1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter discusses background of the study, the statements of the problems, and the purpose of the study, the significance of the study and the definition of the interrelated. Human not only beings can express their feelings but also they can get valuable and useful knowledge by learning literature.

According to Eagleton (2003), there have been various attempts to define literature. People can define it, for example, as “imaginative” writing in the sense of fiction-writing which is not literally true. Furthermore, literature (Hartiningsih: 2001), is human expression which sketches their problems, struggle of life, or even the conflict and something considered to be difficult to understand. It often attempts to convey something important about life. It means that literature can give the lesson about real life to the readers.

audience. Further, Macmilan(1984:734) said that drama is a play performed before an audience by actors and actresses on a stage. Film is the development of drama. It also contains dialogues that tell about a certain story presented by actors and actresses.

Moreover, film is one of the media that contains sounds, animation, pictures, stories, etc. (Wardani: 2006) besides, film is a form of entertainment that enacts a story by a sequence of images giving the illusion of continuous movement. It means that film is a form of entertainment which tells about the story presented by using motion pictures. People can get benefits and valuable things from films. People can learn many things from the films, learning how to struggle to get success, for instance. Films give not only education or knowledge but also entertainment.

According to Wikipedia Enclopedia (2013), “The King's Speech” is a 2010 British historical drama film directed by Tom Hooper and written by David Seidler. Seidler read about George VI's life after overcoming a stuttering condition that he endured during his youth. He started writing about the relationship between the monarch and his therapist as early as the 1980s, but at the request of the King's widow, Queen Elizabeth the Queen’s Mother, postponed in work until her death in 2002. He later rewrote his screenplay for the stage to focus on the essential relationship between the two protagonists. Nine weeks before filming began, Logue's notebooks were discovered and quotations from them were incorporated into the script.

downwards after criticism by the makers and distributors in the UK and some instances of swearing were muted in the US. On a budget of £8 million, it earned over $400 million internationally (£250 million). It was widely praised by film critics for its visual style, art direction, and acting. Other commentators discussed the film's representation of historical detail, especially the reversal of Winston Churchill's opposition to abdication. The film received many awards and nominations, particularly for Colin Firth's performance; his Golden Globe Award for Best Actor was the sole win at that ceremony from seven nominations. The King's Speech won seven British Academy Film Awards, including Best Picture, and Best Actor (Firth), Best Supporting Actor (Rush), and Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter). The film also won four other Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director (Hooper), Best Actor (Firth), and Best Original Screenplay (Seidler).

This study aimed at giving the ideas that films are part of literary works which contain actions and happen in human life that have great value. Therefore, the writer is interested in analyzing Bertie’s struggle in “The King’s Speech” film.

In this case, Bartie is the main actor in the film, and he has some problems when speaking in public. He always gets stammered, but he never gives up to solve his problems. That is why the writer is interested in understanding how Bartie struggles to get success in public speaking.
