The Great Pyramid of Giza, a monument of wisdom and prophecy was built as a tomb for Pharaoh Cheops in 2720 B.C. Despite its antiquity, certain aspects of its construction make it one of the truly great wonders of the world. The four sides of the pyramid are aligned almost exactly on true north, south, east and west – an incredible engineering feat. The ancient Egyptians were sun worshipers and great astronomers, so computations for the Great Pyramid were based on astronomical observations.

Exploration and detailed examinations of the base of the structure reveal many intersecting lines. Further scientific study indicates that these represent a type of time line of events – past, present, and future. Many of the events have been interpreted and found to coincide with known facts of the past. Others are prophesied for future generations and are presently under investigation.

33. The text is about ....

The following text is for questions 35 to 37.

Almost everyone eats bread daily, especially for breakfast. Bread making is not a complicated task. You only need flour, water, yeast, sugar, salt, oil, butter, and an oven.

Choosing good flour is the step in making bread. There are two kinds of flour, soft and hard. Hard flour, made of winter wheat, is a better choice for making bread because it produces bread that has a better texture and taste.

Then, lukewarm water, yeast, sugar and salt are mixed with the flour to make dough. Yeast is a microscopic organism that is capable of producing carbon dioxide. It can make the dough rise or expand. Both sugar and salt give flavor to the bread so that it tastes nice. They, however, have different effects on yeast. After that, oil (such as olive oil, corn oil, peanut oil) and butterbare added because they are essential to make the bread tender. After mixing the ingredients, the dough is sent to the oven.

35. The text mainly talk about ...

A.The process of baking a good loaf of bread.

B. Why bread is served as breakfast.

C. How to select the correct wheat.

D.The importance of bread.

E. How to make bread.

The following text is for questions 38 to 40.

In 1982 Lindy Chamberlain was convicted of murdering her baby Azaria while camping at Ayer’s Rock. In my opinion, Lindy should have been convicted of Azaria’s murder as there is too much conflicting evidence.

Firstly, there is the question of the blood found in the car. It was claimed that it was the baby’s blood. However, the tests used to identify the blood were later found to be unreliable and the blood could have come from an adult.

Another piece of conflicting evidence concerns the dingo. Lindy claimed that Azaria was taken by stray dingo. Some of the other campers said that they saw no dingo, but there were several who confirmed Lindy’s story, and who stated that they heard a dingo’s cry just before Azaria went missing.

The following text is for questions 41 to 43.

The tone for much discussion, over the last 400 years, of the nature of mind and body was certainly set by Descartes. Cartesian dualism postulated an apparently unbridgeable gap between minds and bodies which drove some thinkers to materialism, others to idealism. 20th century thinkers have developed sophisticated versions of materialism, aided by recent discoveries about the nervous systems and the brain.

Some 20th century materialists have argued that mental states are identical with states of the brain, or

reducible to them, in a way analogous to the way clouds are “reducible” to water droplets, or nations to individual citizens. Others have argued for the possibility of eliminating all references to thoughts and other mental notions in a completed account of the brain.

Yet other thinkers have thought that Descartes was conceptually confused. One of the most powerful accounts of mental states and acts developed in recent years is functionalism. Perhaps such mental “things” as thoughts, or fears, or beliefs, are nothing more than names for the way in which certain purely physical things function. Functionalism is compatible with materialism, thought it does not entail it in the way that identity theory or eliminative materialism does.

41. The materialist assumed that mental stated brain is a part of ....

A.body

B. mental

C. idealism

D.materialism

The following text is for questions 44 to 46.

“No, Little Saltee is not a place for mirth. No Maypoles or circus antics. Especially not for Conor Finn” In the 1800s, Little Saltee, an island off the coast of Ireland, had become widely known to those who were imprisoned there as “Hell”. At the age of 14, Conor Broekhart has seen his beloved tutor killed, discovered a conspiracy against the king (who had been like a father to him), and been thrown into the Little Saltee prison and branded a traitor. This has been through the power-hungry efforts of the conniving Marshall Hugo Bonvilain.

Upon his arrival he meets Biltoe, a guard personally assigned to Conor who will do anything to make the boy’s life even more miserable. After numerous beatings Conor is initiated into the “Little Saltee Kiss,” a process consisting of being thrown into a pool of flesh-eating mites and then being branded for life.

“The mites went to work scraping his skin with their infinitesimal teeth. To Conor this seemed like macabre torture: but to his person, these mites were a boon. Plant spores, agitated by the mites, disinfected his wounds, which the mites cleaned by eating all traces of infection. The chipped off blood and scab, diving deep into gashes, chewing back to the bare wound.”

Conor’s only hope for survival is to flee. He has always dreamed of flying, and under Victor’s careful teaching, he has learned much about the process. But how can a flying machine be made in this terrible place? His every move is monitored and every day brings new ways of torment from the brutal guards. As the years pass he fights hard for survival and a place of respect among his fellow prisoners, all the while carefully plotting his miraculous escape.

With this intervention of a wise but blind ex-prisoner, Conor comes to realize that he cannot just “fly-away”. He must let his father know that he is still alive, see Isabella (the king’s daughter and Conor’s dear childhood friend) and save the little kingdom from the twisted plotting of the evil Bonvilain. He knows that his mission has become much more complicated and that he truly risked losing everything if he does not succeed. Though only 17, he has lived and seen much more than most men twice his age.

44. What is Little Saltee called by prisoners?
