Research title: “Gender Bias on Liputan 6, SCTV, Women in Circle of Corruption,
28th December 2014” with Dr. Herlina Agustin, S.Sos., MT as the first advisor and
Gumgum Gumilar, S.Sos., M.Si., as the second advisor.
The objective of this research was to determine the position of subject-object,
writer-reader, and the portrayal of women’s rule in society based on the “Women in
Circle of Corruption” text. To elaborate the identification issue, this research used
the critical discourse analysis by Sara Mills which overlooked the text as a space
where journalist and the audience meet, as well as the actors portrayed within the text
as subjects and objects. This text was considered interesting to be researched by
gender approach due to mass media usually used women as a ‘market appetite’. The
writer found that the text was biased and the reportage was out of context from the
issue.
The result of this study indicate that women still become objects to increase
the rating, commodification in media still appears. Patriarchal in the newsroom also
impacted to the construction of the text itself. The text is out of context or the
reportage was turned into sexist. Women representation’s showed on Liputan 6,
SCTV, become a ‘gospel truth’ to the society. Women’s thought in the mass media still has few space to shout their own thought either in the workers (female
journalists) or become a speakers. So that the reportage become not objective and
tend to discriminate against women.
This research suggested that media should be more consider in presenting the
text, give the impartial ideas and more sensitive to gender issues. Women are not
always been the ‘market appetite’ for society, media should be able to provide
another ‘market appetite’ without making women as a objects to increase rating.
Viewers are also expected to be more critical, don’t just accept the ideas that not
impartial from the reportage that showed.
