v ABSTRACT
YAYAH NUR ROHAYATI. S891202064. 2014. The Effectiveness of Group
Investigation to Teach Speaking Viewed from Students’ Self-Esteem (An Experimental Research at the Eleventh Grade students of IPA of SMA Negeri 2 Wonogiri in the Academic Year of 2012/2013). First Consultant: Dra. Dewi Rochsantiningsih, M.Ed, Ph.D. Second Consultant: Dr. Sumardi, M.Hum. Thesis: English Education Department, Graduate School, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta, 2014.
This research intends at establishing whether: (1) Group Investigation is more effective than Guided Speaking to teach speaaking skill; (2) the students having high self-esteem have better speaking skill than those having low self-esteem; and (3) there is an interaction between teaching technique and students’ self-esteem in teaching speaking skill to the eleventh grade students of IPA of SMA Negeri 2 Wonogiri in the academic year of 2012/2013.
The research method which was applied in this research was experimental study. The population of this research was the eleventh grade students of IPA of SMA Negeri 2 Wonogiri in the academic year of 2012/2013 which consists of 196 students. The sample of the research was two classes; the class XI IPA 6 was used as the experimental class and class XI IPA 1 as the control class. The sampling technique used was cluster random sampling. Each class was divided into two groups (the students having high and low self-esteem). The techniques of collecting data were self-esteem questionnaire that is for collecting data of students’ self-esteem and speaking test for collecting the data of students’ speaking skill. The data were analyzed by implementing Multifactor Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test of 2x2.
The result of data analysis presents: (1) Group Investigation does not differ significantly from Guided Speaking to teach speaking because Fo < Ft and qo (between A1 and A2) < qt; (2) students having high self-esteem differ significantly from those having low self-esteem because Fo > Ft and qo (between B1 and B2) > qt; and (3) there is no interaction between teaching techniques and students’ self-esteem in teaching speaking because Fo < Ft.
The result of findings reveal that Group Investigation technique is not an effective technique to teach speaking. The research also shows that the effect of teaching techniques did not depend on the students’ self-esteem. Therefore, teachers must select the appropriate teaching technique that is relevant to the condition of the students and the class.
