This research is aimed to find out what the students' error in writing made by the eighth grade students of SMP N 6 Purwokerto and to find out the causes in writing descriptive text. The method of the research that the writer used in analyzing the data was the descriptive survey. The population were the eighth grade students with 216 students . The samples of the study consist of one class or 36 students. The writer uses random sampling. The researcher chose one class in eighth grade randomly by using lottery. The instrument of this research is writing test. The data were collected from the erroneous sentences of the students. The
students‟ errors were classified into four categories based on surface strategy taxonomy. The results were Misformation was the most common errors made by students with 49.41%, Ommision with 22.35%, Misordering with18.82%, and Addition 9.41%. The analysis of the errors shows that those errors found in sentences have two main causes. Firstly, the students tend to make a negative transfer or influenced by mother tongue. This kind of errors is called Interlanguage error. Secondly, the students also make mistakes in the sentences which is caused by lack of language competence as the target language. The error is called Intralanguage error. The two sources of error directly influence to the students sentence in writing.
