At ·the invitation of his Australian counterpart. SenaU>r the Hon Peter Cook. Minister for
Industry, Science and Tci.:hnology, the Indonesian セゥョゥウエ・イ@ of State for Research and
Technology, HE Professor Dr Ing 8 J Habibie. paid an oUicial visit to Australia from the

Eastern Indonesia wasaccompanied by a delegation of senior officials lo!ether with a business delegation.
The purpose of Minister Habibie's visit was to discuss Australia-Indonesia cooperation, especially in the scientific and technical fields aild to examine Australia's technological centres.
During the course of the visit. Minister Habibie visited Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. He called on a wide range of Australian leaders, including the Prime Minister. the Minister for Industry, Science and Technology. the Minister for Foreign Affairs. the Minister for Defence. the .. Minister for Trade, the Minister for Primary Industries and Energy, the Minister for Administrative Services and the Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, as well as State Governors. Premiers and Ministers.
In the course of the discussions during the visit, the two sides recognised the major
contribution of both countries to the rapid e<.."Onomic growth of the Asia-Pacific region; In
their view, such growth was closely linked to the maintenance of stability in the region. They
agreed that the close politicai and economic relationship between Australia and Indonesia was
one of the key strategic rdationships in the region and tha• it should be developed further.
The rapid イ」ウエイオ」エオイゥョセ@ of both economies. and their increasing scientific and industrial
sophistication, meant that エィ セ イ」@ was new scope for technological cooperation and industrial
collaboration for mutual her:etit. Joint projects involving the most modern and appropriate technology would greatly assist in this process.
The two sides reviewed cxis;ing cooperation between the two countries and were encouraged
by the significant expansion of ministerial contact between the two sides. particularly under the
umbrella of the Australiatlr.:.ioncsia mゥョゥウエ・イゥセi@ Forum. .
The two parties also agrcec ᄋN セ@ continue cooperation under the aegis of the Committee on
Science and Technology ヲa セ ウエイ。ャゥ。OGャョ、ッョ・ウゥ。I@ (COSTAI). indutling in the areas of research
and development and to looi\ for appropriate opportunities for industrial collaboration.

A particular focus of discussions was Indonesia· s urgent need to develop the provinces of Eastern fn<lonesia. Both sides endorsed Australia's range of development as.sislance projects directed at Eastern Indonesia and the Australian side expressed particular intc1cst in
rnoperating further with Indonesia in this region. based on the principle of mutual benefit. They wekomet.I the growth in husiness relationships and other contacts between
Eastern
Indonesia and Northern Australia. They noted that the Northern Tenitory's iWOCiation with
the Brunei/Indonesia/Malaysia/the Philippines East ASEAN <Jmwth Area (BIMP-EAGA)
should f urthcr enhance these links.
Both
sides agieed to enhance their collaboration in the · strengthening of academic c:1pabilities of universities in Eastern Indonesia in the fields ofscience and technology.
Several commercial agreements with Australian firms aimed al strengthening industrial cooperation between Australia and Indonesia were concluded during Minister Habibie's visit. These included an arrangement between AW A Limited and PT Len (Navigation beacons), Hawker de Haviland Australia with IPTN (aero space) and Solarex Ply Ltd with PT Len (photovoltaics).

also concluded between the Indonesian Academy ofSciences and the Australian Academy Technological Sciences and Engineering and
the
Australian Academy of Science. This is aimed at strengthening •echnological cooperation.
Following from a meeting wi1th Austrafja's Special Investment Representative. it was agreed that there is potential for incfeased business alliances between Australia and Indonesia. Minis·ter Habibi·e encouraged Mr Dawkins to visit Indonesia later this year on an investment mission focussing on selected industries. ll is intended that this be followed by a similar mission from Indonesia.
Minister Habibie and Senator Cook agreed to give
high

Collaboration between Indonesian and Australian agencies in the feasibility studiesand
the scopingof
the masterplan o( the Mamberamo Regional Development Project. using methods such asremote sensing/GIS. airborne geophysics. land·based geophysics and LADS_
• Global dimare changt to predict/cope with short

medium term climatologicalchange. Indonesia and Australia will work more closely in exchanging data and experience. This pmject has been previously agreed upon by
Vice
President Try Sutrisno and Prime \linister Paul Keating.• The consta·uction of the Baruna Jaya Harboua· at Muan Dadap, Tangenmg. Australia has olliciaJly expressed interest in this project and its willingness to consider appropriate EFIC finance. The St.'Qpe anti size of the work
