1. Subject and source
Tecomella undulata(Smith) Seem. commonly known as`Rajasthan Teakais one of the codominant species in the desert of western Rajasthan (Arya et al., 1992). Leaves were collected from C.R. Farm, CAZRI, Jodhpur.
2. Previous work
Chromone glucoside (Gujral et al., 1979), ferulic ester (Joshi et al., 1986), quinones (Joshi et al., 1977), iridoid glucoside (Joshi et al., 1975), tecomin (Pandey and Das-gupta, 1971), rutin, quercetin, luteolin glucoside (Taneja et al., 1975), tecoside (Verma et al., 1979), and undulatin (Verma et al., 1986) have been reported from this plant.
3. Present study
The concentrated petroleum ether extract prepared from the air dried leaves of
T. undulataby Soxhlet apparatus, was chromatographed over a column of silica gel.
Elution with petrol}EtOAc(5 : 1) a!orded a mixture of two #avones which were separated and puri"ed by silica gel preparative TLC (0.4 mm thickness) using CHCl
3}MeOH (9 : 1).
The separated#avones were cirsimaritin and cirsilineol. Their identity was
con-"rmed on the basis of m.p., spectroscopic evidence notably UV, EIMS,1H NMR and direct comparison with the published data (cirsimaritin, Youssef and Frahm, 1995; cirsilineol, Devi et al., 1979).
4. Chemotaxonomic signi5cance
We report here for the"rst time the presence of cirsimaritin and cirsilineol inT. undulata. A review of literature showed that this is the"rst report of cirsimaritin and cirsilineol in the Bignoniaceae.
