yang diproduksi
tahun 2008.
Tujuanpenelitian adalah untuk menguraikan tipe-tipe tindak fi,fiur (types of speech acts) dan
fungsi tindak

Pengumpulan data dilakukan denganmetode observasi (absewattanal method)

INTRODUCTION

Background of the StudyIn daily
conversation, people use speech acts through utterancesto
presenttheir intention, feeling, opinion, and thought.
By
producing utterances, a speaker caninfluence the hearer to do what he/she intends. When people speak, they do not only
produce utterances which contain grammatical sentences and words, but also perform
action via their utterances. According to Yule (1996, p.47), o'speech acts is the action
which is performed
by
utterances". Moreover, when speech acts occur, the utteranceand the action combine and produce the meaning. The speakers expect that his or her
intention
will
be recognized by the hearer.Speech acts are distinguished
by
different aspeetsof
the speaker's intention andhow the
speakeris trying
to
affectthe
audienceor
hearerto
do
something innatural language.
The
circumstanceswhere
the
utterance was utteredwill
affectdifferent interpretations
by
the hearer. Changesin
circumstanceswill
determine the interpretationof
an
utterance as performing speech actsis
known
as speech event(Yule,
1996,p.47\,The terminologies
of
speech acts based on Austin (1962) are locutionary act, illocutionary act,
andperlocutionary
act.One
of
those actswhich refer
to
the intentionof
speaker toward the hearer in doing something is illocutionary acts. Whenand
gentlemen pleasegive
me your
attention",
it
performs
the
speechacts
of
requesting the audienceto
be quiet. Based on Searle, there arefive
kindsof
act that one can performin
speaking by means of thefollowing
typesof
utterances; there areasserlive, directives, commisives, expressive, and declaratives.
Directive
is
oneof
five
typesof
general functions performedby
speech actsthat
speakers useto
get someone else to do something, such as commands, orders, requests, suggestions. We can attempt to get people
to
sit down,for
instance by suggesting,inviting
thern
to
do so, orby
orderingor
commanding themto
sit down. Therefore,by
usingdirective, the speaker wants
to
get someone elseto
do something based on speaker'sintention,
for
example,"Go
there" performs the speech actsof
ordering someone togo
far
awayfrom him or
her.A
speaker has strong relationshipwith
thetruth
of
measurement which is expressed by a speaker. Three kinds
oldirective
utterances arecommand, request, and suggestions (Kreidler, 1998, pp.190-191).
Parker (1986, p.19) said
that
"speech acts canvary
alongtwo
dimensions: directness and literalness".In
his
perspective, directnessis divided into
direct and indirect speech act meanwhile literalnessis
alsodivided into literal
and non-literalspeech act. Moreover, the fact that each
of
these dimensions havetwo
values meansthat
we
should be ableto
identify
four
different
typesof
speech acts:literal
and direct, nonliteral and direct, literal and indirect, and nonliteral and indirect. The
writer
is interestedin
analyzing illocutionary actsof
directiveto
identif!
the typesof
speech acts and functionsofdirective
scope, because the speech actsof
writer takes the data from
"Yes Man"
as American movie (Reed, 2008). This movretells about Cari who has bad
life
because hestili
doesn't know how the wayto
enjoy alife,
thenuntil
the day he enrols a personal development program based on a verysimple idea: says 'yes'
for
everything. Thewriter
considersthis
movie
is
contains manyofillocutionary
acts, because there are several utterances used by the charactersin this movie which apply the kinds of directive.
The example
of
directive functionsof
speech acts can be seen in the dialoguebetween Carl and his neighbor as follows:
Carl :
Okay,Tillie,
there you areTillie
:
Hi,
CarlCarl :
What I can do for you?Tillie
:
Well,I
was wonderingif
you
could help meput
up some shelves.Carl :
Oh, really?Okay, that should just about do it.
Carl gets completely beat up and wakes up the next day.
At
the morning, Carlwants
to
go
out
from
his
apartment. Suddenly,in
front
of
his
door,
Tillie
as hisneighbor stand
up
there.Basically,
she gives more attentionto
Carl,
because sheknows Carl divorced.
Actually
she also widow. But. Carl just wants to respect her asneighbor. Directly, Carl offers his help to
Tillie.
Tillie
feels worried to ask help to him, then she says"I
was wonderingtf
lou
could help me
put
up someshelves".lt
is a declarative form. Based on the context,it
the
same asthe
intentionof
the
speaker.But,
it
is
literal
speech act, because the meaningof
that utterance is the sulme as the intention of the speaker. After
that, thisutterance is categorized as
indirect
literal
speech acts.By
usingthis
utteranceTillie
requestsCarl
to
help
her.The effect
of
thisutterance is Carl understand what she wants at him.
Based
on
those reasons,the writer
is
interestedin
conductinga
researchrelated to the topic discussed and she entitles the research
"An
Analysis of Directiveas Found in "Yes Man" movie.
1.2
Identification
of the ProblemThe analysis
of
illocutionary acts of directive in o'YesMan"
movie focuses onexplaining the types
of
speech acts and functionsof
directive on speech acts. Hence, thewriter's
analysis focuses on three main problems, they are:1.
What are the types of speech acts found in "Yes Manoo movie?2.
What are the functionsof
directive usedby the
speakerin
"Yes
Man"movie?
3.
What are the factors influencing the speakerin
using directive utterancein "Yes Man2'movie?
1.3
Objective of the StudyThis study is aimed at observing and describing the types
of
speech acts andfunctions of directives including the factors influencing the speaker in using directive
CHAPTER
IV
CONCLUSION
After
analyzing the data, the writer findsout
three types of speech acts: directliteral,
indirectliteral
and indirect non-literal speech acts. The functionsof
directiveare
to
request,to
command andto
suggest. From twentyfour
utterances,it
is
foundthat
indirectliteral
speech actsis
the most dominant typeof
speech acts.It
occurs thirteen times (54%), followedby
indirect non-literal speech acts occurs eight times(33%), The leasttype
of
speech acts in "YesMan"
movie is direct literal speech actsoccurs three times (13%). The Indirect
literal
speech acts has the biggest percentagebecause most
of
the
speakers use the modeof
the
sentenceis
notthe
same as the intentionof him
or her, but the meaning of the utterance is the same as the intentionofthe
speaker.Furthermore,
the writer finds out that
the
speakermostly
used
requestfunction.
It
occurs seventeentimes (71%)
request functions.It
happens when the speaker considersthe relative power
or
status between speaker andthe
hearer isdifferent.
Then,the
occurrenceof
suggestion occursfour
times (16%).
Then the command occurs threetimes (13%).
There are moreof
the
speakers use indirectliteral
speech acts. This brings about the effect that the hearer gets the meaningof
those utterances,but
it
reflects politeness.It
is doneto
deliver the speaker intention morepolite
and clearly andfor
being respectedby
the hearer. On the contrary, themeaning is delivered to the hearer when the speaker uses the direct literal speech acts.
