I. Deskripsi Mata Kuliah

Sociolinguistics is aimed at developing the linguistic awareness of the students, giving knowledge on language functions and how they influence the speakers, developing the students’ understanding on language varieties in their own society as well as others’, and developing the students’ abilities in interpreting other people’s speech. This course deals with the following topics: 1) The Role of Sociolinguistics in Language Teaching, 2) Language and Society, 3) Language, Dialects, and Varieties, 4) Linguistic Varieties in Multilingual Nations, 5) Language Choice in Multilingual Communities (including Diglossia, Bilingual-ism, MultilingualBilingual-ism, Interference, Choice, Switching, and Code-Mixing), 6) Style, Context, and Register, 7) Language and Sex, 8) Language and Change, 9) Language and Culture, 10) Solidarity and Politeness, and 11) Language Attitude. The class activities cover presentations and discussions, analysis on language phenomena in real socio-cultural contexts, and lectures. The evaluation will be based on the students’ participation on presentations and discussions, assignments, mini-projects, a mid-semester test, and a final exa-mination.
