4.1.2 The Reasons Why Personal Deixis as Dominant Type in Donald

Trump’s Campaign Speech

.

In this study, there are 5 types of deixis found in the Donald Trump‟s

campaign speech. They are personal deixis, temporal deixis, spatial deixis,

discourse deixis and social deixis.

Table 4.1 : The Percentage of Types of Deixis

The table above in the campaign speech of Donald Trump shows the

deixis which consist of 255 (54%) for personal deixis, 42 (9%) for temporal

deixis, 116 (12%) for spatial deixis, 55 (24%) for discourse deixis and 4 (1%) for

social deixis. So, it can be concluded that the most dominant type of deixis is

personal deixis in Donald Trump‟s campaign speech.

In the campaign speech of Donald Trump on August 15

during he delivers his campaign speech. “We” as part of subject in English and

refers to the Donald Trump as the speaker, the audience, and the American people

who watch, listen or attend the campaign speech.

Based on the analysis, in the campaign speech use the plural pronoun

“We” refers to Donald Trump as the speaker and the presidential candidate of

America, the audience or participants and the American people who watch, listen

or attend the campaign sp

eeches. Here, the topic in this speech is about “How to

Make America Safe Again”, Donald Trump wants to convincing American people

that they are under threathing due attack from ISIS. He try to convincing

American people that Moslem people are actor behind ISIS attacks which has

occured either in America or other country. He wants to engage American people

to be aware of Moslem in the world with told ISIS attacks have occured thus

clause many victims such womens and childrens. He conviences American people

that he is able to make America be a peaceful city if he will elected be a next

president in America.

4.1.3

Use of The Deixis Appropriately in Donald Trump’s Campaign

Speech.

The use of deixis in Donald Trump‟s campaign speech is appropriate

(57)

president to come. There is context of situ

ation in Donald Trump‟s campaign

speech because the situation appropriate with the current theme. Then,

background knowledge divided into two, they are cultural general knowledge and

interpersonal knowledge. Cultural general knowledge in campaign speech is

“Thank You”. In their culture “Thank You” is a common expression of gratitude.

Donald Trump use “Thank You” to appreciate the listeners who came to hear his

speech. The data of this study are the utterances from the script of campaign

speech. So, interper

sonal knowledge was not found in Donald Trump‟s campaign

speech, because there is no interaction between Donald Trump with listeners and

only Donald Trump share the cause of terrors incident that had happened and all

about the past his rival by unknown listeners. And the co-textual in campaign

speech is “We”, because between speaker and listeners knew what topics talked

about and the use of “We” refers

to the Donald Trump as the speaker, the

audience, and the American people who watch, listen or attend the campaign

speech.

4.2

Findings

From the data analysis above, the following are the findings:

1.

There are 5

types of deixis that used in the Donald Trump‟s campaign

speech:

They are 255 deictic words as personal, 42 deictic words as temporal,

116 deictic words as spatial, 55 deictic words as discourse and 4 deictic

words as social.

(58)

important role. It can be used to represent the speaker‟s identity through

the way the speaker refers to himself, his opponent, and his audience.

3.

Based on the analysis, there are same deixis but have different

references.

Like use personal deixis

Our

in “Let me take this opportunity to

extend our thanks and our gratitude to the police and law enforcement officers in

this country”. T

he first it refers to the

thanks but second “Our” refers to

the gratitude. While, in discours

e deixis “That”, like

“In November of

2015, terrorists went on a shooting rampage in Paris that slaughtered 130

people.”

In the utterance there is “That” but use “That”

here, not as

discourse deixis because “That”

has relative pronoun.

It is different with

this utterance “That is why one of my first acts as President will be to

establish a Commission on Radical Islam” the use of “That” here as

discourse deixis because “That” refers to the reason of Donald Trump

why he makes decision to establish a Commission on Radical Islam. So

that, context is very important because without context the audience or

listeners difficult to understand the meaning of the speaker say clearly. If

the audience or listeners knows the context, the language can be

understanding clearly about what the meaning.

4.

The use of deixis in Donald Trump‟s campaign speech depends on the

context divided into three. First, context of situation there are in Donald

(59)

knowledge. Cultural general knowledge in campaign speech is “Thank

You”. “Thank You” is a common expression of gratitude. The data of this

study are the utterances from the script of campaign speech. So,

interpersonal knowledge was not found in Donald Trump‟s campaign

speech because, there is no interaction between Donald Trump with

listeners and only Donald Trump share the cause of terrors incident that

had happened and all about the past his rival by unknown listeners and

the co-

textual in campaign speech is “We”,

because between speaker and

listeners knew what topics talk about and

the use of “We” refers

to the

Donald Trump as the speaker, the audience, and the American people

who watch, listen or attend the campaign speech.

4.3

Discussions

Speech is the example of spoken communication done directly by a single

person in front of the audience. It is usually done by a leader of a country,

company, community or anyone who can inspire the audience. To avoid

miscommunication between the speaker and the audience, deixis is important to

learn in order to know how the purpose of utterance. Deixis is the way in which

languages encode-feature of the context and thus concerns ways in which the

interpretation of utterances depends on the analysis of the context of utterance.

Additionally, deixis is defined an expression that is bound by its context. For

example it is in the context of utterance. The expression are only known from the

context of utterance in which it is called as deixis. There are some very common

words in our language that can‟t be interpreted at all if we do not know the

(60)

uttered. Out of the context, the purpose of the sentence is really hard to catch. It

contains a large number of expression (you, she, he, we, tomorrow, here, there

and today). Expressions mentioned technically known as deictic expressions from

the Greek word Deixis which means “to show, point out” via language.

Deixis is a word that has a reference that can be identified through the

speaker, time, and place that is spoken in the utterance. So, the word or sentence

has meaning of deixis if one of that word or sentence is changed due to the change

of context. The meaning of word or sentence that is adapted to the context means

that meaning of the word or sentence change when the context changes.

Based on some definition of deixis above, it can be concluded that deixis

is a word that has

a referent or reference change depends on the speaker‟s when

express that utterance and influenced by the context and the situation that occurs

when utterance take place. In other words, an utterance can be interpreted by the

reference with give attention to the situation of talking. By learning deixis like

personal, temporal, spatial, discourse and social deixis it can help the readers or

listeners to understand what the speaker means in the utterance. As the findings

present deixis that found in Donald Trump‟s campaign speech there are 5 types of

(61)

represent the speaker‟s identity through the way the speaker refers to himself, his

opponent, and his audience.

Donald Trump is more popular as a success businessman which already

has dozens or even hundreds of companies around the world and never involved

in politics at all. However, Donald Trump seems to realize that the public is tired

of politicians, people who prioritize political correctness. Donald Trump is not

concerned with how the public will judge him. In delivering his speech, Donald

Trump successfully attracted public attention easily only through his powerful

speech. Absolutely, it gives an advantage for Donald Trump. Listeners would

prefer a simpler and easier to understand language. Donald Trump does not use

much complicated diction as many other smart politicians do, but he always

delivers his point repeatedly to the public so that a few listeners pay attention to

him.

Donald Trump also managed to use the press to raise of his popularity. In

his campaign speech, he was not afraid to speak bluntly and unsparingly when

discussing something. Like a campaign speech about "How to make America Safe

Again" which became the source of data in this study. He was not afraid to say

that Islam is radical and needs to be pressed in order to stop ISIS. That way,

Donald Trump succeeded in grabbing the publicity, though most judged it as

negative. Based on the calculations, Donald Trump managed to get the most votes

306 electoral college while Hillary Clinton gets 232 electoral college.

(62)

meaning. Yule (1996) stated that context is the physical environment in which a

word is used. Related to context, Cruse (2006) context is an essential factor in the

interpretation of utterances and expression. There are context of situation is a

physical condition that comes along with the occurances of an interaction when

the conversation took place, context of background is divided into two, they are

cultural general knowledge is a knowledge of everything that exist in life

generally that are understood and stored in the minds of people in society and

interpersonal knowledge is knowledge gained from the personal interaction earlier

or social interaction before between speaker and listener. And last context of

co-textual is the context existed at the text itself.

In this study, there are the context of situation i

n Donald Trump‟s

campaign speech because the situation appropriate with the current theme. In

cultural general knowledge in campaign speech is “Thank You”. In interpersonal

knowledge, because the data of this study are the utterances from the script of

campaign speech and the co-

textual in campaign speech speech is “We”.

From the analysis above, Levinson (1983) and Yule (1996) show that

deixis has important role to deliver the meaning of the speech. It means that deixis

is involved in dynamic relationship between speaker and the audience or listener.

(63)

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

5.1

Conclusions

Based on the findings and discussions, the conclusions can be drawn as the

followings :

1.

In Donald Tr

ump‟s campaign speech are

found 5 types of deixis. They

are 255 deictic words as personal, 42 deictic words as temporal, 116

deictic words as spatial, 55 deictic words as discourse and 4 deictic words

as social.

2.

Based on 5 types found in the

Donald Trump‟s campaign speech

, it can

be concluded the most dominant type of deixis is personal deixis,

because Donald Trump as speaker and presidential candidate of America

always use “We” when

he delivers his campaign speech. “We” as part of

subject in English and refers to the Donald Trump as the speaker, the

audience, and the American people who watch, listen or attend the

campaign speech.

3.

In speech, context is important for the speaker and the listener to

understand the speaker‟s meaning. Use of deixis in Donald Trump‟s

campaign speech depends on the context of situation, context of

background and context of co-textual. The context of situation in Donald

Trump‟s campaign speech matches because, the situation appropriate

with the current theme. Background knowledge is divided into two. The

first, cu

ltural general knowledge in campaign speech is “Thank You”. In

(64)

there is no interaction between the speaker with the audience, since the

data of

this study is the utterances from the script of Donald Trump‟s

campaign speech. The co-

textual in campaign speech is “We”. The use

of “We” refers

to the Donald Trump as the speaker, the audience, and

the American people who watch, listen or attend the campaign speech.

5.2

Suggestions

In relation to the conclusion, the suggestions are staged in the following:

1.

A speaker should know that his/her speech can cause miscommunication

between the speaker and the listeners. The use of deixis in speech shows

the relationship between deixis and context that can lead the listeners to

understand what the speaker talks about in the speech.

2.

A research is advised to explore the capability and creativity in an effort

to

conduct the use of deixis especially in speech to give some

information that the correct use of deixis is a way to understand the

meaning based on the context.
