considered to
