ABSTRAK
Komunikasi merupakan kebutuhan dasar (kodrat/asal) manusia sebagai prasyarat mutlak perkembangan manusia. Dalam pelayanan medis, tindakan yang harus dikomunikasikan secara efektif antara dokter dan pasien yaitu proses terapi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis komunikasi efektif dokter dan pasien dalam upaya keselamatan pasien (patient safety) di Ruang Rawat Inap Rumah Sakit Haji Medan tahun 2015.
Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan interaktif. Pengumpulan data melalui wawancara mendalam, observasi dan studi dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data melalui langkah pengumpulan data, reduksi data, display data dan verifikasi dan penegasan kesimpulan.
Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa komunikasi efektif dokter dan pasien dalam upaya keselamatan pasien (patient safety) di Ruang Rawat Inap Rumah Sakit Haji Medan belum terlaksana dengan baik karena pasien belum memahami dan mengerti sepenuhnya tentang informasi yang diberikan dokter karena dokter terkesan terburu-buru. Dalam memberikan penjelasan dokter tidak membeda-bedakan pasien berdasarkan suku, agama dan ras, setiap insiden yang terjadi dalam proses pelayanan kesehatan yang dilakukan oleh dokter belum bersifat jujur dan terbuka.
DisarankanRumah Sakit Haji Medan agar membentuk Tim Promosi Kesehatan Rumah Sakit (PKRS), diharapkan peran komite medik dalam memperhatikan mutu profesi medis, etika dan disiplin profesi medis sesuai kedudukan, tugas dan fungsi komite medik.

ABSTRACT
Communication is a human basic need as an absolute requirement for human development. In medical care, any action should be communicated effectively between doctors and their patients, especially in the process of therapy. The objective of the research was to analyze effective communication between doctors and patients for patient safety in the Inpatient Wards of Haji Hospital, Medan, in 2015.
The research used qualitative interactive method. The data were gathered by conducting in-depth interviews, observation, sand documentary study and analyzed through the process of data gathering, data reduction, data display and verification, and conclusion.
The result of the research showed that effective communication between doctors and patients for patient safety in the Inpatient Wards of Haji Hospital, Medan had not been performed well since patients did not fully understand the information given by doctors because doctors seemed very busy. In giving explanation, doctors did not distinguish patients’ ethnicity, religion, and race. It seemed that doctors were not honest and transparent in the process of health care; they did not explain completely patients’ condition and did not discuss it transparently with the patients and their families.
It is recommended that in Haji Hospital, Medan, to form a team of health promotiom hospital (PKRS),expected role Medical committee should pay attention to the quality, ethics, and discipline of medical personnel according to their position and task, and the function of medical committee
