4. CALL FOR PROPOSALS (Funded by the European Commision)

The ongoing outbreaks of H5N1 Avian influenza in Indonesia have had a sig-nificant impact. Since August 2003, more than 10 million livestock have been affected and the H5N1 virus has crossed the species barrier resulting in at least 135 confirmed human cases with 110 deaths. Moreover, the potential exists for the H5N1 Avian influ-enza virus to trigger a human pandemic.

Research on clinical disease, virology and epidemiology of H5N1 In Indonesia is needed to understand the ecology and vari-ability in transmission to human. To foster essential research, WHO requests for pro-posals that will then be evaluated through a review process. The awards will then be made to competent researchers and institu-tions focused on research of local scientist and public health professionals. Areas for research include:

1. Studies of disease ecology, transmis sion and epidemiology.

6. Once, a cap seller was passing through a jun-gle. He was dead tired and needed to rest. Then, he stopped and spread a cloth under a tree. He placed his bag full of caps near him and lay down with his cap on his head.

The cap seller had a sound sleep for one hour. When he got up, the first thing he did was to look into his bag. He was started when he found all his caps were not there. He was wondering where they could have gone. Indeed, he was greatly puzzled.

When he looked up the sky, he was very surprised to see monkeys sitting on the branches of a tree, each wearing a cap on his head. They had evidently done it to imitate him.

He decided to get his caps back by making a humble request to the monkeys. In return, the monkeys only made faces of him. When he began to make gestures, even when he raised his first towards them to threaten them, they also imitated him.

At last he hit upon a clever idea. "Monkeys are a great imitator," he thought, So he took off his own cap and threw it down on the ground. As he had expected, all the monkeys took off the caps and threw them down on the ground. Quickly he stood up and col-lected the caps, put them back into his bag and went away.

Why was each monkey wearing a cap on their head ?

(A) They liked them.

13. An aurora is a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitude (Arctic and Antarctic) regions, caused by the colli-sions of energetic charged particles with at-oms in the high altitude atmosphere (thermospehere). The charged particles originated in the magnetosphere and solar wind are directed by the Earth's magnetic field into the atmosphere. Most aurora oc-cup in a band known as the auroral zone which is typicality 3° to 6° in latitudinal ex-tent and at all local times or longitudes.

Aurora is classified as diffuse or discrete aurora. The diffuse aurora is a featureless glow in the sky which may not be visible to the naked eye even in a dark night and de-fines the extent of the auroral zone. Discrete aurora are sharply defined features within the diffuse aurora which vary in brightness from just barely visible to the naked eye to bright enough to read a newspaper at night. Discrete aurorae are usually observed only in the night sky because they are not as bright as the sunlit sky.

In northern latitudes, the effect is known as the aurora borealis (or the northern lights), named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas, by Pierre Gassendi in 1621. Its southern counterpart, the aurora australialis (or the southern light), has almost identical features to the aurora borealis and changes simultaneously with the changes in the northern auroral zone and is visible from high southern latitudes in Antartica, South America and Austraia.

The following are some facts about aurora, EXCEPT ...

(A) It is diffuse or discrete. (B) It is a display of natural light.

(C) It can be seen in Arctic and Antarctic. (D) It is always bright enough for you to

read a newspaper.

(E) It is caused by the collision of charged-12. Kindly review the attached schedule that is

18. Nowadays, many people have realized that agriculture is much more important than other supporting tools in economic develop-ment. in Indonesia agriculture should be the priority of development because of some good reasons.

First of all, the agriculture's contri-bution in the beginning of the development of the country was the highest of all sectors. At present, almost half of the total Indone-sian labors are working in the agriculture sec-tor, but the contribution of the agriculture sector does not reach 30 percents.

Second, the agriculture sector is ex-pected to fulfill the need of food in the country. As the number of population in-creases in an alarming rate each year, food supply must also increase but the agricul-tural production per capita never increases more than one percent each year, and in some extreme cases, it is even stagnant.

Last but not least, without agricul-tural development, the growth of the indus-trial sector will be hampered because the growth that comes from industry will bring a wider gap into the internal economy in that country. In turn, this gap will create serious poverty problems, wider inequality of in-come distribution, and increase unemploy-ment.

It is, therefore, obvious that the gov-ernment should put agriculture as the prior-ity of national development.

14. What is the main idea of paragraph2 ? (A) The diffuse aurora is a featureless glow

in the sky.

(B) The discrete aurora are sharply defined features within the diffuse aurora. (C) There are two kinds of aurora, diffuse

and discrete aurora.

(D) Discrete aurorae are usually observed only in the night sky.

(E) Discrete aurorae are not as bright as the sunlit sky.

15. We know from the text that ... (A) An aurora is very beautiful.

(B) Aurorae can be seen in the North and South Poles.

(C) Aurora is named after Roman god. (D) Diffuse aurora is sharply defined. (E) Discrete aurora is more beautiful than

diffuse aurora.

27. AGUSTINUS ADISUCIPTO (1916-1947)

Born in Pungkursari, Salatiga, Cen-tral Java, Adisucipto was known as the founding father of the Indonesian Air Force. He was the first Indonesian who flew the first Indonesian airplane. He was also the founder of the School of Aviation, which later became the Air Force Academy.

A descendant of an empu who was one of Prince Diponegoro's troops,

Adisucipto was predicted to have a short life. Mbah Wiryo, Adisucipto's grandfather, said that his grandson was like Palgunadi, a cou-rageous and honest wayang character who dies young. That was why Adisucipto father insisted that his son go to School tot Opleidings van Indische Arisen (STOVIA), a medical school for Indonesian during the Dutch Co-lonial period, and become a doctor. How-ever, Adisucipto's determination to become a pilot was so strong that he dropped out of his medical school to enter theaviation school.

At the Militaire Luchtvaart Opleidings, a school of aviation in Kalijati, West Java he showed an excellent record. He could finish his study in 2 years and was also one of two Indonesians who got an advanced pilot li-cense. For his excellent performance, Adisucipto was appointed secretary of the Kominklijk Nedarlands-Indische Luchtvaart Maatschapij,The dutch aviation company. A natural disaster is a terrible

acci-dent, e.g. a great flood, a big fire or an earth-quake. It usually causes great suffering and loss of a large sum of money. The casualties are injured or died. Some people are home-less and need medical care.

Floods occur when the water of riv-ers, lakes, or streams overflow their banks and pour out into the surrounding land. Floods are caused by many different things. Often heavy rainstorms that last for a brief time can cause a flood. But not all heavy storms are followed by flooding. If the sur-rounding land is flat and can absorb the wa-ter, no flooding will occur. If, however, the land is hard and rocky, heavy rain cannot be absorbed. Where the banks are low, a river may overflow and flood adjacent to lowland.

In many parts of the world floods are caused by tropical storms called hurri-canes or typhoons. They bring destructive wind of high speed, torrents of rain, and flooding. When a flood occurs, the destruc-tion to the surrounding land can be severe. Whole villages and towns are sometimes swept away by water pouring swiftly over the land. Railroad tracks and buckles are up-rooted from their beds. Highways are washed away.

When a building caught fire, the fire-men pitched in to help battle the blaze. Be-fore the pumps were invented, people formed bucket brigades to fight fires. Stand-ing side by side, they formed a human chain from the fire to nearby well or river. They passed buckets of water from hand to hand to be poured on the flames.

The damage of fire did depend a great deal on where it happened. In the country or a small village, only a single house might burn down. But in crowded cities, fire often destroyed whole locks and neighbor-hoods before being controlled.

What can possibly prevent rivers and lakes from overflowing ?

(A) An absorbent bed. (B) A rocky surrounding . (C) A low land.
