Coal Exports Banned During January 2022, Here's the Response of Bukit Asam (PTBA)

T
HE MANAGEMENT of PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) emphasized that the ban on coal exports as stated in the Letter of the Director General of Mineral and Coal No. B- 1605/2021 basically did not have a material impact on the financial, operational, legal issues and sustainability of Bukit Asam and its subsidiaries."Considering that Bukit Asam and its subsidiary, PT Internasional Prima Coal, have committed a long-term agreement to supply coal to PLTU owned by PT PLN Group and several IPPs. However, until now, we are currently calculating the impact of the coal export ban," he explained.
Bukit Asam Corporate Secretary, Apollonius Andwie C, Wednesday (5/1).
Apollonius said that based on the coal sale and purchase agreement between Bukit Asam and the buyer, a clause was set regarding the force majeure condition. The policy changes can be proposed as one of the force majeure conditions.
In the event that a force majeure occurs to Bukit Asam as a seller, then his party is released from all obligations and responsibilities as long as the force majeure situation lasts and this is not considered a violation of the terms of the agreement (Default).
"Considering that the prohibition contained in the Letter of the Director General of Mineral and Coal No. B- 1605/2021 is a force majeure situation, the Company believes...

jelasnya Sekretaris Perusahaan Bukit Asam, Apollonius Andwie C, Rabu (5/1).

the Company believes that there will be no default arising from the agreements with the buyer," he said.
Furthermore, Apollonius explained the steps that have been taken as an action against the ban on coal exports, namely PTBA together with the Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI) and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce have conducted an assessment with the govern- ment and discussed further regarding the policy of banning coal exports.
Through this discussion, his party hopes that the policies issued are fair for mining entrepreneurs in general so that they can also help PT PLN and IPP in fulfilling their coal supply.
On January 3, 2022, PTBA together with APBI have coordinated with the Ministry of Trade where the Ministry of Trade has submitted to the Ministry of EMR a list of companies that have fulfilled DMO obligations. As for companies that have fulfilled their obligations, it is recommen- ded that their export ban be lifted.

ARGA Batubara Acuan (HBA) Januari 2022 mengalami koreksi menjadi USD 158,50 per ton.
Daily News Update Page 5
Agung Pribadi, said that the decline in HBA was triggered by an increase in China's domestic coal production.
"The Chinese government is trying to increase coal production in order to meet domestic needs which has an impact on increasing domestic coal stocks," he said in an official statement, Thursday (6/1/
2022).
Throughout 2021, the HBA experienced a fairly rapid increase. Even had reached the highest level in the last decade. Opened at the level of USD75.84 per tonne in January, HBA experienced an increase in February to USD87.79 per tonne, briefly falling in March to USD84.47 per tonne.
Furthermore, it continued to increase in a row until November 2021 at USD215.01 per tonne. The details are April at USD86.68, May (USD89.74 per ton), June (USD100.33 per ton), July (USD115.35 per ton), August (USD130.99 per ton), September (USD150.03 per tonne), and October (USD161.63 per tonne). However, it experienced a decline in December (USD159.79 per ton).
On the other hand, the arrival of winter in the northern part of the world has caused a sharp increase in the demand for electricity for heating and gas supply constraints in Europe have also been another factor in the decline in prices.
"Countries in Europe are turning to coal for power generation," he added.
HBA itself is a price obtained from the average index of the Indonesia Coal Index (ICI), Newcastle Export Index (NEX), Globalcoal Newcastle Index (GCNC), and Platt's 5900 in the previous month, with quality equivalent to 6322 kcal/kg GAR, Total Moisture 8%, Total Sulfur 0.8%, and Ash 15%.
Agung Pribadi mengatakan, penurunan HBA salah satunya dipicu adanya peningkatan produksi batu bara domestik Tiongkok.
Sepanjang tahun 2021 lalu, HBA cukup mengalami kenaikan pesat. Bahkan sempat mencapai level tertinggi dalam satu dekade terakhir.

Later, this price will be used directly in the sale and purchase of coal commodities (spot) for one month at the point of delivery of sales on a Free on Board basis on a transport vessel (FOB Veseel).
There are two derivative factors that influence the movement of HBA, namely, supply and demand. In terms of supply derivatives, it is influenced by season (weather), mining techniques, supplier country policies, to supply chain technicalities such as trains, barges, and loading terminals.
"Meanwhile, the demand derivative is influenced by declining electricity demand, which correlates with industrial condi- tions, import policies, and competition with other energy commodities, such as LNG, nuclear and hydro," he said. (fbn)
(fbn)

Daily News Update Page 7
"In a joint meeting it was also agreed that the Minister of EMR will issue changes to the DMO which can be reviewed monthly and those who do not comply with the contract will be subject to a high penalty and even have their permit revoked," he said in an official statement quoted on Wednesday (5/1/2022).
When confirmed, the Special Staff of the Minister of EMR for the Acceleration and Governance of Minerals and Coal, Irwandy Arif, said that the ministry is still evaluating improvements to DMO.
"There are no details yet. [However]
Evaluation of improvements is being carried out," he told Bisnis, Wednesday (5/1/2022).
Since 2018, the government has set a coal DMO price of US$70 per metric ton. In 2021, the Ministry of EMR requires new coal companies to supply a minimum of 25 percent of the total annual production for domestic needs.
However, strengthening the export price of coal last year prompted business actors to prioritize exports over meeting domestic supply. This condition then resulted in a deficit in the supply of coal at power plants owned by PLN and independent power producers (IPP).
This situation has the potential to cause power outages for around 10 million PLN customers. Therefore, the government prohibits the export of these commodities on January 1 - 31, 2022. However, the govern- ment assures that this policy will be evaluated on January 5 by looking at the realization of coal supply for domestic purposes.
Meanwhile, during this ban, PT PLN (Persero) said it had secured coal supplies of around 7.5 million tons as of Tuesday (4/1/2022). Nevertheless, the stun company will continue to increase the amount of supply until it is able to reach 20 days of operation. Editor : Amanda Kusumawardhani
Evaluasi perbaikan sedang dilakukan,"
katanya kepada Bisnis, Rabu (5/1/2022).
Sejak 2018, pemerintah telah menetapkan harga DMO batu bara sebesar US$70 per metrik ton.
Editor : Amanda Kusumawardhani

Based on Letter B-1605, all companies holding PKP2B, IUP, Production Operation IUPK, IUPK as Continuation of Contract/
Agreement Operations, and Coal Trans- portation and Sales permit holders are prohibited from selling coal overseas from 1 to 31 January 2022.
Along with the prohibition, companies holding work agreements and business permits above are also obliged to supply all of their coal production to meet electricity needs for the public interest in accordance with their obligations to fulfill domestic needs and/or assignments from the Government to companies and/or contracts with PT PLN (Persero) and independent power producer (IPP).
In the event that coal is already at the loading port and/or has been loaded on the ship, this letter requires that the coal be immediately sent to the PLTU belonging to the PT PLN (Persero) and IPP Group.
Sebelumnya, ADRO melalui anak-anak usahanya menerima beberapa surat dari pemerintah. Surat-surat tersebut meliputi surat Kementerian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral Republik Indonesia Direktorat Jenderal Mineral dan Batubara nomor:
B1605/MB.05/DJB.B/2021 tertanggal 31 Desember 2021 perihal “Pemenuhan Kebu- tuhan Batubara untuk Kelistrikan Umum”

As license holders, ADRO's subsidiaries, namely PT Adaro Indonesia, Balangan Coal Companies (PT Semesta Centramas, PT Laskar Semesta Alam, and PT Paramitha Cipta Sarana), PT Mustika Indah Permai, and PT Maruwai Coal are also affected by this policy.
"The Company and its Subsidiaries are still monitoring the impacts that have arisen as well as those that have arisen from the prohibitions and obligations of the letters mentioned above," ADRO management wrote in a letter to the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) January 3, 2021 ago.
In her interview with Kontan.co.id, Nadira said that ADRO hopes that regulations in the coal industry can allow national companies such as Adaro to continue to exist and support national energy security while at the same time contributing to the state in the form of royalties, taxes, labor, CSR, and others.
Nadira confirmed that ADRO has allocated 11.1 million tons of coal to meet the DMO requirements in 2021. This amount is estimated to be equivalent to 26%-27% of ADRO's total production in 2021, aka more than the required DMO requirements.
"For 2021, Adaro's DMO is around 11.1 million tons. Domestic sales realization in January - October 2021 was 9.69 million tons. With additional sales in November &
December 2021, the estimated total domestic coal sales for 2021 is 26-27% of total production," explained Nadira.
As additional information, currently ADRO has also received an additional assignment of 500,000 tons and has agreed with the Ministry of EMR and PLN to immediately fulfill the additional assignment.

Coal Drama Continues, Japan Asks RI to Allow Exports
Hidayat Setiaji, CNBC Indonesia
C
OAL prices rose again in yesterday's trading. However, the rate of increase was not as fast as the previous day.Yesterday, the price of coal on the Newcastle (Australia) ICE market closed at US$ 161.65/ton. Up 0.34% compared to the previous day.
Thus, the price of the black stone rose two days in a row. In those two days, the price added 6.73%.
Although still rising, the 0.34% increase was much slower than the 6.37% surge at the close of trading on January 4, 2022.
The news from Indonesia caused a 'crazy' for coal prices. The price increase of more than 6% was due to the market response to the Indonesian government's policy of banning coal exports for a month.
Indonesia is the world's largest coal exporter. Without coal from Indonesia, many countries are threatened with darkness because their power plants lack fuel. Japan, for example.
The Japanese Embassy in Indonesia sent a letter to the Indonesian government requesting that high-calorie coal (which is not used by power plants in the country) could still be sent to the Land of the Rising Sun.
"The sudden export ban has had a serious impact on economic activity in Japan and on people's daily lives," the letter said.
Drama Batu Bara Berlanjut, Jepang Minta RI Izinkan Ekspor
Hidayat Setiaji, CNBC Indonesia
H
ARGA batu bara naik lagi pada perda- gangan kemarin. Namun laju kenaikannya tidak secepat hari sebelumnya.Kemarin, harga batu bara di pasar ICE Newcastle (Australia) ditutup di US$
161,65/ton. Naik 0,34% dibandingkan hari sebelumnya.
Dengan demikian, harga si batu hitam naik dua hari beruntun. Dalam dua hari itu, harga bertambah 6,73%.
Meski masih naik, tetapi kenaikan 0,34%

Japan imports about 2 million tons of Indonesian coal per month. Currently, at least five coal-carrying ships that were supposed to go to Japan are still stuck at the port.
Not only ships going to Japan, all coal carriers suffered the same fate. More than 100 ships were stuck in port.

Jepang mengimpor batu bara Indonesia sekitar 2 juta ton per bulan.
TIM RISET CNBC INDONESIA (aji/aji)
Banks can't suddenly stop financing coal, here's why

LTHOUGH currently the banking financial sector is directed to support the implementation of a green economy, financing to the fossil energy sector is not necessarily abolished. Because at this time, the main energy needs in Indonesia and globally still depend on coal.Quoted from CNBC Indonesia Wednesday (5/1/2021), Research Director of the Center of Reform on Economics (CORE) Piter Abdullah explained that although Indonesia currently has a vision of imple- menting a green economy, this cannot be done easily.
He explained that the transition from fossil energy sources to new renewable energy that is environmentally friendly cannot be done in the blink of an eye. To make this transition a success requires a long-term process and effort.
Perbankan Tak Bisa Mendadak Setop Biayai Batu Bara, Ini
Sebabnya

Daily News Update Page 14
Not to mention the issue of financing, he assessed, stopping the flow of funds to support the coal sub-sector totally cannot be done in a short time.
"Currently, renewable energy has not yet developed and we still really need the coal mining sub-sector," said Piter.
Although the concept of a green economy is very good, Piter emphasized, if funding for the coal sector is stopped briefly and suddenly, it can have a negative multiplier effect such as an energy crisis, loss of income, and social crisis.
"So to encourage a green economy, green financing, it doesn't mean that industries that still use coal are immediately shut down," added Piter.
Regarding this problem, Binus University Banking Economic Observer Doddy Ariefianto also spoke up. Doddy said that currently, many financial companies have implemented business sector financing that adheres to Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) principles. In fact, this trend has been developing since 2021.
"It is important for companies to imple- ment sustainability report management so that they are not only oriented towards profit alone, but also have other social responsibilities," said Doddy.
This trend has also received a positive response from the international community. Doddy said that many foreign investors encourage companies to apply the ESG concept.
Especially for Indonesia, according to him, currently developing countries cannot be equated with developed countries. Because developed countries have the technology and finances that are considered mature to utilize environmentally friendly energy.

"We as a developing country are also in a dilemma. So we need to sit down together between entrepreneurs, financial companies and regulators who can encourage it, by providing incentives, either in the form of tax incentives, interest rates, and others," said Doddy.
Meanwhile, BNI's Corporate Secretary, Mucharom, revealed that green banking has actually been carried out by banks with the portion of financing that continues to increase from time to time.
In fact, PT Bank BNI Indonesia (Persero) Tbk (BBNI) itself has poured funds for a green portfolio reaching Rp. 140.5 trillion or 24.7% of BNI's total loans. Mucharom emphasized that in 2022, his party will continue to provide support to ESG.
"We can say that as a pioneer in Green Banking, BNI will increase selective business expansion and prepare sustainable financial solutions in 2022. We will continue to initiate green lending in BNI's loan portfolio to support ESG initiatives, one of which is by increasing the MSME business through BNI. Xpora to increase the potential of MSMEs to go global," he said.
Mucharom explained that financing with a sustainable concept is a source of income with strong prospects for BNI. This will also spur BNI to continue to look for more potential for stronger green portfolio growth in the future.
"Meanwhile, several segments that are included in the green portfolio are financing with the concept of empower- ment, management of living natural resources and sustainable land use, pollution prevention, new and renewable energy and waste management segments,"
concluded Mucharom.

Likewise, Executive Vice President Secretariat & Corporate Communication of BCA, Hera F. Haryn, said that his party is committed to supporting the Government's efforts to develop a green economy.
BCA, he continued, always prioritizes ESG values, marked by a commitment to lending to sustainable sectors which rose 25.6% year on year (YoY) to Rp143.1 trillion per quarter III-2021. This value consists of Non-SME and MSME.
"On the other hand, we see that digitalization with an automated system is also the most effective way to accelerate the reduction of carbon emissions," said Hera.
Regarding digitalization, BCA also encourages customers to use digital banking services such as mobile banking and internet banking, which are now equipped with various advanced features.
Meanwhile, regarding ESG financing, the company will not focus on only one sector.
(ega/hns)
Setali tiga uang, Executive Vice President Secretariat & Corporate Communication BCA, Hera F. Haryn menyebut pihaknya berkomitmen mendukung upaya Pemerintah dalam rangka menumbuhkembangkan ekonomi hijau.

Shares of PT Harum Energy Tbk (HRUM) also declined 1.9% to the level of Rp 10,300. Then, PT Samindo Resources Tbk decreased 0.29% to a level of Rp 1,740 and PT Bayan Resources Tbk (BYAN) decreased 0.28% to a level of Rp 26,425.
However, there were other coal stocks that rose, such as PT Indo Tambangraya Megah Tbk (ITMG) by 0.63% to a level of Rp.
20,500, PT Bukit Asam Tbk (PTBA) which rose 1.11% to a level of Rp. 2,730, PT Indika Energy Tbk. (INDY) by 1.28% to the level of Rp. 1,580 and PT ABM Investama Tbk (ABMM) by 0.36% to the level of Rp.
1,410.
The government's policy to temporarily stop coal exports is considered to only have a temporary impact on issuers engaged in coal mining. Regardless of the policy, coal stocks are still worth collecting this year.
Head of Investment PT Reswara Gian Investa Kiswoyo Adi Joe explained, so far coal producers are still observing the policy of temporarily stopping exports.
Producers are also asking for relief from the government because not all of them violate the provisions regarding the domestic market obligation (DMO) fulfillment limit.
Furthermore, the Executive Director of the Center for Energy and Mining Law Studies Bisman Bhaktiar explained, the policy of the ban on coal exports would certainly have a great impact on issuers and their shares. However, he saw the impact was only temporary so the effect would not be great.
"Market players will wait and see for a while to see the development of conditions and what the next government policy will be," he explained to Investor Daily, Wednesday (5/1).

Bisman also sees that this export ban will not be enforced for a long time. Therefore, in the near future there will be a change in government policy, along with the restoration of primary energy availability for PLN's power plants. Editor : Gita Rossiana
Editor : Gita Rossiana

NDONESIA's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources set its January thermal coal reference price -- also known as Harga Batubara Acuan, or HBA -- at $158.50/mt, down$1.50/mt from December as China boosted its domestic production, according to a ministry spokesperson Jan. 6.
"The Chinese government is trying to increase coal production in order to meet domestic needs which has an impact on increasing domestic coal stocks," said Agung Pribadi said.
The HBA price was $160/mt in December 2021 and was at $75.84/mt in January 2021.
Daily News Update Page 20
The HBA is a monthly average price based 25% each on Platts Kalimantan 5,900 kcal/kg GAR assessments, Argus-Indonesia Coal Index 1 (6,500 kcal/kg GAR), Newcastle Export Index (6,322 kcal/kg GAR) and globalCOAL Newcastle (6,000 kcal/kg NAR).
In December, the daily Platts FOB Kalimantan 5,900 kcal/kg GAR coal assessment averaged
$129.10/mt, down 15.6% from $153.14/mt in November.
The HBA price for thermal coal is the basis for determining the prices of 77 Indonesian coal products and calculating the amount of royalty producers have to pay for each metric ton of coal sold.
It is based on 6,322 kcal/kg GAR coal with 8% total moisture content, 15% ash as received and 0.8% sulfur as received.
Gold price bounces higher ahead of Fed minutes

HE GOLD edged higher on Wednesday, supported by declines in the dollar and worries over the fast-spreading omicron variant, though trading was range-bound as investors await the minutes of the US Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting.Spot gold rose 0.5% to $1,824.75 an ounce by 11:50 a.m. EDT, erasing its loss from earlier this week and returning to a five-week high. US gold futures also gained 0.5%, trading at
$1,823.80 an ounce in New York.
Meanwhile, the US dollar eased by 0.3%, making bullion an attractive bet for overseas buyers.
Benchmark 10-year Treasury yields were also slightly lower after rising to their highest level in more than a month.
Further boosting gold’s appeal was a subdued risk appetite in equity markets, with Wall Street’s main indexes opening lower, weighed by technology stocks.
“Supporting gold is the very high number of covid cases that feeds into the gold safe-haven appeal,” Ricardo Evangelista, senior analyst at ActivTrades, told Reuters.
“The factor offering gold some resistance is the strength of the dollar and the likelihood that the dollar could get even stronger because of the Fed’s tightening monetary policy,” he added.
Markets are awaiting the Fed’s minutes of its December 14-15 policy meeting, due 2 p.m. EDT, which could provide clues on the US central bank’s plan on rate hikes and tapering of its pandemic-era stimulus to subdue the surging inflation seen over the past six months.
“Price inflation that becomes problematic is bullish for hard assets like the raw commodities, including the precious metal. And with some of the inflation worries starting to resurface, that’s inviting some buying interest in the safe haven gold market,” said Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Metals.

Gold prices are firming despite the market pricing of a 70% probability for a Fed rate hike in March, as appetite for safe-havens grow amid soaring infections, rising rates and wobbly equity prices, TD Securities wrote in a note.

India spends record $55.7bn on gold imports in 2021 - govt source
By: Reuters
I
NDIA splurged a record $55.7-billion on gold imports in 2021, buying more than double the previous year's tonnage as a price drop favoured retail buyers and pent-up demand emerged for weddings that were delayed when the pandemic first hit.The previously unreported details of the world's second biggest consuming nation's soaring imports were disclosed to Reuters by a senior government official who requested anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to media.
The 2021 gold import bill easily doubled the $22-billion spent in 2020, and surpassed the previous high, set in 2011, of $53.9-billion, according to the official, who tracks broad import trends.
In volume terms, India imported 1 050 tonnes of gold in 2021, the most in a decade, and far more than the 430 tonnes imported in 2020, the official said.
While global bullion prices drew support from the strong demand in India, the outlay on imports would have added to pressure on the country's ailing rupee.
"Last year demand was robust as lots of weddings were postponed to 2021 from 2020 because of the coronavirus outbreak," said Harshad Ajmera, a gold wholesaler in Kolkata.
Indian authorities imposed strict lockdowns during the first waves of the pandemic in 2020, hitting gold demand during the wedding season and key festivals such as Akshaya Tritiya, when buying gold is considered auspicious.
Gold is regarded as an essential part of the bride's dowry in India, and is also a popular wedding gift.
Ajmera noted a price correction had made gold more affordable for retail consumers in India early last year
Local gold prices hit a record high of 56 191 rupees ($754) per 10 grams in August 2020, but fell back to 43 320 rupees in March 2021, when monthly imports spiked to a record 177 tonnes.
In December India imported 86 tonnes of gold, slightly more than last year's 84 t, the government official said.

Gold imports could moderate in January as rising coronavirus cases have prompting local authorities to impose restrictions, said a Mumbai-based bullion dealer.
"Jewellers are afraid of lockdown. They have scaled down purchases," the dealer said.
China's major coal-producing region sees rising output in 2021
I
NNER Mongolia Autonomous Region in north China is estimated to have produced more than 1.05 billion tonnes of coal in 2021, a rise from 1.006 billion tonnes in 2020, said the regional energy bureau.Inner Mongolia ranked first in China in terms of its coal delivery volume to other provincial- level regions last year. As a major coal production area in China, the region plays a significant role in ensuring coal supplies in the country.
Entering the winter heating season and faced with increasing prices of energy resources in the international market, China has adopted a raft of measures to stabilize energy supply and expand coal production capacity.
The monthly coal output in Inner Mongolia during the last quarter of 2021 exceeded 100 million tonnes, a record high in the past three years, providing 53 million tonnes of coal for power generation in 18 provincial-level regions across the country.
India's coal production stands at 74.8 million tonnes for December
T
HE COUNTRY's total coal production rose 6.74% to 74.78 million tonnes (MT) in December as compared to the same period in 2019, the government on Wednesday said.Out of the total production during December last year, Coal India Ltd (CIL) achieved a growth of 3.79% by producing 60.22 MT.
"India's total coal production increased by 6.74 per cent to 74.78 MT during December 2021 as compared to the same period in 2019," the Coal Ministry said in a statement.
Coal production in the financial year 2022 has been compared with FY20, as FY21 was considered an abnormal year due to restrictions imposed on commercial activities in the wake of COVID-19, it added.
Captive coal blocks registered a growth of 40.98% by producing 8.91 MT of coal during the period. At the same time, Singareni Collieries Company Ltd (SCCL) registered a negative growth of 1.12% by producing 5.65 MT of coal during December.
Coal dispatch increased 14.62% to 75.05 MT from 65.48 MT during December 2021 as compared to December 2019, the statement said.
Daily News Update Page 23
Out of the total production during this period, CIL achieved a growth of 12.70% by dispatching 60.67 MT of coal, SCCL achieved a growth of 2.01% by dispatching 5.70 MT of coal, and captive blocks registered a growth of 43.23% by dispatching 8.68 MT.
The power utilities' dispatch has grown 20.06% to 63.32 MT in December 2021 as compared with 52.74 MT in December 2019. There is a fall in the import price of coal since the end of October 2021. However, import prices are still at a high-level discouraging imports. Further, coal-based power demand has increased by 12.7% up to November 2021 against the same period in 2020.
Coal-based power generation has registered a growth of 11.84% in December 2021. The overall power generation in December 2021 has been 8.32% higher than the power generated in December 2019.
Coal-based power generation in December 2021 has been 85,579 million units (MU) in comparison with 75,620 MU in the previous month and registered a growth of 13.17%.
Out of the top-35 mines in coal production, 11 of them produced over 100% and another 12 mines production stood at more than 80% but less than 100%.
Indonesia’s coal export drama raises questions
By Rebecca Oi
T
HE COMMITMENT to transition towards sustainable energy comes afore as the new year opened with Indonesia banning coal exports due to insufficient supply for its power plants. On January 1, the country enacted the ban as its coal miners failed to fulfill their Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) to provide state utility Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) with 25%
of their annual production.
The country exports about three times the 130 million tons of coal annually to generate 60%
of its 73 GW electric capacity.
“Why is exporting prohibited for everyone? We can’t help it, and it’s just temporary. If the prohibition is not implemented, over 20 power plants with a combined capacity of 10,850 megawatts will be shut down,” said Ridwan Jamaluddin, director-general of minerals and coal at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, in a statement.
Indonesia raised its coal output target
Last year, Indonesia raised its coal output target by 14% to 625 million tons to capitalize on high coal prices. Likewise, the coal miners have a preference to sell abroad as the prices hit almost US$170 per ton as of January.
That’s more than double the US$70 per ton fixed coal price the government placed under the DMO since 2018. At 600-rupiah (US$0.042) per kWh in 2020, coal power is the cheapest option, followed by geothermal at 1,100-rupiah (US$0.077) per kWh and gas at 1,600-rupiah (US$0.11) kWh.
