Resident Spotlight, “This is for Jerry” by Rachel S.
Our resident, Rachel, shared with me her beautiful scrapbook that she made for her grandson, Jerry. She worked ten years on this project with generations of pictures, newspaper articles and her writings of memories. Her youngest sister, Betty, who lives in Green Valley, also helped her with the scrapbook of 200 pages of history. Rachel was born October 10, 1926, and she was the oldest of five children of Charles and Hazel Fleener. Her home was in Hammond, Illinois.
What is so fascinating is Rachel became interested in genealogy when her dad and his siblings did not know their mother’s correct name. She performed her research and did a genealogy tree so the family would remember, and created the most beautiful historical family books. Her dad, Charles, was one of twelve children, three sisters and nine boys, who lived in Bean Blossom,
Indiana, and eight of the children lived to adulthood. She gave her dad and siblings a tape recorder and had them tell their stories, and she wrote a book and titled it “I Remember.” She has a picture of the log cabin her dad lived in.
She had a high school boyfriend, Allen, and they were married after high school. He served in the Army and was one of our soldiers who was at the Battle of the Bulge. They farmed for a time and Allen returned to College and received a Ph.D. in Agriculture. They had a son, Joseph, and a daughter, Peggy, from Oregon, who is a snowbird in the winter.
Her son, Joseph, had a fellowship for college in Germany, and decided to stay when he got married and had two sons, Jeremiah (Jerry) born in 1979 and Louis, born in 1998.
Jerry would visit Grandma Rachel every year beginning at the age of six years old. Jerry traveled all the way from Germany and Rachel would have to show credentials that she was his Grandma so they would release him to her. He would stay for a whole month every summer, and became very close and had many pictures of his visits.
Jerry is an Air Traffic Controller in Belgium and has two sons, Jayden and Jordan. Louis is now in Japan studying for one year and is a sophomore in college in Germany.
Rachel talked of how important it was to her to give her grandchildren a book of their family history. She stated that she had read somewhere that if children know their family history, there is a decrease in teenage suicide because they have something to cling to. There is no generation gap in Rachel’s family.
Thank you, Rachel, for sharing your story and the beautiful book you put together for your family. It wasn’t just pictures and dates but a life historical memoir, so eloquently assembled. Absolutely stunning. Thank you.

Turtle on a Fence Post
(Or The Unseen Hand) by Roz B.
I once saw a turtle that got me to thinking.
He was up on a fence post just sitting and blinking.
I thought of wonders in space distant and far, And how seldom we realize how great they are.
And wonders so close we take them for granted, Like colorful flowers that someone else planted.
And of the beautiful things that are most everywhere, And that an unseen hand must have put them all there.
Why would that turtle provoke thoughts such as this, Causing my mind to reminisce?
Then I realized what I should have all along known, There’s no way that turtle could have gotten there alone!
I had completely lost sight Of that poor turtle’s plight,
Being absorbed with the revelation I’d found.
But, my immediate reaction Was an act of compassion
As I put the turtle down on the ground.
When we feel the touch of an unseen hand Does it just inspire us or make a demand That we pass it along and touch someone too,
Whether a turtle, another person, or someone like you?

Fascinator Hats
We had fun making
Fascinator Hats last month, and the ladies made good use of them. We made them out of headbands, Styrofoam plates and flowers, butterflies, tulle and ribbon.
The ladies worked every day for over a week making hats for their great-grandchildren, friends and themselves.
Comments were that this was the most fun activity they had done, with a tone of surprise.
They wore them the day of the Kentucky Derby, our Royalty-Royal Tea Party for men and women, and for Mother’s Day.
The Tea Party was so fun with lace tablecloths, finger sandwiches, decadent desserts and tea, and everyone dressed up, and the most fun was our hats.
What an uplifting day!
