ABSTRACT
Halo effect is defined as the influence of global evaluation that based on personal behaviour, it applies especially if one doesn’t have enough information about the other one’s identities as a whole. While tone at the top is how partner in charge do the supervision of audit tasks.
The purpose of this research is to recognize if professional auditor sceptism is influenced by halo effect and tone at the top. In an organized situation, this research has been held using vignette and ANOVA to examine those three hypothesis. The subjects of this research itself are the auditors from public accounting firm in the area of Central Java and East Java.
Productively, this research has proved at least three new facts. First, an auditor who isn’t influenced by halo effect shows more skeptical behavior than the one who’s not. Second, an auditor who’s supervised by partner with high tone at the top shows more skeptical behavior rather than the one who’s supervised with low tone at the top. Third, this research has proved that an auditor who’s not influenced by halo effect shows more skeptical behavior while either being supervised with high tone at the top or with low tone at the top. In contrast to this, moreover, an auditor who’s not influenced by halo effect will show less skeptical traits while being supervised either by high tone at the top or low tone at the top.

Halo effect didefinisikan sebagai pengaruh evaluasi global yang didasarkan pada atribut individu seseorang, hal ini berlaku terutama jika seseorang tidak memiliki informasi yang cukup tentang semua ciri-ciri seseorang. Tone at the top merupakan gaya dari partner in charge dalam melakukan supervisi dari penugasan audit.
Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah halo effect dan tone at the top mempengaruhi perilaku skeptisme profesional auditor. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam situasi yang diatur yaitu dengan menggunakan vignette, dan menggunakan ANOVA untuk menguji tiga hipotesis. Subyek dari penelitian ini adalah auditor yang bekerja di KAP wilayah Jawa Timur dan Jawa Tengah.
Ada beberapa temuan dalam penelitian ini. Pertama, seorang auditor yang tidak terkena halo effect akan berperilaku lebih skeptis daripada yang terkena halo effect. Kedua, seorang auditor yang disupervisi oleh partner dengan high tone at the top akan berperilaku lebih skeptis daripada yang disupervisi dengan low tone at the top. Ketiga, penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa seorang auditor yang tidak terkena halo effect akan berperilaku skeptis baik disupervisi dengan high tone at the top maupun dengan low tone at the top. Selebihnya auditor yang terkena halo effect tidak berperilaku skeptis baik disupervisi dengan high tone at the top maupun dengan low tone at the top.
