ABSTRACT

The growth of traditional medicine in Indonesia is increasing rapidly. Development of these industries should be supported by scientific evidence and needs to be improved through research, exploration and examination of the material to make a new medicine. The usage of herbal medicine is currently on the rise. One of them is Bishop’s weed (Trachyspermum copticum) as a laxative drug. To know the effect of the usage of those plant, a research should be done.

It was an experimental research that used 40 mice (Mus musculus) with an average weight 25 – 30 g and 2 months old as the subject. These mice was divided into 4 groups which were : negative control group that was given 1 ml aquadest orally, a treatment group that was given 1 ml infusion ofBishop’s weed 40% orally and two positive control group that were given 1 ml of castor oil (Oleum ricini) and dulcolax. Then, the weight of feces was measured and the characteristic of feces was observed every thirty minutes during three hours.

The average feces weight data was tested by student t-test and the feces consistency of the mice tested by Mann-Whitney U test. The data and calculation were then presented in a table form. The result of the infusion of Bishop’s weed (Trachyspermum copticum) of 40% has a significant properties as a laxative. The treatment group that was given infusion of Bishop’s weed 40% has much better laxative effect than dulcolax and lesser laxative effect compared to castor oil (Oleum ricini).

The conclusion, Bishop’s weed (Trachyspermum copticum) has a significant laxative effect. Infusion of Bishop’s weed (Trachyspermum copticum) with its optimal 40% concentration proved to have a laxative effect. It is proven that Bishop’s weed has much better laxative effect than dulcolax and lesser laxative effect compared to castor oil (Oleum ricini).
