Speaking is the most important skill that should be mastered by the language learners. The language learners should be able to speak in English fluently and well because spoken language as the prime channel of communication in language. However, they get difficulty to improve their speaking skill because there are accustomed to use their native language in their daily activities than using English. It also occurs in the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 exactly in language class, the students had difficulties in practicing speaking, some of the students are afraid to speak actively, especially when the teacher asked them to memorize the story then spoke about it. The appropriate technique in teaching speaking is needed to improve the students speaking skill. One of the teaching techniques is English contest in class.
The objectives of this research are (1) to find out if English contest in class can improve the speaking skill of the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. (2) To get information about the respond of the students speaking skill of the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus in academic year 2013/2014 by using English contest in class.
The writer did the research for the eleventh grade students of MA NU Banat Kudus in academic year 2013/2014. The design of the research is classroom action
research.This research consists of two cycles and each of cycles has the instrument.
They are: observation and test. Besides that, the writer also applied the research design in every cycle as follows: planning, action, observation, analysis and reflection.
The average score of the students’ speaking skill in cycle I is 78.75 (78.75%). In cycle II, the average score of the students’ speaking skill is 83.15 (83.15%). There
is an improvement of the students’ activity in teaching English by using English
retell a story of narrative text in front of class. The students enthusiasm to follow the lesson, they looked enjoyed during teaching and learning process.
English contest in class can improve the speaking ability of the student, so it is suggested that the English teacher used English contest in class as the alternative
teaching technique in teaching English to improve students’ speaking skill. English

Berbicara adalah kecakapan yang paling penting untuk dikuasai oleh pembelajar bahasa. Pembelajar bahasa seharusnya mampu berbicara bahasa inggris dengan lancar dan baik karena bahasa lisan adalah saluran komunikasi yang utama dalam bahasa. Akan tetapi, mereka mengalami kesulitan untuk meningkatkan kemamapuan berbicara karena mereka terbiasa berkomunikasi menggunakan bahasa asli daripada menggunakan bahasa inggris didalam kesehariannya. Hal ini juga terjadi pada siswi kelas XI MA NU Banat Kudus tahun ajaran 2013/2014 khususnya dikelas XI bahasa. Para siswa mengalami kesulitan praktek berbicara, beberapa siswa takut aktif berbicara, terutama ketika guru meminta mereka mengingat cerita dan membicarakannya. Untuk itu, teknik pengajaran berbicara yang sesuai diperlukan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Salah satu teknik pengajaran adalah perlombaan bahasa ingris di kelas.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk menemukan bahwa perlombaan bahasa inggris dikelas dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara pada kelas XI MA NU Banat Kudus tahun ajaran 2013/2014. (2) untuk mendapatkan informasi tentang respon siswa pada kemampuan berbicara pada kelas XI MA NU Banat Kudus tahun ajaran 2013/2014 dengan menggunakan perlombaan bahasa inggris dikelas.
Peneliti melaksanakan penelitian ini pada siswi kelas XI MA NU Banat Kudus tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian tindakan kelas. Penelitian ini terdiri dari dua siklus dan tiap siklus memiliki instrumen yang meliputi: observasi dan tes. Disamping itu, penulis juga menerapkan desain penelitian dalam tiap siklus adalah sebagai berikut: perencanaan, pelaksanaan tindakan, observasi, dan refleksi.
menceritakan kembali teks narrative di depan kelas, seorang siswa maju kedepan untuk praktik meskipun dia terlihat takut. Pada siklus 2, para siswa tidak merasa takut lagi untuk menceritakan kembali teks narrative didepan kelas. Para siswa terlihat sangat antusias mengikuti pelajaran dan terlihat menikmati proses pengajaran pembelajaran.
