Journal of Computational and Applied Mathematics 103 (1999) 1– 2

Preface

The Second Panamerican Workshop in Applied and Numerical Mathematics was held in Gramado, Brazil, from 8–12 September 1997. As in previous meetings in Caracas, Venezuela, its objective was to provide a healthy mix of Latin American researchers and students, with researchers from North America and the rest of the world. The meeting was run in parallel with a large Brazilian congress on the same subject, the 20th annual meeting of that series.

This brought together around 1500 people to the lovely grounds and superb facilities of the Hotel and Convention Center Serrano in Gramado, a beautiful mountain resort near the southern city of Porto Alegre. We have a debt of gratitude to the local organizers, and most specially to Professor Julio R. Claeyssen of the Universidade Federal de Rio Grande do Sul.

Some interesting statistics show that 15 countries were represented in this meeting, including eight from South and North America, six from Europe, and we even had a representative from Papua, New Guinea. Part of the success in getting the word around the world was due to posted electronic advertisement in na-net, the Numerical Analysis Network and electronic Newsletter, and also by the various web pages, including ours that was ably managed by Professor Stanly Steinberg, courtesy of the Mathematics Department of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.

Remarkably, most of the congress business and all the processing of abstracts, and proceeding papers was done electronically, showing that the whole academic world is eectively wired. The conference will maintain its website for a while and the program, abstracts and full papers will be on-line at:

This special issue compiles some of the papers that were contributed to the written refereed proceedings of this conference, and its central theme is the applied and numerical mathematics aspects of partial dierential equations. The issue is divided into four parts: adaptive meshes, computational uid mechanics, linear partial dierential equations, and nonlinear partial dierential equations.

Each part contains several papers with dierent contributors, with some concentration in compu-tational uid mechanics, a theme that had many representatives in the combined meetings.

It is my belief that this workshop marks the arrival to maturity of the Latin American community in these disciplines. It showed that the uneven one way relationship of the past, in which most of the ow of more up-to-date and sophisticated contributions came from abroad, has become now a dialogue in more equal terms. This means that future meetings should further this maturity by nurturing joint eorts between scientists of dierent countries, transference of technology, and in general helping in the accelerating modernization eorts of Latin America.

We would like to thank the organizing and program committees for their contributions to the success of the meeting, and also to the organizers of minisymposiums that helped in the editorial work of these proceedings, and most specially to: Carlos de Moura, Marco Raupp, Benito Chen, Stanly Steinberg, Sergio Zarantonello, Miguel Cerrolaza, Liliane Barichello and many others who contributed time and eort to make this meeting possible.

Also a special thanks to Professor R. Coifman of Yale University, for participating in the event and giving some of the most inspiring talks on Wavelets and their applications. Thanks also to Sergio Zarantonello for his special introductory course on wavelets.

We could not nish without thanking the many sponsors that made this event possible:
