ABSTRACT

Background

and purpose:

Dow'n syndrome

(DS)

affects

not only

the

child but

also the famil1,.

Having a

child

rvith DS contributes

to

stress

of

the parents especially to mother who is usually the

primary

caregiver.

According

to family

stress theory, stress can disrupt

ramily functioning.

Some

studies t'evealed that higher

family

stress were associated

with

the mother's perceptions

of

having

lorver levels

of

social

supporl.

This

study

aimed

to

determine

the

relationship between fami11

support ancl

family

flnction

of mothers who have a child

witli

DS.

Nlethod: This

study

used

corelational

research design.

The

respondents

of

this

study

were

32

mothers

of a

child

with

DS

aged 1-18 years

in

Durnaguete

City-Philippines

obtained using

putposive

sampling and

referral

from

the

respondents.

The study utilized

two

self-administered

questionnaires

(Family

Support Scale and

Family Function

Scale)

to

identify

the

level

of

famil1

support and the level

of family

function of the respondents.

Results:

A

t-test

for

correlational study revealed that there

is

a significant relationship between tl.ie

level

of family

support and the level

of family

function

(p:0.026).

Conclusion

and

recommendation:

The

finding

implies that the stronger the

family

supporl is, the

healthier

the

family

function

of

mothers

who

have a

child with

DS is.

Future research should be

conducted

with

a larger number of respondents.
